At least MSNBC is providing live coverage, unlike *cough* CNN.

cnn was live on it but they pulled away after the religious exemption vote (which wasn't the main vote) and after that one gay Senator spoke his two minutes and talked about coming out (which MSNBC totally talked over about other stuff and never alluded to this Senator's message).

Also, it should be noted that unlike Massachusetts there's no residency requirement to marry in New York state.

This is indeed wonderful and heartwarming news.  It is a blessing that dedicated loved ones will have all the equal rights of their neighbors who are straight, such as in regards to wills, hospitalization choices and government and corporate pensions and benefits.  Equal rights and justice for all means just that!!!

But more than that it is cheerful news, so hopeful and terrific. Good for my home state.

Well I guess a line will form to my left and right with guys looking to marry me! ;)

This is great news, especially being a former New Yorker from long ago (Upstate -- Binghamton -- during the Cuomo years, Mario Cuomo, that is).  I'm amazed they managed to get this through the state senate, which has been controlled by some notorious Republicans for a long time for such a heavily Democratic state.

Cheers,

Henry

It was a great night to be out on the street at Stonewall last night. It is a joy to be a part of Queer Rising and to see how their unrelenting efforts made such a difference in the months and days leading up to the vote.

Wish you all could have been on the street last night. It was really something.

Big cheers for all.

Terrific news!  I saw this first thing this morning when I logged onto my computer (I get NY Times updates).
I've never killed anyone, but I frequently get satisfaction reading the obituary notices.-Clarence Darrow

What a historic day. It has been a long way since Stonewall.

Good news... but not really the goal.
Here in iOwa, SS marriage is very low key.
It happened via the courts, so many feel iOwa SSM is not legit.
But realistically, state recognized SSM might give some people that warn cozy feeling,
in reality it contains little legal punch.
Many legal issues were made more confusing. Like taxes.
And if you marry in NY, or say iOwa, and then desire to move to somewhere else like Ohio or Texas or Minnesota, there you are back at square one (not legally married in that state).

I was personally very shocked when Obama said last week he still feels SSM should be a state matter. WHAT?!?!
I'd like to know how he would feel to be acting president legally in 5 states, and not in all the other states.
Or if he and Michelle's marriage were only recognized in 5 states, and not in all the other states.
Some issues may be state level business, but marriage is truly not one of them. Period!
Obama's statement and opinion was so ignorant, that I have to conclude he only made it to grab a few
right wing swing votes come November 2012.

State recognized SS marriage is way too unstable legally speaking.
Your marriage can not be taken across state lines.
It has no federal legality.
A state can public ballot vote and kill active SSM laws at any time, and nullify your marriage rights with a simple ballot majority.

On the plus side...
With the large population of NY, and SSM now the state law, all people might feel more comfortable with SSM
and it might boost the over all acceptance nation wide. .
NY being the business capitol of the US, that might help create more positive business attitudes nationally.
News, tv and movie media might reflect SSM in a more positive light.

This is good, what happened in NY. But until SSM is federal law nation wide I will be far from totally happy.
There is still a very hard long way to go.
What happened last week in NY could easily be null and void by a simple future ballot vote placed before the public.
Or by a future president, and congress, passing a national constitutional amendment.
With the 1960's fight for civil right laws, if this were the outcome back then, blacks would never accept this.
Neither should same sex people today, not until full civil rights and equality is achieved.
And without any fine print "conditions", as was the case in this New York legislation.
Conditions I felt very insulted by as a gay person.

If I were a lawyer with a client, and the was the settlement offer made by the other side, I would have rejected it.
But thats just how I feel about selling out ones principals, for a little perceived gain.

on "FOX Sunday" 6/27, that is exactly what Bachmann stated as her goal. Her convulted statement paid lip service to states rights to determine the matter at that level, while she insisted that she, as president, would push for a constitutional amendment at the federal level defending DOMA and revoking/over-riding the states laws on this matter.

(I'm often surprised, and troubled, by those who so loudly claim that we need to "get back" to the way the constitution says the country should be run (though for the life of me I don't see how we're not following the constitution or what rights have been stripped away LOL); yet who are also activists for wanting to change and add to the constitution. If it truly is a perfect document that we should follow, why does it need to be changed??  ::) )

I'm not insulted that NY made a little concession and said religions don't have to perform same sex marriages.
It's all going in the right direction.  Some of these churches are so polluted they should lose national tax exemption and religious marriages shouldn't have the legal bearing of a civil document.  I guess that will only happen when hell freezes over in the USA.

Forcing a religion to recognize your marriage is a step too far.  It is their choice whether or not to recognize and perform your marriage within their church.  If you tell them what they can and cannot believe you are essentially taking away their freedom of religion.

Those good folks who seek equal rights and justice don't need the prejudiced and hateful amongst the religious groups to give their blessings.  Marriage is a civil bond and the religious ties are a choice, not a mandate.

But already the bitch Bachmann who is running for president and doing well in the Iowa polls has threatened a federal constitutional ammendment to overturn a state's rights to legalize gay marriage.  It's funny (not really) how conservatives always point to allowing states to make their own decisions separate from federal activist mandates.  But when it comes to issues where they disagree with the state, then it is OK to overturn the decisions, or attempt to.  I guess conservatives are never activists, only liberals.  If Al Gore had 400 more votes than Bush in 2000 we all know the conservative biased Supreme Court would have sent it right back to Florida, claiming states rights...Hmmmmmmm.

I hate, no detest conservatives, they totally suck and should all go to Hell !!!  Cruel as that sounds there is no debating with them anymore!!!

Leatherman...Good points how those who claim to support the constitution as much as they do with states rights, blah, blah, blah would be the first to strip states of their choices when it doesn't suit their brand of advocacy, namely bashing and trashing those with liberal views and progressive, open lives.

I posted at work and don't always have a chance to read all posts ahead of me, bad me.  But it is good to see others realize the phony policy of the law in general, especially the Supreme Court.  It's never really about the Constitution, but about backing and enforcing the conservative politics and policies the majority of judges support.

Those living in real estate hell of big cities know one little benefit of marriage - you can get your freaking name on a very old, very cheap lease that your partner is lucky enough to have.    :o
