The forums look different, there is no forum roster out to the left just stats, and Quendalon is online. Is there a problem? New software?

The new edition makes my avatar kinda squashed on the sidebar but not in posts

squished avie to the left :o and now everything starts much, much further down the page. I haven't decided yet if the awesomely cuter emoticons ;D :o ;) make up for having to scroll further down to reach actual content - but the color scheme is nice.

Are you going to be able to add words to spellcheck yet?

Yep, we've upgraded the Forums from SMF 1.1 to SMF 2.0. Functionality, on the user side of things, shouldn't change all that much, though we did reintroduce the ability of members to "ignore" other members (you can do this by clicking on the person's profile and either adding him/her to your ignore list (or buddy list, as they case may be). Other than that, the upgrade provides a lot of functionality on the back end of things, including reCAPTCHA registration requirements to help us weed out spam bots (we've been dealing with between 200 to 300 spam registrations on a daily basis).

The new edition makes my avatar kinda squashed on the sidebar but not in posts

Yep, I see that too. Will see what I can do about that.

w00t! I might just use that some now  ;)

I do like the way quotes look. (although in the reply function right now, all the left sidebar has disappeared.)

Not so much a technical problem as a colorblind problem.  Is there a way to change the color hues?  I can barely differentiate the colors and everything seems to bleed and blend together?

The Welcome message appears on every single page, and I can't get rid of it.  And how do you go from one subject thread to another, since they aren't listed anymore in the left-hand column (e.g., from "Living with..." to "Off Topic")?

To close the Welcome message at the top of the Forums, simply click on the box in the subhead bar to collapse the window:

I'll get the Forums index back into the left frame.

Any chance on changing the red color of the forum titles?  Red is just too suggestive for this type of forum, IMHO.  Even black would look better.

Wow!  Things look different! I have a 32 inch monitor and still have to scroll and look around to kind of get familiar with the new layout and color scheme. I'll try out the functions as I go.

Look for a << symbol in the upper right-hand corner of the index if your index is appearing across the top of the page. Click on the << symbol and the page will reload, putting the index back on the side.

Click on the << symbol
I don't have that symbol :'( and only have "user", "stats" and "search" in the left column (which is totally gone during posting a reply)

on forum listing on the left, no << symbol
(https://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad21/leathermanmikie/am_photos/forum01.jpg)

no left column during posting

I don't like the red colour for the forums headings. Little icky.

Also, I haven't figured out how to move straight from one forum to the other. If I wanna go straight from "Off Topic" to "Living With" for example??

Use the "Jump to" drop-down box at the bottom of the page, in the lower right-hand corner.

Use the "Jump to" drop-down box at the bottom of the page, in the lower right-hand corner.

That's not very useful -- it's extremely cumbersome to scroll WAYYYYYYYYYYYY down every time you need a certain function. What moron SMF web designer would place that down there?

If Timothy H. has the abilities to move that box somewhere up top it would be great.

I've coded a Forums Index for the left panel and it will appear on all pages in the Forums. Note that I've made the Forums Index and Stats blocks collapsible - just click on the "-" or "+" signs in the header box for each to open or close them.

Are you going to be able to add words to spellcheck yet?

Second that as in same question.

Function wise, this may be better, but design wise, I liked the previous version better. Or may be I will forget the first one soon and get used to with this one.

Question on the ignore option, that would only work for PM or on the thread also? Just a question

Since (who wonders if he will be talking to himself soon)

I've noticed that now when creating a new PM the "To" field isnt auto-populated with names as you type. I now have to type in the full name (and remember exactly how that name is spelled).

Not a huge issue mind you, but if its an easy fix it would be nice to have that back again.

great job so far Tim and co. !

I'm using firefox 6.0
I'd just finished adding a photo to my profile and then I clicked on the "Show Own Posts" link on the profile edit page.

I was then taken to the following page:

http://forums.poz.com/index.php?action=profile;u=71147;area=showposts

The page was blank except for the following message:

Incorrect key file for table './adms_forums/smf_sessions.MYI'; try to repair it

GROWLER

Addit: Just clicked on the page link and this time it worked perfectly, went straight to my own posts.

Are you going to be able to add words to spellcheck yet?

We've had problems with PHP spell checkers in the past. Are going to try one out on another community forum before rolling it out here. Will hopefully have a functional spell checker available here early next week.

Question on the ignore option, that would only work for PM or on the thread also? Just a question

Good question, actually. If anyone has gone ahead and put others on their "ignore" lists, could you let me know -- privately -- if you're still seeing Forums postings from those individuals?

