The poll will most likely take place next week, as this will give more people a chance to have become active here in the new place.

Patience!  :)

Are stars part of a reward system?  As forum members do we expect to receive more stars if we post more often or is it based on the value of information which we post?

As an example, I can sit on my computer for an entire day saying, "My thoughts are with you Mr./Ms. Forum member and have a thousand posts within a few hours

OR

I can review documents and write a thought provoking thread on an issue of importance to many people living with HIV/AIDS.  If this is the case, isn't my 1 star a form of stigma, which delegates me as a lesser member of the forums than a member who spends his/her day saying, "my thoughts are with you?"  Have the best day
Michael

How about eliminating the stars, and newbie names etc, and put their "join" date in that spot?  Is that possible?

Well if this is all based on the amount of posts a person makes I can see where the place fills up with junk real quick.
"Newbie" indeed....... Back in 2002 maybe.

I agree.  You know, we could add our original join date so that it shows up under the avatar.  This is one reason I don't like the change; it sort of loses the history of AidsMeds users.   For example, Ray (J.R.E.) has a joined date of Dec 2003 on the old system and of May 2006 on the new one (I chose him only because he mentioned the dates and he's been a member for a few years).  It means something to me when I see a post from a long-time member.  I just added this to my profile as a test and it works fine.  Of course, most people don't bother to put anything in their profiles anyway!

"newbie" - idiotic and disrespectful.

"New member" - smarter and respectful.

The idea of awarding stars for length of time as a member or number of posts is silly. What was the thinking behind this idea? How is it supposed to be helpful? Are we supposed to accord people with three stars more respect or deference than someone with one star? Is it like a one-star general vs. a four-star general? I find this entire idea irritating. Aside from being just plain silly, the classifications of Newbie, Jr. Member, etc. are demeaning

Another thing -- when I'm viewing a topic, how is it helpful to know who else is viewing that same topic? Why would anyone need to know this information? I find it intrusive.

Are the member designations and stars built into the software?  I am a member of another board and it has the exact same designations and star system.

The software makes you have at least 1 star, unless you divvy up the code by removing two lines from the display template... But editing the descriptions is easy to do through the moderation screens.

Dear Forum Friends,

As I suspected, we are on Hollywood Blvd.  I just hit post # 50 to advise our Zephyr on the smog program in our state and I was automatically upgraded to "Jr. Member" and was "honored" (said in a bitchy tone) with a second star.
