CNN has reported that screen legend Elizabeth Taylor has passed away.

That's sad . I remember being comforted by the fact she cared enough to lend her voice on behalf of us that were suffering in silence early on in the Aids epidemic .

She was indeed a great supporter of those of us living with HIV/AIDS, she began the fight for us.  Even in death she continues to support our cause, her family is asking in lieu of flowers please send donations to Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation http://elizabethtayloraidsfoundation.org/  She is credited with bringing the world's attention to AIDS with her fund-raising and activism. In 1985, when Taylor's lifelong friend Rock Hudson died of AIDS, she brought national attention to the growing disease. It satisfying to her to use her celebrity for good - she raised and donated millions to the cause, founding the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) along with The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.  She also said correctly that "I don't think President Bush is doing anything at all about AIDS. In fact, I'm not sure he even knows how to spell AIDS."

RIP Dame Elizabeth, may your legacy live and your light shine brighter among the heavens.

I am deeply saddened by her passing.   We have lost a true giant in the fight against AIDS.   She was a legendary beauty, an academy award winning actress, and someone who truly cared about people with HIV.   She was kind enough to autograph a photo to me, back in the 90's.   I see her lovely face every morning, on my "hollywood wall" in my bathroom.

RIP, sweetheart.   I will always love you.   :'(

Rest eternal, grant to Elizabeth O Lord.
Let light perpetual shine upon her.
May the souls of all the departed,
through the mercy of God,
Rest in Peace.

Met her once at the memorial service for a mutual friend who'd died of HIV-related causes. Saluted her for her work for AIDS and gave her an ACT UP SILENCE = DEATH pin.

RIP after a life  fully lived that included working for the good of others.

Title: Elizabeth Taylor 1932 - 2011
Post by: geobee on March 23, 2011, 01:32:55 pm
I just turned on my computer and read that Elizabeth Taylor died today.  I know everybody dies and I didn't know her, but I feel like we lost a great champion for our cause today.  I remember being a little gay boy and staring at her poster in my mom's bathroom for hours.  I also remember how much and how hard she fought against AIDS/HIV.  When many stayed silent she shone with bravery and committment.  I will miss her.

PS -- wasn't sure where to put this thread.  I'm a newbie, apologies if I've put it in the wrong place.

A thread was started earlier this morning in the Off Topic section.  Perhaps the moderator(s) will notice and merge it into that one since this section may be intended to honor those who have passed due an HIV related death.  It is tragic news indeed.

Liz lived down the road from me when I was growing up, as she was briefly married to Sen. John Warner, and his weekend home outside of DC was in Middleburg.

I'm telling you though, if Liza M. goes next then I'm going too.

A beautiful lady, she will be sadly missed.

The first Movie I ever saw her in was "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" made in '58, I was 10, I sneaked into the open air cinema in Aden to watch her, of course I have seen most of her earlier movies through the years and loved them all.

R.I.P Elizabeth Taylor

Not only have we lost a beautiful shining star, but we've lost a soldier in our fight.

Grants from the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation helped hundreds of ASO's around the country, including the ASO here in San antonio. Of course she had her hands in many many AIDS charities, and championed for our cause.

A truly amazing human being.

I am greatly saddened by this news.

She was a tireless champion for people with HIV/AIDS.

I found this quote from her:

Quote
‎"I call upon you to draw from the depths of your being — to prove that we are a human race, to prove that our love outweighs our need to hate, that our compassion is more compelling than our need to blame." Elizabeth Taylor

Beyond that, she was an incredibly beautiful woman, whom I count as one of the immortals.

Requiescat in Pacem, dear lady.

SAD HUGS,

Mark

Just to add to the other kind and well deserved comments regarding Elizabeth Taylor, she truly was an amazing star.  Growing up and reaching my 11th birthday or so my cousin or a friend or two and I would go to many Saturday afternoon movies.  Liz was always larger than life on screen.  She is arguably the moost famous actress ever.  She had an amazing life, married to a hotel baron, movie industry moguls, actors, a U.S. senator and even a construction worker.  She was from an American family that moved to London where she was born, later became a child star of course and suffered a bad back injury falling from a horse in a film as a young girl and later said that was responsible for her physical sufferings in life.