I've noticed that now when creating a new PM the "To" field isnt auto-populated with names as you type. I now have to type in the full name (and remember exactly how that name is spelled).

I'll look into systematic autofills, but your own computer's cache should do a good job of recalling names you frequently type into the "to" field when sending a PM.

Tim

P.S. I realize it's never easy getting used to SMF upgrades and I appreciate everyone's patience and feedback. If anyone notices anything particular useful about the upgrade, from a user's standpoint, please note tips and tricks as well. And I will say that from a admin/mod standpoint, the upgrade is already proving to be a blessing. Instead of waking up to 150-plus account approvals to weed through, this morning we had a grand total of six account reviews pending.

Post by: Bad Girl on December 15, 2011, 09:28:04 am
Hi everyone, this is Bad Girl, Ann's bitchy alter-ego. She only brings me out when there's new software to play with, so I haven't been seen in these forums since around 2006 when we first switched from FuseTalk to SMF.

Remember what Ann said about there being >> or << symbols? Well, we do all see them, but we plebs only see them in our profile pages. (and that stupid bitch was wrong about anyone seeing them in the general forum pages - duh!) You'll find them next to our profile info, which may be showing to you as a middle column, or it may be showing as a bar at the top.

If you see a bar, clicking on << will change it to a column. If you see a column, clicking on >> will change it to a bar. Personally, I prefer a column; your mileage may vary.

I checked out the ignore function. I had to go into my profile and under "modify profile", I clicked on "buddies/ignore list". Once I was on that page, I clicked on the ignore tab. Then I added that smarmy git newt and came back to this thread.

I could still see that newt had posted, and I could also choose to see his post. I admit it, I was weak and peeked at his post, even though I ignored him. What am I like? Sheesh!

Now heads up, everyone. If you put someone on your ignore list, not only will their posts be blanked out (with the option to view), but they will also not be able to send you PMs.

HOWEVER - and this is where it may get confusing....

If you only want to ignore PMs, you can go into your profile under "modify profile" and click on "look and layout". On that page, in the list of changes you can make you'll see "Hide messages posted by members on my ignore list". If you un-check that box you'll see their posts, but not their PMs.

You can take a member off your ignore list by going into your profile, going to your ignore page, and clicking on the red X that appears next to their name.

Another thing that is different now is that EVERYONE'S email address is hidden.

Let me repeat that - EVERYONE'S email address is now HIDDEN.

If you want members to be able to email you anyway, go into your profile, click "modify profile", click "account settings" and check the box that says "Allow users to email me". If you do this, the member who emails you will not be able to see your email address. You then have the choice of whether or not to email them back, using your account and allowing them to see your address.

This is what it says in the SMF help pages: Allow users to email me - A member may choose to allow other members to contact them via email. The forum does not reveal the member's e-mail address, but instead provides a contact form.

If there's any other questions members may think I can help with, please ask in this thread. It can be handy being a moderator's alter ego! :D

In badassness,
Bad Girl

Bad Girl, as you and others can now see, you're under a warning for calling me a stupid bitch. You didn't really think you'd get away with it, did you?

Folks, this is a new function that we mods are currently creaming ourselves over. We're still figuring out exactly how it works, and we won't be using it here until we are sure how it works. The fine folks over in Am I Infected will be our first guinea pigs. When we know exactly what we're dealing with on a practical basis, we'll make all the necessary changes to the Welcome Thread and let people know.

As Tim says, we appreciate everyone's patience and feedback.

At the bottom of each page is a drop down menu that allows you to click It, select the topic (such as Living with HIV) and then it jumps to that category.

If you are using an Iphone (which is usually how I view the forums), the drop down menu only lists the topic you are currently viewing, all the other choices are missing.

Greg, I understand you have issues with your eyes. (I'm astounded at the fortitude with which you have dealt with that - particularly when it was really bad. Respect!)

However, the background colours are identical to the ones in the previous software. Alternating posts are a very light blue/grey and a very slightly darker blue/grey. Perhaps I'm missing something - could you be a bit more specific? Did you have a similar problem with the old software?

Please understand that I'm not being dismissive. I'm sure you're not the only person with visual difficulties and we want to ensure these forums are as accessible as possible for all.

I've seen that myself and I've seen that with a PC, a laptop and a netbook, even with the previous software. However if you give it a couple seconds, the rest of the forums do appear. Maybe you're not giving it enough time? Try it out and let us know.

BTW, I've never accessed the forums through a phone. Do you not see the left-hand column? The index is now appearing there again - Tim fixed it yesterday.

