Muir Woods - giant redwoods
« on: July 06, 2007, 04:28:10 pm »
Dan asked about giant redwoods near San Francisco.

There's an awesome stand of giant redwoods in Muir Woods National Monument, about a half-hour by car north of the city. During the summer through the end of September, there's a shuttle service from the Sausalito ferry landing to the park.

The group will be taking a ferry ride to Sausalito on Sunday morning at noon. So it might be possible to tie that in with a trip to Muir Woods. If a lot of people want to do that, it might be necessary to split into two groups, since the shuttle probably would not accommodate a large group (in addition to the other non-AMG tourists).

Click here for Muir Woods website.

Thank you Allan for the link & info. I have always wanted to see those huge Redwood trees. Hopefully there will be enough interest with the group to go.

Thanks Again,

I found out that the Muir Woods website is a bit misleading. It states that there is a shuttle from the Sausalito ferry landing to Muir Woods through the end of September. When I checked into this further, I found out that the shuttle leaves from the ferry landing only through September 3rd. For the rest of September, you have to catch the shuttle in Marin City (2 miles from Sausalito), which is much less convenient.

Sorry about that!

Allan

Note to Michael (Sonomabeach): parking at Muir Woods is EXTREMELY difficult, especially on weekends. If you take a car there, try to do it as early as possible.

Hey Rich,

Very good option... Now we have two cars and can carry 10 people (or more).  With a few more cars, everyone can go to Muir Woods. Three or more people per car quailfies for the car pool rate for bridge fare on the return trip.  Have the best day

Hey Everyone,

John Oso has offered to drive his car to Muir Woods so we have room for more to see the century's old Redwood trees.  Best time available looks like after the Waterfront Walk on Saturday with a return to the city in time for our Evening Social Hour.  Have the best day

If you're planning on going to Muir Woods with Michael, John, or Rich, and if you have a disability placard for your own vehicle, bring it with you. Parking is always difficult at Muir Woods, and having the placard would enable you to park in one of the spaces for the handicapped (assuming there's one vacant).

The disabled person has to be in the car. Bring documentation, such as the notice that accompanied the placard.

(I'm pretty sure California honors disability placards from other states.)

Muir Woods is a memorable experience. I hope as many people as possible will take advantage of Michael, John, and Rich's generous offer.

I knew Herman was coming...  I did ask my ID doc about getting a handicap placard a few years ago but, I did not qualify.  Not to worry though, I can be hell on wheels in parking.  There is a commercial on local radio about traffic backed up on the 101 and some fool from L.A. is passing everyone... I think that commercial was written in my honor.  Have the best day

Hey Everyone,

We have figured out the shuttle from Sausalito to Muir Woods does not run this late in the season.
We have three drivers:
Michael, Rich and John.

We have four people who have said they want to go:
Dan, Herman, Jody and Gary

There is plenty room for more.  Have the best day

Michael,

I'm confused. Is this for Saturday or Sunday?

How are you working this? What will be the departure point and departure time for these car rides to Muir Woods?

If it's on Sunday, are you doing this in place of the Sunday ferry ride to Sausalito?

Are you doing it after the ferry ride? If so, people will need to know which ferry to take back to San Francisco and where to meet you.

Are you planning to take your car to Sausalito and pick up people there? If so, when and where?

I think it would be easier if you can figure this out in this thread, rather than at the meet & greet.

Also, is the ride on your boat still on? It wasn't clear to me from your last post on that subject.

Hi Allan,

The Muir Woods trip is for Saturday after the walk and before the evening social hour.

I think the departure point should be at the hotel.  The departure time is still open to what works best for the most people.

The Ferry Ride to Sausalito and the bay sail in my boat have a conflict of time.  This is a 1 trip or the other option.  I sdo not remember the departure time for the Ferry Ride to Sausalito but it is on the Sunday Morning thread.

The departure time for the bay sauil on my boat is open to the captain because of currents, tides, wind and weather conditions.  I will be calling the Captain tomorrow so he can check the weather and tide charts.

