I have felt a small lump most probably a haematoma on the side of my anus and I am going to have it checked next week at a private surgeon.
Do I have to disclose my status?

Legally no, but I think medically you should for your own benefit. I personally disclose to any doctor when it could possibly give me better health care. there are many conditions that may be linked to HIV or possibly your status could affect the treatment given.

If you want an accurate diagnosis, it would be extremely foolish not to. I'm not sure what you mean by "the side of my anus," but there are a number of anal problems associated with, and/or exacerbated by, HIV. Good luck with resolving this problem.

edfu: When I push out or try to feel it, the lump is on the right side of the anus, exactly past the entrance.

edfu: It's something similar to the perianal vessels, on the same side too, that is why I said it's on the right side of the anus.

YES, YES, YES! Why would you not want a doctor or surgeon to know every aspect of your health? Would you hesitate to tell him/her if you're diabetic or had heart disease?
I have discovered over the last couple of decades that if a health professional has an issues with HIV/AIDS, it's better to know upfront and have the option of moving on. Anyways, wishing you the best for the procedure. It's not an easy one.

+/-: It's a great illustration but misleading. Right or left side makes no difference. For the purpose of visual clarification, the perianal vessels are shown in the illustration only on the right side, but the vessels surround the anal opening, which might be defined as a circle, without "sides."
I'm not an M.D., and no one can diagnose over the Internet. Look, it could be a hematoma, as you suggest, or a hemorrhoid, or it could be an anal wart from HPV (human papilloma virus), or it could be something else. Our advice remains the same: You really must tell the surgeon you are HIV-positive. Keep us posted.

edfu: Will surely keep you posted! I don't think it's a wart or an HPV since the lump looks like it's full of blood, more like a vein, purple in colour. I've used to suffer from haemorrhoids in the past so probably it could also be the case. Whatever it is, I will tell the surgeon about my status.
wolfer: I would not hesitate to tell my doctor if I were diabetic or had heart disease. I am not used to disclose my status that I am positive given the fact that I was recently dx. Thanks for your reply mate!

Hi all, just came back from the surgeon. After being examined, he just informed me that the small lump is just a haematoma and eventually it will go away by time.

Great news! I'm on day 6 of my recovery from surgery for similar issues. Glad you didn't have to suffer that fate!