Thanks Ann.  The old layout worked perfectly for me.  I have a difficult time with the blue words on blue backgrounds.  After just a few moments of reading, everything becomes hazy, I think due to straining to read.  I've tried adjusting my hues, but it affects every other site I visit.  It's like I have to change it just for AM.

I'll play around with it and see if I can resolve it here.  I have everything zoomed at 400% and maybe that's skewing everything.

Modified:  Somehow I ended up with a pink background with black text and I can see it all really well now.  I'll stop messing with the colors and live with pink for this site.  It sure is ugly, but very functional.

I tried it again on my Iphone.  It still only lists the page you are currently viewing.  The other pages do not appear (and I waited awhile).

The index on the left appears fine, just the jump to scroll at the bottom.  The jump to scroll is the method I had grown accustomed to using because on such a small phone it was easier to use, often times if I used the links on the left I would end up clicking the wrong thing (because of the small screen).

>>>>speaking of which...I have accidentally clicked "report to moderator" about a dozen times..its cause I'm usually using my phone and end up clicking it by mistake (small screen).  I'm really not "reporting" that many times  ;D

I had an issue at first also because the colors in this theme are somewhat different from what was used in the previous version. I had to adjust the contrast on my monitor to make all the subtle differences standout a bit more. this theme is gray on gray with gradient blue headers (with the difference in post backgrounds almost negligible), while the last one was slate blue and gray

I can't open my pms.  I click on the subject line and it says it's taking me to message # whatever, but nothing happens.

I sent Ann a pm asking if something has changed, she responded that she's flumoxed.  The pms are coming through to my e mail account, but because I can't open a specific pm I can't respond to it without sending a whole new message.

Creating Captions For Profile Pic

When I changed my pic and tried to add a new caption to go under my profile pic, the box to do that was squished.  All I could see were the tops of the letters I was writing.  So, I just had to wing it and hope it came out right.  It didn't.  I misspelled a word.

Anyone else having this issue?  Or, just my stupid, antique laptop again?  Not the biggest tech issue, I know.

if you're running IE, clicking on the compatability button (the icon that looks like a ripped in half page, that is to the right at the end of the address/url box, before the refresh and stop buttons) often fixes oddish problems with this website - especially if you get the "jumping textbox" problem

Hi

This is kind of a technical problem.  Last couple of days you have been running an ad for Kaletra that is sort of a popup that doesn't go away unless you click on the little x on the corner.

I mainly view the forums on my IPad or IPhone and that pop up is nearly impossible to click away.  When you move the screen to get near the x the ad in turn moves farther away from you.

It's vexing

Thanks for listening.

It used to be that when that ad appeared you would make one x-click and it would go away at least for several days, or maybe a week before re-appearing. About an hour ago it appeared for me and then it would re-appear with every damn page reload. At least until I sent someone else here a PM asking if they were seeing the same thing over and over, and then suddenly after sending the PM the ad went away.

We'll see how this plays out. Maybe it was just a glitch, though in the past when odd behavior suddenly appears the database becomes fucked up the next day and the entire forum disappears for "maintenance" :)

Same here. I don't mind the adds, and even click on them every so often to help with ad revenue, but this one is annoying.  The moving around causes me to accidentally log out  ::)

Can you please get rid of the pop-over ads in the newly diagnosed sections? It's not very therapeutic to go there and get greeted by a drug ad rather than useful information.

I'm happy that I found an ad block extension for Chrome to do away with the site's ads altogether. I wouldn't have gone that route if the ads weren't so obnoxiously intrusive all over the site. Is drug company money really the only way to keep this site going?

And why on Earth is the Search box hidden at the bottom of the page on the left? Could you please put it near the top of the page like it is on every other web site?

I'm new to all this and find this web site both frightening (the news on the front page is overly sensational) and confusing (it's really not easy to find the forums). Please think a little more about new users in the future. I'm sure the bells & whistles are great, but the basics are pretty awful.

I'll look into the pop-up problem -- I don't believe the ad should be appearing every time you visit the forums or open a new page in the forums.

Probably not really tech issue but........
As bad as the pop up is on my PC, it is 100x worse on my new iPad.  Not only can I now see the add (it is just a blank box on my PC),  it is extremely difficult to close it on the iPad without accidentally opening it.  When I enlarge the screen, to better touch the "X" it moves to the edge of screen where I can NOT even see the "X" any longer.

Not to mention the waste of my time and the frustration...... The only ads that I have seen are worthless to me, as I am already on a regimen that is effective for me.

This is definitely a tech problem -- I'm very sorry about the pop-up/iPad incompatibility and will try to work it out this week. I was hoping the problem was limited to the Kaletra pop-up campaign, which ended on the 15th.