I will update that thread when I get the information.  as for the time being, I have a full boat for a few hours trip.  I plan on departure to be at Pier 39 but since the boat is in San Rafael, Lowell and I will bring it to San Francisco to depart and arrive at the same Pier later that day before the Social Hour.

Being this is Sunday morning and most of our friends will be out on the town on Saturday night, a few people may not be able to get up in time and may not show up.  However, I will be at the Pier with the boat at the time recommended by Lowell.  Have the best day
Michael

Michael,

Since you're planning on leaving for Muir Woods from the hotel, the following might help in making your plans.

The AMG walkers should be arriving at Pier 39 sometime between 1 and 1:30 pm. (I'm assuming a leisurely pace and taking a break at the Ferry Building.)

On Saturdays, the F-Line trolley runs from Pier 39 (actually Beach & Stockton Streets) every 7 minutes. The trip back to Powell & Market takes about 25 minutes.

Hi Michael...Thanks so much for the generous offer but I think it conflicts with the Alcatraz tour I have tickets for...But I will be in S.F. until Sept. 24th so perhaps we can do something like that during the week if you are around.

Hey Allan,

I am planning on being one of the AMG Waterfront Walkers on Saturday.  Thank you for the tip on the trolley.  I have been going too many directions all at the same time recently and the PN has been killing my legs.  I am spending as much time as possible off my feet and pretending to be in the rest/heal mode.

Hey Jody,

You are right, the Alcatraz tour and Muir Woods do conflict.  Not really surprising with so many people who have never been in San Francisco before and having so many things to do.

Thanx guys, Have the best day
Michael

I just found out that my parents are going to be visiting me the same time as AMG.
I would like to get an exact head count of those who want to go to Muir woods because if we don't have enough riders for all the drivers I would take that time to spend some time with my mom and dad and go to Alcatraz instead....they have never been to Alcatraz and I will be driving to Oregon after AMG to show them the giant red woods around Mendocino and Eureka.
I am not backing off if we have enough riders where we need the 3 cars, but if 2 cars can do the trick I would ask to pass on Muir this time.
Thanks for your understanding.

Hey Rich,

So far it seems most will be going to Alcatraz during that time.  Dan and Hermie have said they do want to see the Redwoods and John has also offered to drive his car..... Hmmmm it appears we have enough for 1 driver and 1 passenger in each car, I think we can squeeze in one Saab convertible.

Jody is wanting to go to Alcatraz but would hope to see Muir Woods at a later time, he is staying in the city longer.  I know you work but could you take some time to share the giant redwoods with Jody? Have the best day

Hey Jack,

Mendocino is really too much of a trip.  It is about 3 hours to Willits and another 45 minutes to Fort Bragg and a few more to Mendocino.  One of the small specialty TV networks shows "Murder She Wrote" and most of it was filmed in Mendocino, Fort Bragg and Noyo Harbor.  You could always tell when filming was going on because the sign to "Hill House of Mendocino" was changed to "Hill House of Cabot Cove".  ;D Have the best day

I guess I dont remember it being that far but I was staying at Sea Ranch,so maybe I got drunk and forgot how far the drive from SF was. I just remember it being a spectacular area. Come to think of it,that was three months before I found out I was positive, july 89.

Hey David,

I don't know if there is time.  The Waterfront Walk is at 10:30 on Saturday and I was thinking of leaving for Muir Woods shortly after the return.  Don't you, David and Bonnie have reservations for the 2:50 Alcatraz tour?  Just don't know if we can get you back in time to go to prizon.  Imagine, being the first person ever to be late for prizon.  Lets see if we can suffle the detaila at Meet and Greet.  Have the best day

Hi Michael,

It's not that big of a deal, actually.  We have friends that moved back that way (Oakland) a few months ago from NC that we're going to visit while we're there.  Maybe we can talk them into driving us out that way whenever our schedule allows.  We'll have a bit more freedom, in terms of transportation, than most others because of these friends.
