An Anniversary of Sorts
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:25:18 pm »
Today marks 4 years since my HIV diagnosis.  It's odd, in a way.  It seems like so many things have changed.  When I think about it, though, it seems like so little has changed.

I guess the biggest differences are that I've met a lot of wonderful people, been to some great places, and feel like I'm more aware of how fortunate I am.  I realize how loving and accepting my family and friends are and what a wonderful husband I have.  I better understand the issues that others have in terms of health care.  More than anything, I guess, I realize how ignorant I was of HIV and of people living with it.  One thing that's a bit odd to me is that the passing of our eldest cat (13.5 years old) earlier this week has been more difficult than accepting my having HIV.

We didn't do really anything to celebrate this anniversary, though I did watch Pedro on Netflix.  I'd like to thank members on this site for the support I've received here.  It's been an integral part of dealing with my HIV / AIDS.  On thing I'm not happy about, though, is  the recent drop in my T-cells (in my sig. below); what's up with that?   ???  Anyway, here's to many more anniversaries.

If you look at your cd4s from '08 until now it's easy to see that 944 was simply and outlier.  Your numbers are really just very stable between ~650-750

Stop being greedy and enjoy your anniversary.

It seems strange to wish ya a happy anniversary--just doesn't seem right.  Happy Anniversary on your journey with this virus and many more happy and healthy ones.  That sounds better.

David,

I remember when you first joined this site. I can remember a topic you posted, shortly after you became diagnosed.  ( certain posts stick with me)  You were talking about driving your motorcycle, one day, and having to pull of the side of the road.  You were having a rough day that day, and you had to pull over to have that moment of grief. I am sure I responded to you back then, telling you that it was alright to do that, that you needed to do that. It was all a part of healing process, and moving on.

You've come a long way since then.  Your numbers are great. Just wishing you the best , and many more years of good health.  I,ve always said, that if you can't find something to smile or laugh, at everyday, your not living. I think your living pretty well.

David,

It's odd how the day of diagnosis sticks with us and makes us want to acknowledge it (can't really say celebrate).  I guess like other events with "anniversaries" it's a point that splits our lives into before and after.
So, while I won't congratulate you on the anniversary -- I will congratulate you on your ability to accept your new "after" and to continue living your life with fun.

I don't consider this virus a blessing, but it has given me some gifts -- meeting you and your hubby once one of those.

Finally -- so very sorry about your cat -- I know how hard it is to lose a cherished pet.

Hugs,
Mike

   David,

It's been 4 years already?  Feels like I've seen you around for atleast twice that long...  Like Ray, I remember when you first joined and I've always been impressed with how strong you are.

Thanks guys.  It's good to see the same support is here as was when I first joined... back on the old forums, in fact.  Yeah, four years does fly by.  I've enjoyed getting to know people online and, especially, in person at AMG's and otherwise.  Mike, I think you said it well:  "I don't consider this virus a blessing, but it has given me some gifts..."  I look forward to seeing you and your hubby in Vegas.  Hopefully, we'll have the same old gang with a lot of new attendees.

Ray, I do remember that day on the bike when I had to pull over.  Just as with losing a pet or a loved one, it's important to allow ourselves to go through whatever adjustment period we need with HIV.  It's not a punishment or something to feel ashamed about.  It's just the unfortunate result of an action or activity.  Whatever.  All we can do is accept what is and move on with it.

Just a quick note to add:  your CD4 percentage has improved even though the number dropped.  Most experts say to watch the percentage...this is good news.  I know how hard it is to lose a cherished pet...there have been numerous ones in my life and I still miss them!

See you all in Vegas (Bonnie included I hope!)

David,

I find it hard to wish you a happy anniversary under the circumstances, So I wont.

But what I will do is echo your statement about meeting alot of wonderful people, and to let you know that for me one of those wonderful people is you. You're a stand up man and I enjoyed hanging with you and "the other David" in Boston.

Congrats on your 4 year milestone, I'm 2 years behind you :)

Hi David

Like you I have meet some wonderful people and been to places I never thougth I would ever visit..and like Mike I will congratulate you on you accepting your status with grace...and just give you a big ole NZ hugs.

The only reason I celebrate on the day of my diagnosis (5th April 2002) is because my beautiful Border Collie girl Annie was born that day.

i celebrate my diagnosis day for the same reason I'm about to be celebrating ageing (my bday is coming up soon) - because I made it this far! ;D! I was supposed to have died from that PCP way back on my 34th bday in 1996. Even yr I get older is a celebration of a year I never thought I'd have. Each time I pass my diagnosis day (12/16/92) is another time I can thumb my nose at HIV and claim to have "beaten" it another year (unlike my partners, and old friends, who have lost their battles).

So WooHoo! to you David. There's another year you've beat the bug with the drugs.
Happy Anniversary and 100 more!! ;D

David, Happy Anniversary!

I look on each anniversary of my diagnosis as another year above ground and enjoying the sunshine.

So, hell yes! Have a happy day, give your hubby a hug (and a squeeze) for me and toast the day because you're still here.

HUGS,

I'm sure a 10" cock in your face would only have you wondering about future dates with it's owner.

David, congrats on making it another year!  And my condolences concerning your cat's death.  Sorry those things have to happen.

I just realized my 1 year diagnosis anniversary is going to be during the Las Vegas AMG.  I'm pretty sure it's August 8th.

Anyway, I too hope you have many more ahead of you David.

David, it is nice to hear you are doing good at your 4th year mark. May you have many more years of successful results from your therapy. I only hope I am equal to you upon my 4th year anniversary.

Hey whats going on in Vegas by the way. I go to Vegas monthly. I usually stay at the Mirage. Its gay night there on Sunday nights at the Revolution. That place rocks.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat.  My cat got sick with what we think was cancer or what they call Feline AIDS.  She died in my arms.  In some weird attempt to remember her, I video taped her last moments.  I have never watched it and don't plan to.  I don't even know why I did it---very grim.  My dog is now 14 and I dread going through that again.  I really don't think I will be able to handle it.

So, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss.  They are our best friends and our children for those of us who don't have real kids.

Today marks 4 years since my HIV diagnosis.  It's odd, in a way.  It seems like so many things have changed.  When I think about it, though, it seems like so little has changed.

Like others have stated, congratulations sounds so weird... I'm glad you are still around and that I have the opportunity to get to know you! Many, many more!

My oh my, time goes by so quickly; seems only yesterday we were welcoming you here honey.  I was always so proud of the way you accepted and dealt with your situation; very exemplary, for someone newly diagnosed.   Hope I was able to help you in some teeny tiny way, along your journey thus far.

Celebrate those milestones honey, they are well-deserved.

Many hugs,

Alan

Thanks Alan (and everybody else, too)!  You were helpful.  I remember us PM'ing about camping in GA way back when I first joined... it sure has gone by very quickly, that's for sure.  I know it's easier said than done, but what else is there to do but to accept and move forward.  What helped a lot was hearing the experiences of those who've been dealing with this and learning from them.  To know that my situation in terms of HIV wasn't really unique was comforting.   :)

Also, thanks for the thoughts about our cat; she is missed by hubby and I as well as her feline siblings.