Okay, we've made some progress with the ad troubles:

1) Pop-ups. As these involve open-source coding, we were able to enlarge the "x"s that need to be clicked to close the ads. This should make things easier -- but not necessarily perfect -- for iPad/iPhone and other smart phone/tablet users. Please let me know if this is not the case.

2) I realize there's been some sluggishness with respect to page loading times, which is related to our banner ads. We've taken a few steps to improve this. Here too, if anyone's experiencing significant problems, please let me know.

Thanks for your patience,

Tim

The "X" is much easier to hit now -- thank you.  Although I still do have issues with it moving to the edge of my screen where I can't see the "X" - and it only happens when I've zoomed in to read (i.e. when my reading glasses ain't handy).  Doesn't happen all the time -- but it is on both my iPad and iPhone.

Thanks,
Mike

Just some feedback on the search tool.

No matter what you search, no matter how common the word, or how many subforums you search in, the results always only return 1 page of results.

There is no 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ... etc

Is this intentional?

Are you serious? I've had searches return fifteen or more pages. If what you're searching for only has one page, that's because you're either not using the right trigger words, or there just hasn't been the interest in the subject you're searching for.

Perhaps it's a permissions thing?

I tried searching "disclosure" and got one page, and all of the results were from 2006-2007.  Simply impossible and appalling as this has been a mot du jour for some characters in the past few years.   This is truly criminal.

Um, my apologies. The last time I used Search was a week or two ago and it was working just fine then. I didn't have time to check it out more thoroughly last night (it was waaaaayyyy past my bed-time) but when I checked it out a little while ago, I had the same problem. I searched for oral and should have had a shit-load of pages, but got only one.

Hi Tim,

Two things -- not sure if they've been covered and no, I didn't search for an answer first.

Since the site change, when I hit "Notify" to stay in touch with a thread I'm interested in, I don't get notices.

And every time I log on, without fail, an empty ad box appears which must be deleted each time because of where it lands and the amount of site real estate it blocks.

Anything I can do, or you can do, to alter these items?

Thank you.

Em:

I haven't experienced any notification problems -- for example, I received an e-mail notification about your message posted in this thread.

Have you checked your spam folder? Also make sure forums@aidsmeds.com is white listed by your e-mail provider and e-mail client.

This is the first I've heard of "blank" pop-up ads -- can you please send me a screenshot the next time it appears (timh at aidsmeds.com), along with information regarding the operating system and browser you're using?

Thanks.

Tim, I've had some blank pop up ads in the past several days as well. I'll take a screen capture next time, though I'm not sure what use that would be.

I'm on OS X 10.6.8 using Chrome as a browser.

though I'm not sure what use that would be.

If the dimensions are the same as the paid ad currently in rotation, I'll know that's where the problem is. If the dimensions are different, the problem may be something else entirely.

Thanks much.

Hi.

I hope I'm doing this correctly.

I posted a question today in the "Am I infected?" forum ("Brief encounter - unprotected anal insertive"), and I notice that there's a square smiley face icon to the left of my post that is not there of my choosing.  What is that, what does it mean, and how do I (or should I) get rid of it?

Thank you very much.

Hi Tim

I've been experiencing really (REALLY) slow response times for the last 3 - 4 days.

Trying to send a pm takes unusually long.  Trying to scroll down a thread either locks up my puter for several minutes (before the screen goes blank and then reappears) or it just sits there saying "Waiting for about: Blank"

I'm not experiencing any problems on other sites, like my home page, CNN, MSNBC, etc.

I've deleted cookies three times in 3 days.  And defraged my hard drive, even though it said I didn't need to.

Any suggestions?

when it popped up again, probably for the 6th time today, I used my chrome browser "inspect element" function to look for this "religion-faith.com". That url crops up with Mecch's avatar ("http://religion-faith.com/images/stories/guru-gobind-singh.jpg). However, I'm not certain if Mecch has always had a post on each of these pages when I received the warning; but this is definitely something to keep an eye out for.

perhaps Mecch should grab that pix and store it elsewhere no it's not being accessed from that "bad" url. ;) (i'll pm him about this)

edited to add:
oddly when I went to PM Mecch I saw his avatar three times and none of those pgs triggered the religion-faith.com warning. ::) ::)

this is not a technical problem, just a vent. now that the "am i and estoy" is pay for play, is there any way at all that things could be changed so that positive users of the site can filter that board out. when i click "show unread", i don't wanna see countless idiotic threads. this came to a head for me when i recently noticed one poster has been posting for two years. i know i can physically go into the board, mark it read, then back out. i'm asking for a solution that i never have to see their crap.

i have a paper cut on my pinky finger. i shook hands with someone. are they infected? are you sure? should they be tested at 6 months? couldn't i be the first and most unique person to ever pass hiv in this way? are you sure. i'm gonna ask this question from every possible angle i can possibly think of. thank you so much for wasting your time.

edited to add, after we shook hands, the other person scratched their rear end vigorously. couldn't that have increased the risk? i'm so worried.

