Hi everyone

Meg gave birth to Deejay (Debra Jane) two hours ago, mum and baby are just wonderful and doing really well...even though she came 8 days early, I thought she wasn't due until Feb but when we received her papers we realized it was the 19th of this month.

The others are very protective of her already but Meg has no problems with me holding her...she is so beautiful, and I'm so happy and glad that everything well so well for her.

Hugs
Jan :-*

Jan,

Deejay is so cute I want an alpaca, too!  I wonder if there are any officious U.S. laws against alpaca ownership?  What do alpacas eat?  Would a 30' X 20' yard be big enough for one?  Would they smoosh the cats?

Congratulations on the new addition!

Hi everyone

She is beautiful isn't she..... :D

Teresa...she will keep her colours, Alpacas don't change, the grey came from her father who was an all grey stud.

Thanks to you all for loving my baby as much as I do, now I have to start looking for another goodlooking guy for Meg, if we want her to have another cria then we have to mate her within the next couple of months.

I managed to get a photo of Deejay with her big brother Java and her mum Meg, it wasn't easy with the others hanging around trying to protect her... :D

Boo..I think you would need a bigger yard, a couple of acres at least.. :D..Alpacas feed on oat pellets, lucern hay, Chaff and lots of meadow grass...they are very hardy animals so no big vet bills and I do their 3 monthly injections myself.

Alan..when she first came I didn't think she would be able to stand on those legs, they are like 4 little twigs, i thought as soon as she puts weight on them they would snap... ;)

Lisa..it was good to hear from you , it's been a while..tell sweetie thanks for the kisses.

Jay..Thank you for the compliment on my Avatar... :-*

Thanks to you all, I know you are all wonderful animal lovers.

Hugs
Jan :-*

Here's a little blessing for our new baby:

Blessed are you, Lord God,
maker of all living creatures.
On the fifth and sixth days of creation,
you called forth fish in the sea,
birds in the air and animals on the land.
You inspired St. Francis to call all animals
his brothers and sisters.
We ask you to bless this animal, Debra Jane, and
the remarkable lady who cares for her.
By the power of your love,
enable them to live according to your plan. May we always praise you
for all your beauty in creation.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen

Noooooooooooo! No jokes about eating alpacas, please. It makes me sad.

Send as many pictures as often as you like, Jan. She's a loveable beauty and I am just picturing what it would be like to have her sniffing around in my living room. Yah I know that wouldn't work, but I'm not always interested in what the world calls "reality," and I know she'd be a great companion.

Do alpacas make sounds? I mean like goats or what? Alpaca lesson, please, Jan.

Hi Andy

Yes Alpacas do make noises...3 different ones if fact.

1..Humming..this is done in normal communication..when they are happy and content.

2..A clicking sound..this can mean several things, if they come up to you clicking it can mean friendship or it can mean they are a little nervous of you (but mostly a friendship click) also Meg clicks alot when the baby wonders away from her and the clicking bring her back to Mum's side..so it can mean gather round or come here.

3..A barking sound..they call it barking but it's not like a dog bark..it's more like a high pitch Whooping sound ..if you know what I mean...this is used when preditors are around and a warning to the rest of the pack to run away...I have only heard this once..when we first got Rocky (the border collie) Blackjack who is used to Annie running around didn't recognise this dog to he warned the others that a different animal was around...it frightend the bloody life out of me when I heard it.. :D...the humming and clicking I hear all the time...here endeth the first lesson.... ;)
