A Million persons with HIV march on Washington
« on: February 24, 2008, 08:28:25 pm »
We have seen Million man marches on Washington for other reasons in the past, perhaps we need a Million persons with HIV march to demand services not be cut, but improved, and for better access to health care for all...And if those marching for affordable housing, more income for those on disablilty and other meager incomes and other issues, all the more the better.

Working full time and not having great computer access, my AOL no longer works on this junky p.c., it would be tough for me to give much time for this but I am willing to help get the ball rolling and to be there when it takes place.  Anyone interested in this idea?  Lisa mentioned it last year and there was some response.

I would certainly go to something like this if there was an inexpensive bus to D.C. from Boston - it would really depend on all the logistics, and clarity as to what we want congress to do for us.

Hmm, I do remember Lisa mentioning something about this last year. I think this would be a brilliant idea..I think it would show those yahoos on Capital Hill that we do mean business and I also think that it would be long overdue.

A few years ago, hubby and I signed up to do a bike ride to raise money for and awareness of HIV.  The last leg of the ride was through the "mall" in DC.  We ended up not being able to go due to Mini's health at the time.  Anyway, does this event still happen?  If so, maybe showing up at the DC "mall" to show support for the riders and the event would be a good way to begin.

Just a thought.

Indeed she did - she spent a lot of time and effort on getting the forum on the ball as far as the idea.  I will try to link the threads in a moment, but my wireless has been crashing everytime I try to open a long thread lately)

Anyway from my own discussion with her, the biggest problem she faced was that she was informed of it requiring setting up a 501c or something and she honestly had too much on her plate to oversee such a thing herself.

If the requirement of a 501c was a barrier, perhaps finding an ASO who runs their books well would consider having this project affilliated with them, but not organized/executed by them. Maybe there's one in or near DC that would be interested.

I'm not sure it was that a 501c needed to be affiliated with it or created for it.  I'm also not certain that I am relaying correctly what the direct issue was as an obstacle.  I'll send Lisa an email and see if she can weigh in on this.

I don't know if we can go the ASO affiliation route per se as this seems to be more of requiring the resources of a national org.

I am a "DC Native" and live in Maryland.  I remember reading about Lisa's plans last year and wanted to help.  I can talk to someone at my local Health Dept as well, she chairs my support group.  She may have some good ideas.

The weather is going to turn hot here really soon, something to keep in mind.  Its going to be 64 today as we are having a mild few days, but they are calling for flurries tomorrow morning.  Just keep the weather for the time of year in mind.

July, August and September are unforgiveable around here!

Would the march be for neggies who support us as well?  The more, the merrier!

i agree 100% that this should and could and will be done
however
as with most marches the numbers can be lower than hoped and then it seems weak
and
i truly believe, and i may be wrong that unless we can really get a huge huge march that is stunning in size
we may seem to small to be issue
and
i don't know anything about politics or activism but i feel that a sustained calls and faxes and emails to elected officials at every level might have a more powerful wave like effect over time
than a one day march but i completely support a one day march too

the question is in recession what influences policy and most of all mean horrible republicans that love to give billions  to blackwater and halliburton texas republican employees so they can buy more suvs
but these republicans do not want to help anyone
poor, racial or gay
or sick

they call themselves Christians but act exactly the opposite
so how to influence them
they control 49% of house and senate!!! or 51% depending on day

I'd be surprised if anywhere near a million positive people showed up.

Well, yeah -- there's only slightly over 1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the US according to CDC statistics.

You can see the number here by state:
http://www.statehealthfacts.org/comparemaptable.jsp?ind=513&cat=11

Imagine, if we could do a straight line across from the west coast to east coast OR we all came out of the closet and wore special t-shirts on a certain day and all the proceeds would go to people that need help with meds or something. OK, I'll wake up again...damn atripla :)