That happened to me a few times yesterday, but it hasn't been anything happening consistently. I assumed it may have had something to do with the internet in general with all of the Sandyness in the Northeast. It's a little known fact that more than 50% of worldwide internet traffic goes through one place in northern Virginia (http://www.hirestrategy.com/job_market/feature_content.aspx?article_id=1153).

I've put it down to Sandy as well. I was surprised the site was accessible at all, considering the BBC has been reporting that over 8 million residences and businesses from the East coast right into the midwest do not have power. Better late slow than never!

If things don't improve within the next day or so, I'll try to find out if something else is wrong. Otherwise, it's likely to be that bitch's Sandy's fault.

It has taken me almost 5 minutes to:

1.  Get the web site to load
2.  Log in
3.  Get the off topic forum to open
4.  Get the Technical problems thread to open just so I could post this.

This has been happening intermittently for several days now.  I see that the culprit is probably Sandy, but darn it's frustrating.

Title: Re: POZ Forums Technical Problems: Report Them Here

Mike, I think this is most likely an issue with your computer, not the website. There are no error messages associated with your IP address and usually when it's a problem with the site, there will be error messages recorded (even when you don't see the messages yourself).

We have had a problem recently that made the site super-slow, but that has been taken care of and doesn't seem to have recurred.

Do you have access to another computer to see if the same thing happens to you on it? That would be one quick way to find out if it is indeed your computer and not the site. Let me know if you can conduct this experiment and what the outcome is.

I'm no techie when it comes to things like this, but if you discover it happens to you on computers other than the one you usually use, I can direct the problem to the appropriate site geek techie.

I really don't think this is the fault of the site, but I am prepared to stand corrected.

edited to add...

And by the way, it just occurred to me...

Are you sure you are logged in "forever"? There are several options as to how long you stay logged in for and the shortest time period is one hour.

Maybe you just haven't noticed that you're logged in for the shortest amount of time. This is the first thing you should check, and apologies if you've already sussed this out as the possible culprit.

Thanks Ann,

I am logged in "forever".

The main reason I did not think it was my computer was that this isn't happening to any other site that I remain logged into -- and because it was happening mid-session, not when I come to the site.
I don't have the issue on my iPad -- so it well could be my computer.  It is so sporadic that I can't seem to put a finger on anything that makes sense.

ah well -- if I'm the only one, then clearly the issue resides in my neck of the woods.  I know my anti-virus software is up to date, so I'll take a wait and see approach right now.  No problems thus far today.

thanks for the response

I was thinking of suggesting the same thing; it couldn't hurt to try. It may be easier to delete all your cookies (no Wumpers, they're not the kind of cookies you eat) rather than hunt down all the ones associated with this site.

I've deleted cookies (multiple times) and defragged, neither of which seems to help.

When I try to enter a forum or thread it just sits there for several minutes and says waiting for poz.com.

I'm not experiencing this with any other web site (MSN, CNN, my local paper, etc.).

Any suggestions anyone?

this ^
or have you tried something like Hijackthis (http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/) to see if you have some sort of malware interferring?

have you tried logging in from anywhere else? Kinda like your Ipad login, I would think you'd be okay on another PC, which would mean the problem IS something going wrong with your PC. It'll just be a matter now of using the right software to figure out what the problem is.

Are we supposed to be able to edit our own posts?  I found some embarrassing grammar mistakes in a thread I replied to last week that I would like to correct.   I hovered my mouse all over my message and don't see the usual edit link or icon anywhere on my own post.   If yes, where did I miss it?   If No, bummer.

You now only have 30 minutes to edit a post. This is due to abuse of the edit button.

Look at it this way - if you haven't corrected grammar or spelling mistakes by then, loads of people have already seen it, so why sweat it? Also, if you want to go back and add some additional information, it's best to create a new post because people who read the original post usually won't see the new information. If you've posted something (such as a personal detail) that you later regret, get in touch with me via PM and I'll sort it out.

is it just me, or are the Forums running unusually slow? It takes like 20 seconds after I hit reply to get to the screen to type in...which is a long time for an old man like me cause I forget what I was going to type.

