Busted Computer .
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:19:30 am »
I dropped my laptop in the driveway and its dead . I need a new laptop ASAP and want your suggestions .... I'm hopeless with making choices like this .

I am online allot here on the forums and don't want to be tethered to my office desktop . I need my laptop so when I lay up in bed at night eating bonbons and spying on all of you I can be comfy . I do not game or store allot of data but it would be nice to be able to watch videos without it stopping and starting like it did on my old machine .

Mac or PC ? . I need help before 5 tonight because that is the time I retire to my boudoir and crawl into my carftmatic adjustable bed and use my rolling adjustable/tilt top hospital bed table to place me laptop on for easy reading .

I long ago gave up the personal laptop for the iPad.  If you have an Iphone, too - then this is the added bonus since you can sync between the two and what you see on one is the mirror image (email, text) on the other (for the most part).  I looked at the mac laptop and they were just too expensive for what I would be using it for (mostly just internet surfing).  Add the bluetooth keyboard and you have a reasonable replica of a laptop - but one that you can dig a nest on the couch with and not be bothered by all the cords, screen, etc.  I don't think I've had my laptop out in over a year.

It's a big change - and I started by picking up a used one to see if I could adjust.  The only thing that I use my desktop computer for is printing and detailed work with spreadsheets, images, etc.  For the run of the mill 'down time' - it's the pad.

Good things to consider . About all I do with my lap is web browsing and email .

I like what I read about macs but I am thinking it may be a waste for what I need . I want a fast quality computer that doesn't get real hot and has a long battery life . The one I broke was a an asus vivo tab rt . Its a hybrid tablet with a really sturdy docking key board but I would not want another because it runs a striped down windows version that can be very limiting . I also want at least a 13 inch screen and I don't think Ipads have that .

What about a macbook air ?  http://www.apple.com/macbook-air/

just what sort of mobility do you need? coffeeshop and mc'ds etc wifi? whats your budget like? are you ordering this or buying from stock on hand at wally world or something?

i hdmi to a big ast flat screen on the wall, and blue tooth keyboard... all through a hp desktop that i never sit at, its literally in a closet. works for the bedroom and living room tvs. i found i dont really need a laptop anymore, home is the only place i'm at a computer.

those airbooks are super nice, but with a price to match, and yeah probably way beyond what you need. my son just got one configured pretty nice, for a little less than 800. he's a college kid though, does all his work on the quad watching girls tanning.

It has to wifi and ready to travel . I would love to be cheap but want something dependable . I bought on at Wally world last year and took it back in 2 hours because the battery went down so fact and it was hot as hell to hold .

I really am overwhelmed trying to choose ... its all so much to consider but I really probably shouldn't pay a over $700 . I'm getting pissed of looking online .

Miss P is on her way home and said he would help me decide ... and has already been hurling abuse at me via text message LOL .

I'm pretty happy with it.  I haven't found anything it won't do that I need.

However,  for me,   my computer is a glorified email machine so your mileage may vary.  Can't beat the price,  and the large screen is great

That sucks.
As far as I know for ipad, you can't multitask. So if the point is lazily doing a few things at once, while you recline in your satins and feathers, sipping pink champagne, you need a fast laptop.
The basic 12" macbook pro just got price drop. It has a solid state drive, great keyboard (lighted) and mac keyboards last, has the great track pad, and a brilliant screen. I got mine two months ago. I will say the retina screen is a bit dimmer than previous HD mac screens - a dark passage in a movie is really dark. Black is black. But for reading, the retina screen is amazing.  Also its extremely light. It never heats up, period.
What I don't love is getting used to the reduced hand space on 12" laptops, coming down from 15".  But, the small size is the cheapest, and as I said, it is a very light but very solid feeling machine. The battery lasts all day, no joke.
The speakers aren't great, but you can bluetooth it or wire it to your boom box near your bed.  The big jawbone was on super sale so I blue tooth it to that.
Compare the price of the basic macbook pro and the pc version you are considering - mac might be worth it... i dunno.

Do you manage a music library, like itunes, currently? Is the library on an external drive or your laptop, or your desktop?
If you do go for a SSD, you'll want to get used to most storage being on external drives.
Sorry, can't make a recommendation for the pc equivalent to an air.

The macbook air is  beautiful machine. But i would buy a cheaper and more powerful PC laptop with more options.

The air is less than a 1000 now, isn't it?

Both the macbook air and macbook pro are sealed, you can't change things later on like adding ram, or a bigger SSD, etc.  You can't even replace a battery.

I think the macbook pro gives pc laptops a good competion for value, all things considered.  But it won't be as cheap as the cheapest laptop. But the quality pcs that compete with macbook pro are the about the same price.

Surprising every year more and more of the students at my tech university are on macs... Its gone from like 10 to 25%, and these kids aren't dumb or suckers...

Just make sure that whatever machine you get is full HD, especially if you get a smaller screen.

Well, I have a Pavilion g6-1b71ge Notebook PC.  I don't know if they make these any longer, I got it because it was required for school.  It's super-fast, has a lot of storage, and I've not had an issue with it.