Thanks to Elizabeth for her work with AmFar, amongst other ventures in battling AIDS, she was terrific for doing that for all of us.  Bless her soul for that effort alone and she helped many other folks as well.

RIP dear lady,

Jody :'(

I really think this thread deserves to be in the Living With forum.  As everyone already pointed out, she was one of the first celebrities, if not the first, to talk about HIV/AIDS.  I'm reminded that it was she who finally got President Reagan to talk about HIV--to even say the word.  As everyone knows, Reagan had not even said the word for some 6 years and after thousands of deaths.  I remember she was disappointed that he didn't go far enough in dispelling myths and fears.

Below is a link to the PBS documentary, "The Age of AIDS".  It is the part dealing with Elizabeth Taylor and President Reagan.  This was his first and ONLY speech about HIV/AIDS--May 1987.  He is booed for proposing that people with HIV be denied entry into the country.  People stood up and turned their backs on him.  The amazing, but not surprising, part of this is his speechwriter determined Reagan was totally clueless and had never spoken to his Surgeon General about HIV/AIDS.  Can you image if a virus was killing thousands of white, straight, Christian folks?  They went ape-shit over the Tylenol scare.  It took Elizabeth Taylor to write him asking that he and Nancy come to the event and give the keynote speech.

"These have always brought me luck."  Thank you Ms. Taylor.

Below:  Carol Burnett is playing a role on "All My Children" in 1983.  From what Carol said today, they were still doing live soap broadcasts in 1983.  I'm surprised they were still LIVE in 1983, but okay.  Anyway, Elizabeth surprises Carol with a walk-on.  This was not written in the script.  Elizabeth is dressed in that Carol Burnett cartoon character outfit--the one with the shower-cap and mop.  You can see that Carol almost starts to laugh, but keeps it together and ad-libs.

Modified:  The banner on the video says 1984, but Carol and Jay Leno say it was 1983.

i can honestly say she is the first celeb
that i really feel sad for her to go. :'(

the one thing i really admired about her
was that thru out her life she did what she wanted and didn't give 2 craps about what
others thought about her.
that is a courage that not many posess

The only reason I joined Twitter was to read the tweats of "Dame Elizabeth."

She was beautiful inside and out.

I just read that her Estate is valued at about $1 BILLION and that most of it is going to AMFAR and other HIV/AIDS groups.

AMFAR must be salivating, I hope they put this to good use.

Teddy thanks for that youtube clip, it was fun ;)

Here is something to make you smile.  This was when she was on General Hospital in 1981.  I believe she was still drinking alot and popping pills at the time.  She is hilarious.  Love her snorting laugh.  Unheard of at the time for a major star to be on a daytime soap but she was a huge fan.

Thanks for these bloopers.  I think she must have been drinking or popping pills at that time.  I knew she liked her soaps, but didn't realize she was on so many.  Wasn't she on "Dynasty", too?  I didn't watch that show but a few times.  I'm pretty sure she was on some night-time soap.

I don't think she ever appeared on Dynasty.  She was considered, for the role of Alexis though, along with a couple others.

At the time of her last divorce 1994, she had 600 million.  Some reports say her estate might be up to a billion.  Some reports say a good chuck will go to her foundation and to AMFAR.
Amazing.

Amazing, indeed.

I read that last year alone her main perfume (White Diamonds) sold $70 million.

She is such a big star that her estate is likely to continue making millions for years to come.

As I said above, AMFAR must be salivating. I hope they put this to good use and not to give themselves more money in salaries and perks.

Meanwhile, her jewelry collection was said to be worth a $150 million in 2002. The collection reportedly will be auctioned off, with most of the proceeds going to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation and amfAR, the AIDS charity she helped found in 1985.

The Washington Post online did a piece called "11 noteworthy deaths of 2011" and the pic they had for Dame Elizabeth was worthy of ghastly celebrity pics you've posted. I think the link below goes straight to the pic after a short ad:

Its not just for AMFAR, unless I am mistaken some of it is for her own AIDS foundation.
