Marathon
« on: November 16, 2010, 12:53:31 am »
I want to set a new fitness goal and I am kinda, sorta beginning to consider the idea of training for a marathon. Honestly I am not much of a runner. I currently jog with my dogs 2-4 miles 3-4 times per week. The longest I have ever run without stopping is 10 miles, which I did because I got lost. I prefer running on trails and might look into a trail marathon. My reasons for running a marathon would be to have a sense of accomplishment and improve cardiovascular fitness. I am a little concerned about losing weight, because in the past when I ran regularly I would lose weight pretty fast. I hope that if I watch my caloric intake I won't lose too much.

Has anyone here run a marathon or have any advice?

Good luck, GSO! I'm guessing that the Nike commercial you posted is having a bit of an influence on your thoughts about running, too, no?  ;)  I say that because after watching it, I was thinking I need to do the same thing; I haven't done any significant running since I left the Marines but used to love it as a form of exercise and a way to spend time unwinding and "reflecting". No advice to offer, though, just good thoughts  ;)  Who knows? Maybe you can become the founder of an annual AMG 5k!

Last year I was inspired by this NY times website.  They ran articles all year and it got me started training to run what would have been my first marathon (at age 53).

http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/marathon-tech-review-picking-a-plan-and-tracking-your-progress/

Unfortunately, when I changed to a new regimen with Isentress at the end of August I had to stop while I worked out the various muscle problems. (Turned out I had to give up Isentress.)  But the articles, tools and links were inspiring at the time.

This year I've been having feet problems, but if I can find shoes that work I'm still looking to run Philadelphia some day (Philadelphia's advantages include that it is very flat and usually a little cold)

Good luck with the training

I've decided to run the San Francisco Marathon July 31. I was looking at San Diego and Seattle but the thought of running across the Golden Gate Bridge just inspires me. The only negative is San Francisco is hilly and some people on message boards have not recommended this run for first timers. One guy wrote "I left my quads in San Francisco." My friend Alex, who is in my Halloween photos, has run 6 marathons and will be running too.

Alex recommended I  go to a running store and be fitted for running shoes. The shoe guy had me step on a plate that displayed my pressure points, video taped my stride while I ran on a treadmill, watched me jog around the store and recommended the most expensive shoes I have ever purchased in my life. They were not crazy expensive but I usually don't buy clothing that isn't on sale and have never paid over $100 for a pair of shoes. I also got a book on how to train and got a list of running groups in my area.

I was completely shocked when my partner told me yesterday that he wants to run the half marathon in San Francisco! He doesn't exercise regularly and has shown little interest in my athletic endeavors so the fact he wants to do this is huge. He really wants to lose weight and knows this will help. I'm so excited about the prospect of working toward an athletic goal as a couple!

From what I've been told and seen but never experienced firsthand, is that it is a huge personal accomplishment.  All the more, with your partner.  The discipline and perseverance required must translate across other facets of your life!

Good luck!!!

Good luck Ford! It's really sweet that you'll be training with your partner. Hopefully with him along you won't get lost again. ;)

Update:

I have been increasing my distance each week and today I ran 13.1 miles, which is a half marathon. Training has been going well but Alex tells me I am doing too much and need cut back on the long runs to reduce the chance of injury. I think I will follow his advice.

I'm building stamina but I'm not very fast. Last week I was running through the park and thought I was doing pretty good. Then a group of tall, lanky 20-year-olds blew past me and I felt like a goat in a herd of giraffe.

I had my yearly physical with my doctor yesterday and he did a full exam with all the tests. Since I started running I've lost 8 lbs and my blood pressure and heartrate appear to have dropped: 90/62 and 58. My PCP is also a sports medicine specialist and I told him I was training for a marathon. His first response was "you know Pheidippides died after running the marathon, right?" He gave me a lot of advice about body mechanics, nutrition, footwear, avoiding bloody nipples and frostbite on your penis, etc. He said to only take a multivitamin and avoid supplements, such as protein powder, creatine, etc.

I'll get my lab results in a few days. I'm hoping my cholesterol and triglycerides have gone down. My doctor told me that he wasn't officially supposed to tell me to go more than 6 months without labs but if I wanted to go a year he wouldn't blame me.

Good news on the labs. My cholesterol is down to 180. My trigylcerides have dropped from 486 a year ago to 256 six months ago to 156 now. Only 6 more points and I am in normal range! Everything else is fine: VL= <40, CD4=696, CD4%= 29% (highest ever). All other labs are normal, except bilirubin which is always high due to Reyataz. My PCP tested for vitamin D, which is new, and I am on the low end of normal.

Your friend is right, you need to build and exercise your muscles, before you start going for speed. I bike and blade and I've done a couple 200 mile bike rides and stamina always wins the race. Just take it slow and you will notice as your stamina increases and your muscles become more accustom to long distance running. I really enjoyed bike marathons and I envy your crossing the Golden Gate and we want to see pictures.

It looks like my friend Alex was right about going too far too fast. I was running 12 miles on a hilly trail and had a pain in my lower right leg. I was running down a hill and going way too fast. It hurt to the point I had to limp the last 2 miles back to the car. I thought it would improve in a few days but 2 weeks later I was still walking with a limp. I went to my PCP who referred me to a specialist who I saw today. After an xray and ultrasound they determined I have a "stress reaction" (bone is injured) and probably a stress fracture (bone is broken) in my right tibia. I have a bone scan scheduled next week which will determine exactly what is going on.

They gave me an air cast and said I am not to run, weight train my legs or even walk long distances. I asked about the marathon and the doctor said if it is a stress reaction I may be able to do it but if is a stress fracture no marathon. I am really hoping this is just a stress reaction. I kind of bummed about not being able to train and I am really bummed that I can't walk my dogs. I typically walk them at least a mile every day. I've decided since I can't do anything lower body I will focus on upper body until this stupid injury heals.

I had a bone scan yesterday and I have a "grade 1 stress fracture" which is the most minor type. I'm supposed to continue to wear the air cast for about 6 weeks to allow it to heal. The sports medicine specialist will monitor my progress when I am ready to start running again. I don't think I will be able to do the marathon. By the time my leg heals I will be behind in my training and if I push myself too fast again I am just asking for another injury. I think I am going to try to transfer to the half-marathon, which I know I can do if my leg heals. I've already paid $140 for the marathon and $400 for the hotel room.

Ford, I use to love to run, I used to run in the beta-breakers marathon in S.F. every yr. until I had to stop running altogether, when my doctor found blood in my urine, he thought it might have been from having flat-feet and when I ran, my bones would pound on the pavement in my feet causing blood in my urine, running was also a requirement to keep & pass the fitness test annually, for my job @ the Sheriff's Dept.

fast forward 15 yrs later, Now all I can do is ride my bike the 9 miles up & down tramway in the NE foothills  where I live every other-day  ???

Wow, I've never heard of that happening. I'm just a newbie when it comes to running long distances. Biking 9 miles on hills isn't too shabby.

Well, now sometimes I cannot do it, but I push myself anyway with that and weight training, I do this to keep my heart-rate up & improve muscle tone.....your not a newbie @ anything with a body like yours  ;) good for you, but, in all fairness I do agree with you on waiting until you heal  :)

Hey, Ford.

I'm a little late on catching this about your leg.  I'm sorry this has happened, but I'm rooting for you to make the 1/2 marathon.  Even if that doesn't pan out, I'm still very proud of you.

You're an inspiration.  Why, I almost sat all the way up in bed today thinking of you.   ;D