Ms P uses a lot of storage I believe, with pics etc., so I guess it would depend on how much storage you need, and how much you want to spend.

I personally would not spend a lot of money on something I was not going to fully utilize.

You guys are the best . I am happy you guys talked me down from spending a bunch of money when I didnt need too . I have done some major landscaping here in the last few months and another dip into my savings is not a good thing right now LOL .

I have to find the best affordable laptop for my basic needs with a long lasting battery life . My Asus vivo tab rt spoiled me because the battery lasted all day with continuous use and I loved that ... it also never got warm to the touch, ever . I just didn't like the windows lite operating system, other than that it was a work horse .

Until this is sorted out I'm suspending the giving and getting support thing on the forum and shutting down the AM I INFECTED FORUMS so that we can concentrate on me . Your cooperation is appreciated .

Have had good luck with my Toshiba satellite . Good battery life, 15" display. Just be cautious of touch screen version. About half price of MacBook.

I like the touch screen on my broke computer ... is the Toshiba touch a problem specifically or do you not like the touch screen feature in general ?

Not big fan of touch screen.  It comes with windows 8.1 The  Internet explore on touch screen was awkward for me to use. Good thing it came with both versions of internet explorer.  you mentioned one you had got hot.  Mine has never gotten pass warm. Also it came with wireless  built in, and has never given me any trouble.

Don't know anyone who has a HP so I won't comment on it. You will like windows 8. Just make sure you update the internet explore security update. Hacker found a way in through flash player.

Anything in your price range with an i5 dual core processor instead of the Celeron?

That one still looks good for the price.

Thanks ... Im thinking about this one . http://www.amazon.com/HP-Pavilion-TouchSmart-14-b109wm-Processor/dp/B00GZAJ2NK/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1400366692&sr=1-2&keywords=laptop

What yall think ?

I think you need to hit a Best Buy or whatever to see the machines.  The one you picked is only 1366 x 768, instead of 1960 x 1080, which means the type will be rather large, which can be a pain on a larger screen.  I would check out different machines, with different resolutions to see which you like and then find the best price.  You want a minimum of an i5 processor and a i7 would be even better, assuming the added cost isn't that bad.  You want the best processor you can get, as it's the engine that runs the whole thing.

Just saw your last post and there isn't a huge difference between AMD and Intel processors, for what you want to do.  If you were gaming or processing video it would be different, but you are not, so any mid to higher range processor will work great.

Jeff,

I have 2 laptops that are relatively new.  The Dell inspiron 15 ,( purchased at Walmart) was bought back in November 2013, and I have a Toshiba Satellite C55 T -5102. That one was purchased a few  months ago.

The Toshiba is a touch screen, with a 750 GB hard drive. It came with 4GB of ram that I upgraded to 8 GB. There was nothing wrong with having just the 4GB, I just wanted 8 GB. I did the upgrade myself and not through Bestbuy.

The Toshiba has 3 USB ( 3.0 ports) CD ROM,  HDMI plug,( if you want to plug in an external monitor..

I like both these computers, and have had no trouble with either one.

If you go with a PC, Dell ( I believe) has new PC's that still come with Windows 7. You will have to check the Dell website. I also believe, HP is shipping new computers with windows 7.

IF you are familiar with windows 8, I would recommend a PC with windows 8.1 already installed.

If you get a PC with windows 8 installed, You will get nagged to update to 8.1, and eventually you will have to, to get the most current windows updates.

The Dell came with windows 8 , (4 USB ports and HDMI 500-GB hard drive) ,... so I had a free upgrade to 8.1 from the windows store APP. The upgrade from 8 to 8.1 took about 45 minutes and had no problems.

The Toshiba came with 8.1 already pre installed.

If you have a Bestbuy near you, check it out.

You should be able to find yourself a nice laptop for less than 500.00.

The Toshiba cost me $ 481.49 ( tax included. this was the one I purchased on 2/24/14

The Dell has better speakers than the Toshiba.  However I have a small set of amplified external speakers that I plug in and the sound quality is fantastic ! With tax, the Dell cost about $424.00

Both computers come with a card reader.

Microsoft wants everyone to upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1

Good luck ---Ray

I will go to best buy tomorrow ... there are four of them close by . I have windows touch 8.1 on my old laptop and loved it and wouldn't mind having it again .

I hardly ever use the touch but it does come in handy at times.  If you have to, you can negotiate the price at Bestbuy.  If you see an identical laptop, priced cheaper, somewhere else than Bestbuy's price, they will match that lower price. Don't forget to check out the Ads in tomorrow's ( Sunday's) paper.

Ok, Dell, Acer, HP, Asus, all a no. I've had all and none of them lasted more then 2 years. I have an acer (cheaper brand of Asus) for internet, and its horrible with the video card and processing stuff. But my 6 year old toshiba, cranks away like nobodies business. It's had water spilled on it, dropped, etc and runs smooth so I recommend toshiba all the time, if money allows then I'd say Mac, but it doesn't sound like it's necessary for you, although if you have an iPhone it's nice to have everything synced, and be able to text from your laptop.

