Title: will everyone get the ARS
Post by: needinformation on January 06, 2007, 09:48:08 pm
hi, i've been reading in other threads where you say that in studies conducted with mixed-status couples, there was no hiv transmission through any kind of oral sex. can you please tell me whats the source of these studies and where can I get to read them.
Also i had a very small scratch on my finger which was fresh, it was so small that it was hardly visible and there was no bleeding, and I was involved in a mutual masturbation where I got semen of the other guy on my finger, which I washed with soap and water right away. Will you recommend getting onto PEP in this case.

Thanks for all the great work you are doing!

I have read that ARS is something you get within 2-4 weeks after gettin infected. My question is will everyone who gets infected get the some kind of ARS symptoms.

You were at no risk from the situation you have provided. No you don't need PEP and a doctor would not consider giving you PEP for that incident.

need,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread (http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=220.0) so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

You did not have a risk and you do not need PEP. No doctor who has your best interest at heart will give you PEP as a result of this incident.

When you read the Welcome thread, along with reading our posting guidelines, please follow the Transmission Lesson link so you can have a better understanding of what is and what isn't a risk for hiv infection.

Here's what else you need to know: You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

While you do NOT need to test over this mutual masturbation incident, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

One of my question is left unanswered because of my two separate posts, I have gone through the guidelines now.

Will everyone who is newly infected get ARS symptoms.

Thanks

Everyone will have ARS that has been infected. Some will have symptoms and others will not have any symptoms at all.

Need, most who are infected will have symptoms. But they can vary widely in intensity or lack of same which is why often people don't even notice them when they happen. It's only after testing they recall a time close to a potential exposure when they had some symptoms.

And since the symptoms resemble so many other illnesses that's why only an HIV test taken at the appropriate time can tell you the real deal about your HIV status.

Dear Ann,

I have read in one of your responses, where you mention that there have been latest studies involving mixed HIV status couples, where no HIV transmission occured through oral sex. I would really like to read more of these, can you please tell me what studies are you talking about and where can I find these.

Thanks

need,

I get my studies off an NHS database that you have to have a subscription to. I'm sorry, but I don't have the time to search the internet to find out where they are available without subscription. I'm sure you're capable of searching the internet yourself.

The studies are also mentioned in the Transmission Lesson, by the way.

I see most of the replies in this forum from Ann, Andy Velez and RapidRod.
I dont mean to sound rude, but can you please tell me what puts you in a position to analyse the risks and other medical conditions...are you guys from some medical/healthcare background or have done extensive study or research in this field.

Thanks for all the good work.

This is a link to a study  with serodiscordant couples where no HIV transmission occured through oral sex:

http://www.aidsmap.com/en/news/2AF5DF5C-ECEF-4854-80BA-09F86B483A02.asp

Due to the fact that the study only included stable couples, it has some limitations and its results  cannot be automatically extrapolated to other situations, like casual sex with random partners.

Rapidrod, altohugh it does not really matter, but i am just curious that what puts you guys in a position to answer all these questions accurately, are your responses backed by some kind extensive study/research in this field or you are related to the medical field.

Ronaldinho, thanks for the link.
