Paula Deen Just Released Video Apology--FAIL
« on: June 21, 2013, 03:35:25 pm »
This is such a strange video with the editing.  She appears to be very sleep deprived or on medication.  She should have done the Today Show this morning, instead of canceling on them.  I would fire her manager.  Or, just fire herself.

I really liked her.  She seemed very gay friendly, so I was shocked to hear this.  Although, I have heard many gay people say awful things about minorities.  So, liking one group doesnt mean you don't hate another.  I'm reading allegations black employees had to use separate entrances and bathrooms.  She's admitted to using the N-word with hateful intent.

I've yet to hear her say she said it in a hateful way.  I've heard her say they are hurtful words though and she admits she's said them.  I'd be more surprised if an older white person from the South said they never did.  I don't agree with the use of the word, but that's from either white or black.  I hate hearing black males calling each other that and I have many friends that do, but I also have many friends that don't use that word towards each other.

I've witnessed people working together telling racist jokes and it involved both parties the joke is  about.  When I managed a bakery down in Miami years ago these situations would make me cringe.  Because later, sure enough, out of those same people who were laughing together someone would use that situation to say the other is racist when they didn't get along any longer due to, simply put, personality conflicts.

Not saying this  is the case with Paula D., but I do grow tired of this lynch mob media going on in America lately.  Matt Lauer has no room to complain about anyone doing someone else wrong.

Paula should make a video telling Matt Lauer to go fuck himself. Now that would be funny.

I also want to point out that when I initially looked at this a while back the chief complaintant in the case, Lisa Jackson, is white.   I wonder how much of this might be a case of the disgruntled employee.

I saw the video and it was very.......sad.

I'm not a Paula Deen fan.  She has always seemed fake with all her y'all's that she seems to add to every sentence.  However, this video of hers to me was very genuine.  She really seem apologetic.

Apology accepted.

Now Paula, stop cooking with all that butter! Your hurting yourself and others with your cooking, now stop it.

She's a real peach all right.  From the NYT article:

June 21, 2013

Food Network Drops Paula Deen

By JULIA MOSKIN

Paula Deen, the self-proclaimed queen of Southern cooking and a sugary mainstay of the Food Network, was dropped by the network on Friday, after a bewildering day in which she failed to show up for an interview on the “Today” show and then in two online videos begged her family and audience to forgive her for using racist language.

A network spokeswoman said it would not renew Ms. Deen’s contract when it expired at the end of June. Ms. Deen has faced a volley of criticism this week over her remarks in a deposition for a discrimination lawsuit by a former employee. In the document, she admitted she had used racial epithets, tolerated racist jokes and condoned pornography in the workplace.

The Food Network statement did not elaborate on its reasons for dropping her, but a person close to the network said its shows featuring her sons, Jamie and Bobby, would not be affected. Ms. Deen currently has three regular programs on the network, including “Paula’s Best Dishes.”

Those shows were part of a small culinary business empire run by Ms. Deen, 66, who has produced numerous cookbooks, lent her name to household products from butter to mattresses, and served as a spokeswoman for Philadelphia Cream Cheese and Smithfield Foods. She and her sons own and operate a restaurant in Savannah, Ga. Her magazine “Cooking with Paula Deen,” has a circulation of nearly 1 million, her Web site says.

In her first video on Friday, posted on YouTube and later removed, Ms. Deen, near tears, said: “I want to apologize to everybody for the wrong that I’ve done. I want to learn and grow from this. Inappropriate and hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable.”

In a longer video posted later in the afternoon, she appeared more composed. “Your color of your skin, your religion, your sexual preference does not matter,” she said. She added: “I was wrong, yes, I’ve worked hard, and I have made mistakes, but that is no excuse and I offer my sincere apology to those that I have hurt, and I hope that you forgive me because this comes from the deepest part of my heart.”

In yet a third video on YouTube, posted Friday afternoon, Ms. Deen apologized to Matt Lauer, the host of “Today,” for skipping a scheduled exclusive interview earlier in the day. She had agreed to the interview, extensively promoted by NBC News, to address the uproar generated by her deposition.