We have implemented some more security features on the server. It should stop most of the unwanted traffic and make the forums faster in general. Please let us know if any user activity got affected by these changes.

Are the forums having some difficulty loading pagae?  I noticed this around wednesday. This morning is really bad.

I've tried using 3 different browsers, IE, Firefox and Chrome , ( on different computers, in different locatons)

And it's taking an extremely long time to log-in, and for any page to load

It not a constant thing, but it's getting to be more frequent.

Today the site is very slow.

We seem to be having server problems. It's not just us, it's also the HepMag forums.

To try and fix it, yesterday our tech guy Andrej made some changes to the security settings - that's what was causing the "forbidden" error messages. He then undid the security changes and the server problems seem to be getting worse.

I know, it's frustrating. Hopefully it will be fixed ASAP.

In the meantime, feel free to post any problems here. It will help us understand the extent of the problem and may give us clues as to how to fix it.

I have to admit - this level of computer tinkering is beyond me. :(

Yesterday and today (about 5 minutes ago) I got to the POZ site OK but had to make several (about eight) attempts to get to the forums.
Not sure if this helps.

edited to add... when I typed the "numeral eight" above^ it first appears as the emoticon with the sunglasses on. weird.

TEST: 8 -numeral 8
TEST:  8) -  emoticon
TEST: 8) - numeral 8 with ) added afterward

(I think this is a separate issue)

The magazine site (poz.com) and the forums are on different servers. All of S&S's forums (from the various magazines in the tabs at the top of any forum page) are experiencing this problem.

this is not a separate issue. It's how emoticons work  ;)

in the olden days (LOL) all we could do was type text on the web. Emoticons were born by combining a right or left parentheses or an "O" as the mouth on a face. Semi-colons, colons, the number 8, the letter B, etc were typed before the "mouth" to represent eyes. an 8 or B and a right parentheses typed together then represent sunglasses and a smile.

Because it's not the olden days anymore, when you type emoticon characters together, the software automagically changes it into a picture/image for that emoticon. Think of it like predictive text. ;)

: ( typed side-by-side (without the space between the characters) is translated to :(
8 ) typed side-by-side (without the space between the characters) is translated to 8)
: - * typed side-by-side (without the space between the characters) is translated to :-*
(sometimes a dash "-" is added to the "face" of the emoticon representing the "nose")

you'll find you accidentally create emoticons sometimes when you don't mean to.  :o To correct the issue, just type in an extra space. For example to not have "8 )" be 8) ; type "8", then a space, then the ")"

keep an eye out in the reply text box when you're writing a post and adding in an emoticon. You will see the characters that are typed together to create each emoticon. ;) (FYI that winky emoticon is a semi-colon followed by a rt parentheses) Keep an eye out in the preview of your reply for accidental emoticons and just add a space between the characters to keep the software from creating the unwanted emoticon.

Where are you trying to post them from? I posted a photo yesterday with no problem. Sometimes if you're trying to post a photo from a website, they don't allow it because it "steals" bandwidth. You may be getting a forbidden message because of that.

Or are you trying to post titillating photos of you in your jammies? :D

HA! You posted a photo!

Tee hee.
I just tried an experiment. If I place ONE pic (from photobucket) in a post and hit preview, the pic appears and seems to be going along fine but when I try to add a SECOND pic to the same post and hit preview I get the "forbidden" notice. (then hitting the back button only to find my entire post has vanished)
I have posted multiple pics in this same manner many times without an issue but it's no longer allowing me to do this.
Try it yourself.
I'm not sure if this is a sporadic problem or not. The last time I tried was about a 2 weeks ago and I had the same problem.

Title: Re: POZ Forums Technical Problems: Report Them Here
Post by: jkinatl2 on July 19, 2013, 10:02:13 pm
the 403 error seems to engage whenever I attempt to post a URL. It happens when I post a URL in the quick reply, the extended reply, and trying to modify a message to insert the link.

This also happens when I try to send links via private message. It's really thwarting my ability to help out, and will absolutely impact my ability to moderate AM I if it's not addressed.

however, in a thread that has vanished about Washington state ASOs and ADAP, I simply typed in two URLs and the site automatically coded them up for me like this:

http://schacctf.org
http://catawbacare.org

however after several attempts, I find that you are totally correct in that coding any combination of two photos/urls craps out in the error

The thread that vanished, vanished because soliciting for funds is not permitted here.

And yes, posting links directly will always turn them into live links. Don't know what's up with not being able to post more than one instance of code (for links or photos) though. It's a misery mystery.

