Any good moisturizing hand/bath soap for dry skin?
« on: February 08, 2007, 05:59:17 am »
Dont know where to stick this in the forums...but,
With this cold winter, and shoveling (and shoveling, and shoveling), my skin is dry as paper. I usually use Dial soap (don’t you wish everyone did  ;D ), but think it would be wise to switch to a good moisturizing soap for awhile. Does anyone know of a good moisturizing soap? I already use a cocoa butter lotion, but my skin drinks that up. Isn’t there a hand/body soap with cocoa butter in it??? Or a good moisturizing soap?

Try GOLD BOND ULTIMATE - healing skin therapy lotion. I purchased it at WalMart and it does a damn good job on my cracked, dry hands. BTW, how the back today? Sore? I shoveled 8" off our 300 ft. driveway yesterday and sure was glad I had some 800mg. Ibuprofen (Rx only) on hand!

P.S. Works very well on feet as well and is economically priced too.

Hey Randy,

Try Aveeno products. I have used them before, and they are quite good. Most pharmacies carry this product.

THanks for the info. This time we only got a couple inches, but its working out in 5 degree weather that dries the skin out. Cant wait till this cold spell breaks. I cant imagine how the birds and animals survive this. One farmer lost a lot of cattle, froze out in the field. I'm in the city myself, but farmers are having a hard time. 8"? Guess I cant complain about a little 2 inches we got lately. But it all adds up.
Sure miss San Diego. When I lived out there, and people ask what it was like to live in the midwest winters, I'd say just open the freezer on your refrig and imagine living in there. Now Ray, you're the smart one. Dont get too much sun...    ;)

I am a big fan of Aveeno products.  Moderately priced and long lasting.

I am a recent transplant from Michigan to Texas.  I don't miss those winters a bit!

Take care.   8)

You know what you can do? You can make your own. You can either go to a crafts store like Michael's, or shop on line at ebay or any of the thousands of sites that sell soap making supplies, and put together something real nice that suits your specific needs. Plus it's a lot of fun, and there's literally thousands of molds, scents, colors, natural ingredients you can use. I recently made myself a real good soap with olive oil and aloe, it turned out the softest soap I've ever used. If you need any specific sites for buying supplies you can pm and I can give you a few. The real effective answer is to move to Tucson...it's been in the high 70's - low 80's everyday this week!  Sorry you guys are having to do all that shoveling...no really, I am.  :)

Of course it's still a dry heat so I use Lubriderm or Nivea and for soap I got one of those big packs of Oil of Olay soap at Costco and it seems to work well.  Guess everybody has their own favorites

I use Dove soap, which a lot of dermatologists recommend.  My derm also recommended Aveeno, which seems to work well.

Hey Randy,

I use Dove soap also.  I used to have dry skin until I started using it regularly, and it smells nice too.

Try the Aveeno products.  They have always worked for me specially now with the rashes and hives from the meds.  Try the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash and on other days you can soak in the bath tub for a while using the Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment which is an oatmeal bath.

Good luck.

Maybe I am simple but I have Dove soap is amazing.

I also use Clinque brand moisturizers, yes, they are pricey but they work wonders and use a lot less of it daily then over the counter drug store stuff.....

On a side note, Elbow Grease (yes the sex lube) works really well at getting rid of callouses on your feet and hands.
The difference between an overnight and a layover is luck!

Several years ago my doctor recommended I stop using Dial and start using Dove soap and Eucerin body cream. My skin was dry and flaky. It looked like I had dandruff on my arms and legs.  The Dove doesn't seem to dry out my skin like other soaps do.  I have discovered that I need more Eucerin in winter than in summer.  South Texas winters are not as cold as those in other parts of the country, but they can be awfully drying on the skin when we have low humidity.  I liked the response from J220 about making one's own soap, sort of tailoring it to each person's own preferences.  It may be less expensive in the long run and might work just as well as Dove and Eucerin.  Those two products, good as they are, put a strain on this retired man's check book.

Another option is a soap called "Cetaphil". I use the hand lotion and the facial moisturizer because it was recommended by my partner's mother and it works well for me. I buy it at Walgreen's ( just a little expensive). It's for dry sensitive skin. Good luck.

As Pippet says in the next message, Walgreen's does have it's equivalent brand of the same product for much less $$$. I bought the Walgreen's brand Moisturizing Lotion (fragrance free) for less money and the bottle was even bigger. Just read the little notice that says "Compare to the ingredients of Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion". Mine is a 16 Fl. Oz. bottle.

My Derm. recommended this lotion.  It is very gentle on sensitive skin.  Walgreen's has their own brand that is almost halve the price of Cetaphil.

Well what I ended up doing is using Olay Moisturizing Bar and I got the kind for sensitive skin. It seems to have no perfumes like the other olay brands. It works pretty good. Also, the weather here finally is back into the 30's. Its those below zero streaks that dry my skin. I want my global warming!!!  :P

My wife got me Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture. It works really well for me when my skin gets red around my neck from time to time or when I'm feeling itchy somewhere. I'd highly recommend it if you are experiencing any of this. I'm on Atripla which I think causes this from time to time when coupled with lots of indoor heating.

I buy melt and pour glycerine in 8lb blocks from a local soap making supply store - Glycerine is hygroscopic - it attracts moisture. With a bit of citric acid or a base you can customize the PH to whatever works best with your skin, You can add vitamin E oil and other good stuff.... Even add a bit of whatever fragrance matches the cologne/perfume you wear. It's a fun & easy hobby and makes a great gift 2.

Hello,

I have eczema and have to stay away from deodorant soaps.........and I loved the scent of Dial.
Aveeno and Dove are both good products...................but I see no one has mentioned Tone, which does have cocoa butter in it.  They have a bar called Mango Splash which I think smells nice and their is just the original Tone with cocoa butter.

I love those vegetable soaps like the Thymes brands with many great scents, but they are quite expensive.  My roommate gives me a few bars for Christmas.
