This is unbelievable. Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) wants to rename the the current AIDS relief bill after Jesse Helms.

SA 5074. Mrs. DOLE submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by her to the bill S. 2731, to authorize appropriations for fiscal years 2009 through 2013 to provide assistance to foreign countries to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and for other purposes; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows: On page 1, line 5, strike "and Henry J. Hyde" and insert ", Henry J. Hyde, and Jesse Helms".

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1987 described AIDS prevention literature as "so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1988 vigorously opposed the Kennedy-Hatch AIDS research bill, saying, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 1995 said (in opposition to refunding the Ryan White Act) that the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their "deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct."

Jesse Helms, the man who in 2002 announced that he'd changed his mind about AIDS funding for Africa, but not for American gays, because homosexuality "is the primary cause of the doubling and redoubling of AIDS cases in the United States."

Many people hold Ronald Reagan responsible for adding to the early AIDS death toll by his inaction on the pandemic, but it was Helms' actions in thwarting early research that inarguably hastened the demise of many thousands of Americans. How many of my friends, of your friends, would be alive today if the life-saving medications had arrived just one fucking year earlier?

I ran into Lizzie Dole once in Cary, NC when she first ran for the senate.  The woman's hair simply DOES NOT MOVE.  It was a really windy day and we were at some well-known local ice cream place but it has no indoor seating, and she stood there with some supporters and you could see that she must use an entire can of hairspray each day.  It was like a helmut.

What's worse is that this was in 2002, and that hairstyle was already dated 15 years (at least outside of the South).

Shadoos, while the gesture of contacting Sen Dole is good, you should realize that gay, straight, drug users, etc who are HIV+ all have a virus.  Separating the "good" ones from the gay and drug users is inappropriate and only adds to the stigma of HIV.

You know, I have read the entire thread again and it harkens back to the days of ACT UP way back in the fashionable (lol) 90's when Joan Collins and Linda Evans were mired in muck in the lily pond ("YOU BITCH!!!")...all this anger was channeled into action. I protested way back when even though I was neg. (till 2001) because all my friends were dying or dead...and I was angry as hell. Granted, I may have not brought my enire passion to "the cause' because I was Affected and not INfected at the time, but I did what I knew I could.

I believe it's time to channel all this anger from talk to action. Any ideas? Something along the lines of a condom over Helms house (*titter*) but directed at Hole....I mean Dole...is not only called for, but I believe, it's a neccessity. She KNOWS what the fuck she's doing for whatever her sick, twisted reason is and she needs to know we will not let this one fly by without consequenses.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm tired after a long weekend - all that comes to mind is to flood her email with bullshit that will have her own staffers wanting to walk out on her but that's just too lame...I'm open to peaceful civil-disobiedience suggestion type things.

OK...so it's a new day and I posted last night (see above) and I'm still a bit foggy today (four hours sleep makes me draggy ass) --- anyone been thinking about and civil disobedience or actions we can take to let Hole (damn...sorry...mean Dole) get the point???

Really anxious to keep this idea alive and short on brain cells today so if anyone has some good suggestions (i.e. somehow getting to her estate in NC and putting posters all over her front lawn saying "I love gay people with AIDS" or "Jesse Helms really WAS a bigot!" (OK, I'm still draggy ass!)...I'm open for ideas!