If you click an emoticon after spell check or during a preview without an active cursor on the page it will do that , so before adding an emoticon make sure your cursor is active and doing the blinky thing and it wont happen .

do you have an antivirus program?
try AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html)

do you use a anti-malware program?
try SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)

do you have a registry cleaner?
try ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download)

Personally, I put these three programs on every computer I work on, use or own. The antivirus is free, and the other two free programs, I update and run every month.

if you still have issues, perhaps HijackThis (http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html) can help you find anything else weird running in your system

I know you probably don't use a Mac, but while we are on the subject I finally invested in Disk Warrior which is a pricey utility they use at the Genius Bar at Apple stores to perform disc repair and rebuild directories: http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/

For example, when you have a lot of large video files on a disc and move them around, delete some, add more, etc. the directory can become jumbled and cause the operating system and other software to underperform, and even freeze partially or completely.

I learned years ago to not pull my hair over anything posted on this forum. ~looks over at Am I and sighs~ I've had enough problems with hair loss over the years as it is - being a baldy might suit Miss PrissyPoulèt, but it wouldn't suit me.

I do, however, often have the imprint of a keyboard on my forehead.

I don't know what to suggest, Mitch. Nobody else seems to be having this problem, and it's weird that it's continued with your new computer. Maybe it's the mutating effect of the radon (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=50227.msg602982#msg602982) in your basement? We know Kenny had it down there next to your prissy charming laundry baskets the other day.

I guess that radon is the culprit. Those prissy laundry baskets used to be butch. Radon seems to work in mysterious ways. 8)

OK,  problem seems to have resolved.  No more warnings by my antivirus.

Ray

I wish someone could tell "Chrome" to back off.  I just started to get warnings from Chrome, about AM and malware, yet when I check the details, it shows no issues for the site in the past 90 days.

Color me puzzled.

Joe

edited to add:  The Chrome warning I first see, blocking the site, tells me that this site is a know distributor of malware and I should be careful.  When I click on advanced, it shows the forum as HAVING NO ISSUES regarding malware and confirms the site has been checked regularly within the past 90 days.

OK, who broke what?

I knew it, it is the Ghost in the Machine attaining self awareness... somehow, I thought we would have more time.

edited to add:

I get the following msgs from Chrome about the site.

It points to issues in pozforum.com/themes/default/css and scripts sub-directories.  It references webkit.ss in the /css directory as well as other script.js?fin20 files, throughout the /default directory and it's subdirectories.

Each time I try to log in, I get more warnings and details.  I'm using Chrome and I just updated it today.

Every time in the last few hours I click on this site, I'm getting a warning that it is a "reported attack site."  Anyone know why?  I don't want to click on anything in case it is a virus or something.

The malware has been removed. Now we're just waiting for Google to do some checks before they'll remove the warning. It can take some time for them to do this, even though the problem has been resolved. Sorry.

Was the server down?  I've not been able to display the forums since yesterday evening.

Something was down. My theory is that the hamster fell out of his wheel again - and I'm sticking to it.

If you could compare my computer expertise to car mechanicing, I could gap and change the spark plugs, change the oil, top up the brake fluid, change the tires and do a few other simple maintenance type things, but I couldn't fix a transmission or swap out an engine. Oh - I can drive the car too. (yay me!) I can also work a ten-ton winch on a fishing boat in a gale of wind, and do all the necessary navigational deeds in the wheelhouse too. But I couldn't strip the winch down or fix the steering chains in the wheelhouse.

So yeah, it was that darn hamster falling out of his wheel again. ;D

I don't know why you're getting this error message - none of the IP addresses associated with your account appear in our ban list. One is close, but that should not have triggered the ban for you.

Try deleting your cookies - that may work.

Still having a LOT of problems with Kaspersky antivius, blocking and showing that a trojan program on this site, is trying to download. ( see last two posts)

It's non-stop audible and visual warnings, no matter where you click on the forums.

I cannot change my profile pic.  I go to photobucket to copy the link, just like I always have.  I paste it and hit update.  However, the image won't apply, saying it has been deleted.  As you can see, it is a message from photobucket that says deleted, where my profile pic is.  I have tried several pics.  It will allow me to use my former profile pic again.

When I try to post these new pics within a thread, it works just fine.  Anyone have any idea what may be the issue?  Weird they will post within a thread, but not for profile pic.

Thanks.

Well, I didn't fully post them.  I hit preview and they were there.  Then, I just deleted my post.  I am on the photobucket site, clicking on the pic (pix) I want to use.  I am copying the direct link and then pasting that into the profile pic field, in the change profile section here.  The pics are at photobucket and assigned links.  Weird it works in threads but not for profile.

