risk from blood
« on: August 19, 2010, 10:22:15 am »
Hi,

Thank you very much for the help you are giving to all of us,god bless you

I was in a accident and would like your opinions for my risk, and if it is real or mostly in my head

About 3 weeks ago i used a public toilet, and because it was a little dirty i picked up the toilet sheet with my leg, then i saw that the toilet sheet was full of blood which was fresh(propably from the girl that used the toilet a few seconds before me)
Now comes the scary part.I had a wound on this leg from shaving 10 hours earlier. My wound was bleeding and i had to put a bandaid for the blleding to stop.(it wasnt a very small wound)about 1 hour before i go to the toilet i took off the bandaid for the wound to heel faster.
so my wound was still wet, red(but not bleeding)and when later i put alcohol it burned so i guess it was still open.i am not sure if the blood come in contact with my wound, because later i started thinking about this and freaked out
Please help me understand what is the risk..if the blood was infected it couldnt have died because it was very fresh.

and sorry for my English i am not from US

At no time were you at risk of contacting HIV. HIV is not transmitted by environmental objects.

As Rod has told you, you are worrying needlessly. Contact with blood in the manner you have described is absolutely not a risk for HIV transmission. HIV is a fragile virus and is not transmitted from environmental surfaces such as toilet seats, doorknobs, food, utensils, kissing, touching objects of any kind or clothing.

Period.  There is no cause for further concern on your part about this incident.

thank you very very much.
the thing that scares me is that the blood was liguid/wet and everywhere i read says that hiv dies in the air when it is dry.and also my wound was open with no scab
so your opinion again is that i had no risk and no need to test over this?

It doesn't matter that the blood was still in liquid state. HIV is simply not passed in the manner you are concerned about. Period.

Andy thanks again,

One last question if you could answer me.
I would like to understand why there is no risk for peace of mind.

The blood wont be able to infect even if it is wet and it is only seconds between blood and contact with wound?
Αnd the wound that is not bleeding but it is still open/wet/red it is possible for the virus to enter?

HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host (unlike many bacteria or fungi, which may do so under suitable conditions), except under laboratory conditions, therefore, it does not spread or maintain infectiousness outside its host.

Hello again,
sorry for coming back with the same type of questions but i am really worried and scared,i am thinking about this and cant work or sleep well.
Also i have some symptoms and i am worried, sore throat pain and i think slight fever.
Everywhere on the web says that hiv is unable to infect when the fluid it is dry.but when the fluid is still fresh?

When you say that hiv can not reproduce outside its living host what do you mean? the fliud/blood which is still fresh and wet wouldnt be its host that keep it alive until started to dry?
dont know if i am wrong but thats how i understand it.

Αnd the wound wouldnt have to create a scab for the virus not be able to enter?it wasnt bleeding but the wound was still fresh with no scab
if it was one /two drops of wet blood on that wound wouldnt be a risk?

i am sorry if i disturb you but i am worried and dont know what to think
thank you

OK, I am just going to say this once again. HIV is a very fragile virus. It very quickly becomes unable to infect when exposed to the air.

Even though your wound didn't have a visible scab, your skin begins healing over virtually immediately although the clear covering is not visible to the naked eye.

Please believe me, if HIV was as easy to contract as you fear, we would have known it long before today. You are worrying needlessly and there is no need for testing. I am also going to caution you that you won't be allowed to return endlessly about this non-risk incident. You will quickly find yourself getting a Time Out from the site.

We're very careful about evaluating  each situation. Yours was not risky no matter what your doubts and fears tell you to the contrary. Get on with your life.
