Protest for more research dollars or NAtional aids strategy or Funding

this is what is needed huge funding increases from congress
all states univ. boards of regents

i do not get why we should spend activist energy on the travel ban

please do not attack this post but

the meat of the issue is research and finding better cures better meds, drugs etc

that DO NOT HAVE SIDE EFFECTS

travel ban is a ridiculously minor thing when millions world wide are dying

has anyone heard of teleconference

it is a lost cause anyway till bush is out

oh right just when the biggest security system know to mankind

homeland security   has been set up

the gays want to sashay up and protest for more people with hiv and aids to come into the usa

come on is there no leaders who can prioritize the issues here

maybe activists should protest cause there is not vacations to hawaii for everyone

i dont know

i mean obvously i see the issue

but it is so so so small complared to 40 million people who are dying and only hope is

more science research more money 4 science research

Dear Bimazek

I know that you are a reader, or at least I assume so because of the voluminous texts you've shared in med-related posts.

There is a well-written 20-pp piece at this link http://www.csis.org/media/csis/pubs/movingbeyondinadmissibility.pdf
and I would like to suggest that you read it. It might help you to reshape your prioritization of meds over freedom of movement on the earth as an HIV positive person.

We, as a country, have a rather sizable obstacle to clear and for a variety of reasons. We have many of the most prestigious, productive pharmaceutical companies in the world here and yet we do not host international medical conferences on HIV here precisely because of the travel ban. That fact, as one factor to consider, should I hope sway you to think slightly differently about expansive, collaborative drug development.

Frankly, I can't imagine what it's like to be a top researcher and not be able to attend a conference in my own country. The irony for me is that much of what is funded is via the government which should then, in turn, be the most knowledgeable body regarding HIV transmission and the ramifications of the travel ban. Again, I refer you to the document link above. It opened my eyes to ramifications I'd never considered.

With so many new drugs out recently and en route, development of meds is not the key issue. It's my opinion that it is the human issues that are most important. Reduction of stigma through any mechanism possible, prevention education that works, early testing, any testing, access to meds and fortifying evaporating funding streams to ensure care and compassion for those most in need WORLDWIDE.

Em

You know Bim I rarely read your posts in research because frankly I think they are written by a person with serious personal issues concerning their HIV infection.

However, when you start a thread like this you only continue to help spread the stigma and eventually the virus. Your attitude about HIV is what causes gay men to feel so bad about themselves that they write lies like this in their dating profiles.

I am HIV negative and play safe only. I like to travel.

I think it is time someone tell you that you need professional help in dealing with HIV. Help that you will never find in obsessive compulsive posting in research.

Bim,

First it may surprise you to hear that I don't think the Travel Ban is the most important issue facing people with HIV today.  I won't be baited into your misrepresentation of what the ban project is or your use of  inflammatory language while asking people to not attack your post, but I do think you need to be corrected on a few mis-perceptions of activism in general.

I don't understand the rationale to post a thread dismissing an initiative that people are working for in that arena in order to raise consciousness in another.  You do realize that people can do more than one activity?  Take a look at Emeraldize - she has been truly spearheading MANY  issues of importance and working on all of them.

I also question your prioritizing of what is "the" important issue for activists to work on.  Two weeks ago I volunteered at an event that reached out towards young people of color in my city and tried to educate them on HIV as well as get them tested.  Would my time and the money that went into that event be better spent on just working on making sure there is enough meds available for them AFTER they found out they were poz vs. trying to reach them before.

If you want to make a change, then please let me know how I can help.  But that offer of help comes with a request that you actually outline a clear plan of action, and that it doesn't attack other projects or come at the expense of anyone being able to participate in those other projects.

Why do people post threads like this and then refuse to come back and defend their position?  It's such the Post-&-Run technique, and is close to spam frankly.
