Diarrhea from taking LOPINAVIR/RITONAVIR (KALETRA) + LAMIVUDINA
« on: September 24, 2012, 04:16:56 pm »
I am taking three pills in the morning and three at night.
I have tried to take them on an empty or full stomach and even in the middle of food intake but have not noticed any improvements with my diarrhea problem.

Imodium only helps SOMETIMES...
This is quite frustrating!!

Any suggestions to make this diarrhea problem better?

My doctor told me to take Imodium as long as the problem persists.
So i have done, but there are times when diarrhea does not stop or lessen..

You didn't get my point. Do you take 1 mg, 2mg, 4mg etc. and are you taking it with your dose of Kaletra (i.e. before diarrhea starts) or after? Be specific.

I started to take them every morning (2mg) with my dose of HIV meds.
It did help at first, but after a week it just helped somedays, so I stopped and told my doctor.

The doctor told me to start an omeprazole treatment for 14 days.
I finished the 14 days and started another 14 day treatment.

Currently at 7th day, taking a 20mg pill every morning when I wake up (fasting) 20 minutes before breakfast at least.
This also helped in the begining but does not do anything right now.

Any recomendations?

When I was on Kaletra I took up to 8 mg of imodium with each dose, so a total of 16mg/day. Is there a reason either you or your doctor didn't go with increasing the dose instead of moving on to something else which isn't working?

Additionally, should I assume that your doctor screened you with a stool sample to rule out other things causing diarrhea?

Yes, the doc took a stool sample!
There were no other reasons to the diarrhea.

I have my Doc appointment in a month, will take up the subject again.

Did the 16mg dosage a day help you out at all? or so so??
What meds are you on now?  Why the change from Kaletra?

THX  ;)

Kaletra was approved in the US at the end of 2000, and I would have gone it around that time. I was on it until mid-2006 so five years, and yes taking imodium at that high dose was a necessity for me and yes it helped. I doubt you will need as high of a dose as I did, so I would recommend increasing it by increments of 2mg until you find which dose will work.

As far as why I am no longer on Kaletra I don't really feel like typing out several paragraphs to explain it. It's not relevant to the discussion of diarrhea anyway.

Have you found the Lessons section of this website yet? You may find the individual Lessons on The Big Treatment Questions and Sick to Your Stomach (Nausea & Diarrhea) particularly helpful.

You can also read about all the individual drugs (and combo pills like Kaletra) in the Treatments pages.

Hope that helps.

hey buddy
Hang on in there
I am on this combination since 2 years already and am doing fine. THE MUST RULE is to eat before taking the pills and you won't have any problem
so try to have a complete full breakfast (eggs, cheese, oats, bacon, some dried fruits) and a nice dinner and all this problems will be gone. It helps a lot if you have fats and proteins in the meals. Also a protein shake might help.

I had diarrhea the 1st month and occasionally when I don't have a proper meal, but all the rest is good.
There's too much confusion.
