South Africa: State Plaudits for Aids Activist Achmat

Let us not say that international AIDS conferences serve no purpose at all...

"Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge last night signalled a sea change in government's HIV/AIDS fight, saluting Treatment Action Campaign chairman Zackie Achmat for leading the campaign for AIDS treatment.

She said SA had been embarrassed by criticism of its AIDS programme at the 16th International AIDS Conference in Toronto in August, saying that had brought about the realisation that government policy had to change."

Here's to big fag Zackie in SA! Plus the other activists, including you Mr US Citizen Greg Gonzalves, ex of GMHC, who put SA policy failure onto the world stage this August gone in Toronto.

Hey Newt,

Thanks for the article. Zackie Achmat is a true warrior in this AIDS fight:

"We need as a country to thank him," she said. "He risked his own life so that treatment with antiretrovirals could be made free of charge in our public health facilities."

God, It's about time. As a South African living in the states, my heart breaks when I think of the state of the health system. Something needed to be done and it's about damn time someone did it. Achmat will be in my thoughts forever.

Lisa being a South African and still living here if it is ravaged it is because of ignorance, there are still so many South Africans that is naive and arrogant regarding HIV/AIDS and uneducated about hiv. Yes he has done much more for HIV/AIDS than our own Health minister. Which by the way was in hospital for 3 weeks approx for some "lung infection" as they had it over the news and radio stations and this makes me wonder does she or doesn't she have ???????

I am proud to be a South African. It is now time for the next generation to take over this fight and to educate those around us
