a vacation that just got f@#%ed up!!
« on: August 28, 2007, 04:54:07 am »
My vacation in San Francisco is coming to an end tomorrow.  It is the first real vacation I have had in several years.  It has been splendid until now.  As I was packing I realized I have lost my camera (which I just purchased for this trip) and am in tears.  Some might think crying over a lost camera is a bit of an over reaction, but for me it is a loss of so much more.  I seldom buy anything new for myself, clothes from consignment, home furnishings from yard sales and flea markets in order to save money.  Hell my tv was given to me by friends and it is 20 years old.  So for me to purchase a brand new digital camera was a big deal.  Now it is gone with all my great pictures.  the pictures were my souvenirs of the trip.  As the trip went on I would look back at each one and have such great memories.  Now because I am stupid and so absent minded they are gone.  Now instead of having only good memories of this trip it will be clouded with my carelessness.  Just another example of how I can continue to fuck up anything good in my life.

Feeling sad and depressed,
Woods

Woods~

I know you are kicking yourself right now.  Remember that you can buy another camera and that these times on this trip weren't, and aren't, going to be your only ones.  I know I know I know.  You invested your money in a camera, a special item for yourself, and its gone.  Are you SURE its gone?  Was it stolen?  Did you leave it somewhere?  Make a few calls in the morning to check around if you can.

On a side note, I am in Maryland and I am dying to see the Lunar Eclipse tonight.  It starts at 2:52am West Coast time, with a full eclipse at 3:37am.  For me, all of this will be starting at 5:52am on the east coast, as the sun is coming up.  I am hoping to get a view of the the beginning of it.  Take a deep breath, go outside in 45 minutes, look up, and relax.  It will be magic right before your eyes, something that you'll have a picture of in your mind.  Maybe it will help to soothe you some.

Then you can PM me and tell me how spectacular it looked.  You can be my camera!  ;)

Thanks Cindy, you are right it can be replaced and there are far worse things that can happen, but that doesn't take away the fact that everytime something good is happening in my life it just gets fucked up either by me or other circumstances.  It's just another reminder of how shit happens.  So since I can't sleep I guess I'll stay up and watch the eclipse.  Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Woods

That happended to me once, it wasn't so much the loss of the camera but the photo's.. I know how you must feel having nothing to show your friends back home or to remind you of a great holiday...I know how sad you must be feeling...somethings you just can't replace.

Hugs

Woods,

I hear ya man.   I dove into a swimming pool with my digital camera.  I wish i could say that someone took it or I left it someplace....instead it was staring me in the face, nonfunctioning, telling me, "LOSER!"

Sorry i couldn't meet up with you guys on Thursday.  Hope otherwise your visit was a blast.

Hugs,
John

Hi Woods,

Sorry about your camera.   I don't own a digital camera; when we went to Montreal last year, I think I was the only one with those little disposable cameras!   A friend has offered to loan me his for our trip to S.F., but I am nervous about taking it....

I think the old-fashioned cameras worked best for me, with a neck strap so you COULDN'T LOSE IT.    Maybe you looked dumb and "touristy" wearing it around, but at least you didn't leave it somewhere....

Cheer up, the photos you took with your "mind's eye" will remain in your heart.

hugs,
Alan

Der Woodsie,

I know how you must feel. I once left a two thousand dollar digital camera on an airplane and am still kicking myself in the arse for it. Yes, the pics in it were much more important. I feel your pain. When things like this happen at a time we feel down in our lives they tend to take on more negativity than they should, so really think about the things in your life right now. This is not anything that you should blame yourself for or think it is just the way your life is going. I hope you feel better and can still think of the great times you had on your vacation.

Take Care,

CA

Hi Woods -

I know how you feel about losing the memories you wanted to keep with you forever.

But, I have an idea.  There are going to be quite a few of us in SF next month, and I'm positive that I'm not the only one who would like to share their pics with you.  Were there special places you would like us to photograph for you?  I'm planning on doing most if not all of the walks, want to see the newly re-built DeYoung Museum, as well as other places, in Golden Gate Park, hell I will even volunteer to walk to the top of Coit Tower to get a few pics for you!

Don't beat yourself up over it, okay?

Vince

First let me say thanks for all the kind words.  Perhaps a little over reaction on my part, but as I was already sad about my vacation ending and having that sense of dread having to go back to reality, losing my camera was the straw that broke the camel's back.  As my flight doesn't leave until late this afternoon I was dreading moping around constantly thinking about losing all my pictures, but then when I came down to breakfast (staying at a B&B) I asked the innkeeper if anyone had found a camera.  As I asked I spotted on the desk my camera.  I was so happy!!!  I was very fortunate that my carelessness didn't ruin a great week.

Thank again for the support,
Woods

yeah right, I don't even like to see myself naked let alone allow someone else the horid experience.

However, I do think that I lost my camera in the hall bathroom.  Don't ask why....

Woods,

I had a great day with you last Thursday, and I remember how much you were enjoying the thought of bringing back all your pictures of San Francisco to Louisville.

I'm so glad this story has a happy ending.