I will fully post here the exact same pic I want to use for my profile, just to show it works in threads.  I put this exact link in the profile pic field and I get the "user deleted photo."

Uploaded to another account and no problem.  So weird.  There is obviously some issue with the other account, to let me post pics in threads but not as profile.  I cannot imagine any setting that would prevent that.  Anyway, thanks for the ideas on what it could be.

Perhaps this is the fault of my IPad, but whenever I begin a post and open a new window to get info or a link to use in my post, I often return to my post to find all my text gone.

Curious whether others experience this and on various devices?  It doesn't happen every time, but I would say 50% of the time.  Could just be some issue with safari on IPad, but doesn't happen with emails or other websites.

When I go to poz.com it takes me to a sign in page where my sign in info doesn't work.  I haven't been forwarded to that sign in page in the past.

I was able to get around it by going to aidsmed.com.  I checked my sign in info and I was entering the correct info before.

Is this happening to anyone else?  I guess if it was, we might not know it because if you can't get past the sign in page then you can't post either.

where are you logging in for what? there is no forum log in from the poz.com (http://poz.com) page, although there is a poz personals log in. http://forums.poz.com (http://forums.poz.com) is the url for the forum log in.

https://www.poz.com/
the link is actually without the http"s"
http://poz.com (http://poz.com)

I have the "s" :-)

https://www.poz.com/  returns as an invalid url
http://poz.com              loads right up

regardless though, there isn't a forum login at http://poz.com
but at http://forums.poz.com (also w/o an "s")

We are in the middle of launching a new POZ.com. You may see some intermittent issues until it is fully migrated later today. The new URL will be secure (https://www.poz.com). The Forums are not changing in anyway.

I think it looks great , and is much more user friendly and easier to navigate.

Indeed it also seems far more touch screen/mobile device friendlier, hence feels up-to-date. The device friendlier part is great for me :-).  it also means more people can use and view the poz site and that's really good news. Better site for all us users and tools for everyone who needs/wants to find information.

Does that mean we are no longer allowed to use punctuation or paragraphs?  ;)

Punctuation, hmm let me put it this way, it's not one of my major worries in life.  :)

Well after a few days of instability it seems like the forums are back up and running. Happy days  :)

I know Ian put a lot of effort and time in over the weekend and holidays to fix the problems and so a big Thank you to Ian, and also to Peter on the tech team.

If anyone does have any problems please, please do let us know.

This morning I am finding that the "Welcome" block of information expands every time I move on the site.  Over the years I have experienced days where it would appear on first opening the site, but after I minimized it, it would stay that way for days/weeks at a time.  Not today --- it's a bit annoying!!

Some additional information -- it is happening on both Safari, Chrome and Edge browsers.  As well as happening on my phone and desktop.

Hi Mike.

Thanks for the update, I just got round to emailing Ian with the details and included this info.
I tested myself and had the same result, personally I would suspect its a cookie issue, cookie not being stores or the setting at least not in the cookie but that just my thoughts and I am no tech

I am new to this forum and struggling to write my first post. There is no category in my account like 'write/submit a post'. Any tips highly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi I wasn't sure where to post this and it seems I can't DM an admin. I use my iphone to browse this forum and it has helped me a lot to coup with being infected with HIV and I went on just now and it says "Guest" has been banned? I don't have a lot of time to go on my actual computer and it kind of upsets me that I can't browse the forum on cell, ask questions, or anything. Maybe I had viewed the forum to many time not logged in and it banned me.? I don't know if anyone can help me or point me to someone who can.

I'm using my computer to post this BTW

Hiya,

"Guest, you have been banned" would only be part of the message normally spoken.

I'll send you a PM that you can reply to so we can get some details and check, most likely it's the automated filter used to protect forums & websites that has some of your details flagged.

Best, Jim

I've removed your "blank" posts.  Are those the ones you wanted removed in the "Memorial" forum?

Hi,..

You only have a certain amount of minutes to modify a post.  After that time, the modify button will not be there anymore, and you will not be able to modify a post.

I am not sure of the time limit for modification. It might be 10 minutes or 15 minutes. Jim can tell you the time limit.

Or possibly you don't have enough post yet.

Now I, just modified this post, to add the above sentence.

I modified this again,( two times) to let you know the modify button , is just to the right of the quote button.

Correct the max time limit to edit is 30 mins, however, once someone has replied to the post the edit function is also disabled if I am not mistaken.

And the reply button ?

I am guessing that you mean the reply button to your "Do I have HIV" thread?
The reason you can't post is you have used up your three free posts.
