  • HIV+ since 1993. Relentlessly gay.
Another example of how bigotry and stupidity are two side of the same coin.

Now that I think about it, it is probably more like two sides of a twenty-sided die of hate: racism, misogyny, nationalism, homophobia... excuse me while I go work on my analogies.

  • "Butterflies are free."
And, if I am not mistaken, Irving Berlin, a Jewish immigrant, wrote "God Bless America".

Racism should be dumpster ready.

i'm curious and haven't seen anything about this - why was he singing "god bless america"? do they not open ballgames with the national anthem these days? Or was this song at some other point in the festivities?

I don't know exactly, but I have noticed that most games held in New York since 9/11 have used God Bless America instead.

I could be totally off base though.

Very sad.  Racism isn't just something found in rednecks in the south.  Perhaps it is time to discuss all the racism in the blue states.

Maybe it's all that rocket's red glare imagery? It's bloody hard to sing anyway.

Even though I've been here 22 years now, it still happens that when I hear God Save the Queen I hear My Country 'tis of Thee in my head. Theatre programs and other public events are often ended (not started) with a nod to the Queen. Here on the Rock, God Save the Queen('s corgis) is always followed by O Land of My Birth, the Manx National Anthem. It's actually a pretty little ditty.

But it shocks me how racism is still alive and well still sucks around the world. It's (perhaps surprisingly) not too bad here on the Rock and in the years I've been here, we're becoming more and more diversified - nearly by the week, it seems.

In recent years we've had a fairly large influx of Eastern Europeans (mainly from northern, ex-Eastern Bloc countries) and it's not unusual to walk down the street and hear Russian, Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian being spoken. The various Eastern Bloc ethnic groups all speak Russian (plus their native language, plus English, and many of them also speak two or three more languages besides) so you hear Russian the most.

But my point here is - yes, I'm getting to one - is that while people complain that "they're living in an English speaking country, they should speak more English", I've come across very few who really have a big problem with them being here. I've lost count of the Manx/European marriages I know of in the past five-ten years. Most people stop moaning when they realise that these immigrants usually have three or four more languages than the locals - it kinda shames them into silence.

Racism stuns me. I. Just. Don't. Get. It.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Mexican born, current American citizen, married to French billionaire and living in Paris, Salma Hayek, sang a charming Star Spangled Banner on David Letterman last week, and supposedly pissed off Mexicans in doing so...