Clearly irritated by the absence of Ms. Deen, a regular guest on the show, Mr. Lauer told viewers that she had spoken with him on Thursday, agreed to an “open and candid” discussion and had flown to New York City. But in the morning, he said, she had her representatives cancel, citing exhaustion. “We just found out she’s a no-show,” he wrote on Twitter. “Hoping to get more info on the Paula Deen situation soon. Very confusing.”

After she apologized online to Mr. Lauer, a “Today” spokeswoman said the program was working to reschedule the interview.

Ms. Deen has managed to offend even her most uncritical fans before, most recently in January 2012 when she announced she had Type 2 diabetes on the same day she endorsed the diabetes drug Victoza and a lucrative collaboration with Novo Nordisk, the drug’s manufacturer. Because she had built her career on a no-holds-barred approach to sugar and fat (creating recipes like a cheeseburger patty sandwiched between two doughnuts and a Better than Sex cake made with cake mix, pudding mix, and heavy cream), she was roundly criticized for encouraging an unhealthy diet for others, hiding her illness and then trying to profit from it.

On Thursday, criticism of her racial remarks mounted on Twitter — even spawning a sarcastic hashtag, #paulasbestdishes — and on Ms. Deen’s own Facebook page.

The lawsuit against her was filed in March 2012 by Lisa T. Jackson, the general manager of Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House, a restaurant that Ms. Deen owned with her brother, Earl (Bubba) Hiers. Ms. Jackson, who is white, said that her father was Sicilian, with dark skin, and that she had suffered prejudice as a result.

In the deposition, Ms. Deen said that she had used a racial slur in the past, though not in the restaurant, but that she and her family did not tolerate prejudice. “Bubba and I, neither one of us, care what the color of your skin is” or what gender a person is, she said. “It’s what’s in your heart and in your head that matters to us.”

She also stated that “most jokes” are about Jews, gay people, black people and “rednecks.”

“I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person,” she said.

Too bad she doesn't have the integrity to be offended herself.

Joe

I agree.
I think even her own family history that she trundles out about her great-ganddaddy killing himself when he lost his "workers" (yeah workers, she won't say slaves for some reason) on his plantation, is a LOAD OF CRAP, sheer delusion.....
She's probably white trash inventing her life and her regions history out of sheer stupidity and delusion.....

The more I've heard the story, the more I'm confused.  She says she only used the n-word once, in regards to be held up at gunpoint when she worked at a bank 20-30 years ago.  She has denied using it in regards to the plantation wedding.  Under oath, she said she had used the word in the past.  But, I still don't know the context.  So, I'm not sure what's true and what's false.  I heard allegations black employees had to use separate entrances and bathrooms, but nothing more on that.  That would seem easy to prove.  Where are the black employees coming forward to say that was true?

If I was asked under oath whether I ever used the word, I would have to say yes.  Without context, people would think it was in a racist, awful way.  I have never called someone the word.  I have had debates about the word--often times with black friends.  We didn't sanitize the word, when discussing the use of the word.  I've had and still have many close black friends from childhood.  We would joke, poking fun at the gay and black stereotypes.  I've been thinking how some could take what we did and turn it into me being racist and they being homophobic.  It could be difficult to explain.  I'm sure many would say it was wrong to joke, even among friends.

So, is there any proof Paula used the word, besides her own admission she used the word about the bank robber some 20-30 years ago?  I've read the plaintiff in the suit has admitted Paula never displayed any racist behavior.  So, I'm confused on this.  But, the plaintiff is the one who said the thing about the wedding and that employees at her restaurant said racist things.  What's the truth?  If the remark 20-30 years ago is the only proof she used the word, then I think it is wrong to ruin her.  I think we've all said things that we regret, especially years ago.  Many of us grow and become better people.

I thought I had this story down, but I have become more confused on what is really known.  I guess I need to read more, from news outlets that are more detailed and have more journalistic integrity.  The TV news media has been terrible at reporting it.

