Atripla first dosage last night, are TMJ symptoms common?
« on: August 29, 2011, 10:38:48 am »
I have been prescribed Atripla for 30 days as a PEP and weighed my options before starting this treatment.  As the 72 hour window was closing fast I decided to begin the regime.

Last night, an hour or so after the first treatment  I developed what I best could describe as TMJ symptoms.  I have a burning sensation behind my eye, jaw pain and dull ache behind the left ear.  This is all accompanied by a "tingling" sensation mainly around my cheeks and lips.  Are these normal or somewhat common side effects of beginning the treatment?

I am aware of the trouble sleeping aspect but I have not read a lot in regards to the TMJ like symptoms.

Thank you in advance for the responses.
Hoping to learn from past patterns, not keep cycling through them.

Alright after reading other posts of this forum I am wondering if in fact these symptoms I am having are stress related.  I have been very anxious about beginning this regime.

Dude don't take this the wrong way but your stressed about taking this med for 30 days? Stressed would be an HIV diagonis and having take these pills forever. So if I were you I would kiss that pill and thank god every night that you may have halted this thing in it's tracks.  You have potentially been given a second chance. Be thankful.
I sure would take your deal over mine right now.

I hope that it does not come across that I believe my issue is on the same level as others in this forum.  My concerns are of the medication itself. I am looking for advice in regards to having headaches that are almost debilitating after taking this medication, the sleepless nights where I toss for five hours before passing out.
In this matter I believe everyone can relate.

Am I thankful that I only have to take this for 30 days and probably given a second chance? You are darn right I am! We are all on this forum for decisions either we have made or that have been forced upon us; so in this I feel that I have the right to have my questions/concerns answered as well.

Take the medicine for 30 days and be done with this. The meds affect everyone differently.

I have not herd of Atripla causing TMJ like symptoms. I would assume that it is all stress related, not from the medication. I have TMJ and it is not fun. try to avoid chewy food, and relax your jaw as much as you can.

Myavatara, why are you taking PEP in the first place? All too often PEP is prescribed unnecessarily. You may be taking powerful meds that you don't even need.

Ann,
I was prescribed this due to having unprotected sex with an anonymous person as the insertive partner.  Although I did ask his status I met him in an unsavory place where sex is rampant.  Part of me couldnt not be 100% sure since he was letting me bb him.  Although the risks are less as the insertive partner I think the stress of the situation and my own anxieties won out, hence the prescription.  If I did not take the PEP and three months down the line I test positive I would look back and regret not taking the drugs.

I had tingling when I first went on HAART.
Just relax and accept what effects it is having.  If you are committed to taking the PEP, its just the price you have to pay.

Myavatara, you need to wise up and start using condoms with everyone, regardless of what they tell you about their hiv status. Some people lie, and some people only think they accurately know their hiv status.

You are highly unlikely to end up hiv positive after a single unprotected insertive encounter, with or without PEP. Now that you've decided to take PEP, you're just going to have to suck up the side-effects and get on with it. You could have avoided all this by using a condom. You seem to be trying to put the blame on the other person - "since he was letting me bb him" - but the responsibility to protect your own health is yours and yours alone.

You need to know that taking PEP prolongs your testing window period by one month. For a conclusive result, you need to test at three months past your last dose of PEP.

I'm moving this thread to the Am I Infected forum, which is the more appropriate place for it.

If this is a better forum for my question then I thank you for moving it.

I know I am the one to blame for the situation and the stress is more guilt I believe because I put myself in this position numerous times when I was younger.  I did not think I could fall back into this pattern and the decision was not sensible.

Thank you for the information on the window period for testing.  I was not aware of this.

Myavatara,

You also need to realise that as the insertive partner, you put yourself at far greater risk of being infected with one of the more easily transmitted infections such as syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia, all of which are on the rise in most communities. You need to be checked out for all STIs - not just hiv.

These infections do not always cause obvious symptoms, so the only way you're going to know is through getting a full sexual health check-up. You can test for most of the other STIs at around two weeks following the incident, but syphilis shares a three month testing window with hiv. PEP will not affect the syphilis testing window, so you can test for that at three months after the incident.