I've had my current personal Toshiba laptop for a few years and have been quite happy with it.  I recently purchased another Toshiba for on the go and work stuff with Windows 8.1 and I finally figured out how to use it.  I actually am quite pleased with both Toshibas so far.  I hated the new Windows at first, but I stopped resisting change and learned how to use it.  It's better than the older versions, I just don't like change.

I got a mac-book air . I had prayed about it and the lord laid it on my heart to get me one .
The voice in my head told me clear as day to go to the apple store and get what I wanted so I obeyed . The voice was also the one that laid it on my heart to eat 5 homemade cinnamon rolls and double up on insulin this morning .

I told him to but he did not buy it -- however he can purchase it anytime online within the standard one-year warranty to economize his expenses. I also hope he was informed that he has 90 days of complimentary telephone technical support.

Ms P uses a lot of storage I believe, with pics etc., so I guess it would depend on how much storage you need, and how much you want to spend.

I do, but that's solely because I have one external drive for making a complete back-up using Apple's Time Machine app -- so I definitely recommend buying one of those. Apple has nice 2TB Time Capsule external drives beginning at $299 if you want something beautiful looking, otherwise go to newegg.com and buy something else. I own a Western Digital and a G-Force (I have two because I store porn on the other one).

EVERY PERSON SHOULD OWN ONE EXTERNAL DRIVE TO BACK UP THEIR COMPUTERS

Now, with a MacBook Air only having 128GB of storage space, which is about the same as the maximum a current iPad can have (if you shell out extra money) it's fine for managing your iTunes music, eBooks, apps, iPhoto library and a small amount of videos. Videos, meaning full length ones even in HD ones in .mp4 format (which is the basic format that iTunes will handle) take up much more space.

I would probably purchase a 2TB external drive, then partition it for your back up use and use the rest for storing things that are never on your laptop. Partitioning a drive with Disk Utility is simple if you know how to do it.

--- OR ---

You can skip external drives and only utilize cloud storage if you are willing to pay monthly fees for larger capacities. Apple's iCloud service will set you back $100 annually for 50GB, though all customers get 5GB free. But you can pay that same amount to Google for a massive 1TB of storage. Amazon also has cloud storage at various prices.

If you are a jet-setter and need constant access to everything then cloud storage is a must, otherwise I just use the free portion for small bits of information, but that's just me. Some people feel the need to be able to access their entire 150GB music collection 24/7 from any corner of the globe, etc.

I didn't get the extended warranty because it does not cover acts of stupidity like I am prone too such as dropping them in my drive way on concrete  . From what she told me the apple care plan will replace stuff like broken keys and things like that . I was super tired last night and was only on the mac for about an hour but it seems really easy to use . It said I can store things in the icloud ... ?

Very good advice -- I was extremely happy that I did this when my computer's hard drive shit the bed last month.  I lost nothing, but 1 day's worth of Quicken updates to my checking and credit card accts.

I go one step further -- I have a second external drive that travels back and forth with my mother.  I back up all my docs, music & pictures on that one.  This way, if I have a fire at my house, I don't lose all that irreplaceable items.  Mother visits once or twice a year - so it is pretty easy to do.

Jeff -- congrats on the new mac!  I wanted to go the Apple route -- but Sid wanted to maintain a Microsoft based system -- he still struggles with the iPad after 3 years!!

I use a cloud-based system "Drop box" to back up my files...
It is free and I can access my files that I put in it from any computer.

They also continue to expand the space you have available if you send an invite to someone to join it and they also install drop box.... right now I have about 8GB of storage available on it.

Works for me.

I will get an external thingy . There are some odd differences like the delete key works from right to left and is essentially functions as a backspace key . I also haven't figured out how to enlarge a page for easier reading and have it stay that way every time I come back .

The mac is way more computer than I need but its a quality product that you instantly realize the first time you touch it . I am going to mount it in the middle of a car tire so it doesn't get damaged so I never have to replace it .

You need to set up iCloud most definitely for the "Find my iPhone" function (works with your laptop too, any Apple device, I don't know why they keep calling it that name) in case it is stollen, or left in the men's room at Frankfurt Airport. But yes, you get a token 5GB of storage free which is fine for storing your contacts, calendar, notes, reminders, etc.

also, play around in System Preferences > Accessibility > Zoom for system-wide stuff

It's difficult to know exactly what you want done discussing things on a forum. Are you even bothering utilizing the support section of apple.com like I recommended or are you just being a lazyass hillbilly and coming here?

If you are working in Safari, click on "Safari" in the top menu bar, then "Preferences", then "Advanced", and then in in "Accessbility" you can select an option to "Never use font sizes smaller than…".  It applies to all Safari pages / views.

Uh, no -- I just happened to be walking by the store on my way to buy coffee beans and fancy cheese -- oh, and that DELICIOUS mortadella sandwich I had for dinner last night.

I was just trying to be helpful if you had any questions, that's all -- I will not bother offering such services in the future as obviously they are far from being appreciated. I'll stick to my private nursing counsel with Guilhermina.

Actually there's two in Alabama.

More shockingly there's even one now in Mississippi. However, there isn't one in West Virginia.

The Philadelphia metro area has seven.