I am tired of the whole damned story and wish it would simply go away.  This is a prime example of the 24/7 news industry taking a minor story and turning it into a circus.  At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what the context is/was -- no matter what comes next, Paula Deen is toast as the "brand" she was 2 weeks ago.  I suspect her restaurants in Savannah will survive, but the rest -- is really now gone all in the name of ratings.  Personally, I find Matt Lauer to be a egotistical blowhard.  Demanding Paula stick to her interview when he refuses to talk about his role in the firing of Ann Curry.  I once liked him, now I can't even watch him.

Agreed on all counts

The Today show interview was ghastly for every party involved including me watching it, but luckily I had it on as background and can "justify" watching such crap since I teach media literacy.   Really a nadir of contemporary media and Matt Laer, obviously smarter and better at this, was such a sadist - so mean, so disrespectful.

(PS - doesn't she have any PR handlers??? gawd!)

This is a media witch hunt.

She's kinda gross.

The lawsuit was mostly about her brother and the company's abuse of employees on many counts.  Her "n*gger" quote was a small sideshow in a much more damning, general case of employee abuse. It wasn't her even on trial it was her brother and her company. She's the head of that but nobody was claiming she ran around abusing everyone..

So again, this is a media witch hunt.  Everyone in the cycle licking their lips.

But as she is rather deluded, phoney, gross, hypocritical, put on, theatrical and not so good for public health, (although she has qualities, as well, like most people, a mixed bad) so oh well, I guess she was a lamb to the slaughter....

Hope she hasn't burned through her millions on current lifestyle.  She should be fine at 67 with what she has got.

And again, Martha Stewart pulled out of scandal, so don't count Deen out.

Thanks Wolfie - it's kind of laughable when the Supreme Court are the bigger racists this week.

I bet they don't even know how to use a deepfryer!    Besides..... Crackers gotta eat somewhere......Maybe they need a change of pace from the French Fries and snowcones at the beach at Tybee Island.  Talk about a shake shack!

Many news outlets bleeped the word "cracker," when it was said in the Trayvon trial today.  It did make me think.  Obviously cracker has nothing on the n-word.  Nothing.  Having said that, it is a term used most often in a derogatory way.  Was Trayvon racist, when he allegedly used the word?

I believe that all racial slurs have the same level of vileness in and of themselves. Any word used as an ethnic or other bigoted slur is the same.

There is a difference, however, between the N-word and most of the rest: historically.

There is more violence associated with the N-word than other ethnic slurs and that has to be factored into consideration of the words themselves. I have thought about this and cannot think of any ethnic slur that has the kind of violence behind it as that word does.

Regarding the Trayvon Martin case, I can't speculate whether he held any prejudice towards white people.  According to the witness Trayvon also told her, "this nigga is still following me".   As someone said last night on the news you would have to walk a mile in both parties shoes to really know how each one felt regarding people of different races.  That's impossible...

As I've watched this trial on TV I can't help but think how just a little bit of communication between both parties would have went a long way.   I also can understand why a 17 year old would be a little freaked out that a man was following him.  The witness said she jokingly told him over the phone "the man probably wants to rape you" and Trayvon responded with "girl, don't play with me like that".

Regardless, a 17 year old lost his life for senseless reasons.  Paula's done, stick a fork in her....  I give her two years on the death pool.

Slurs against Jewish people have a MUCH longer history and a very violent history at that. Violence and slurs against Jews go back many, many centuries. Slurs and violence against Muslims too, for that matter. (Crusades, anyone?)

Several people have posted this today on Facebook.  If it is real, it is from an employee at her restaurant, who is black.  He says he has tried to stay quite, but feels the need to speak up.  Well, it is a little late now.  If black employees had good things to say, it would have helped before everything came crashing down.  But, better late than never, I guess.

I saw that on Jay or Jimmy.  Ok, it's funny.  Having said that, the more I read about this, the more it does seem like a media witch-hunt.  She cooks unhealthy meals.  Her personality gets on the nerves of many.  She only came forward about diabetes, once she was being paid by a drug company.
