You can still get the flu even if you've had the flu shot. The shot only covers you for what they expect the several dominant strains of the season to be, not every strain.

Same thing happened to me.  Got a flu shot for the first time in years, and got the flu.

The flu shot actually contains strains of the flu, so all we're really doing is making sure the flu gets into our bodies 100%!

I have been a bit under the weather for past few months- worse the past two weeks. ENT put a scope down my throat and says that my voice box looks tore up - She is going to check it again in a month to make sure there is nothing else going on....

ID doc took three cultures last week -
The strep came back negative -
The other two got kicked back by the lab - so she emailed me tonight that I am supposed to come in again this week and get the two cultures done again, but she is going to give me some type of antibiotic intramuscular injection in my arm as she thinks it may be something bacterial....

We shall see.... in the meantime, I have been getting lots of orange juice, advil, thera-flu severe cold and flu....

The flu shot actually contains strains of the flu, so all we're really doing is making sure the flu gets into our bodies 100%!

This is ridiculous!  The flu shot contains inactivated (e.g. KILLED) virus -- it simply can NOT, under any circumstances, cause anyone to get the flu.
The flu mist, contains attenuated (weakened) virus -- there is little chance of it causing disease in healthy adults -- HIV Positive individuals should NOT get the mist.

So, technically, a flu shot DOES get the flu virus into your body -- of course, they are DEAD.  Know facts before making outlandish insinuations

Drives me batty that I hear this crap every year.

I always thought even if you get the vaccine, and even if you come into contact with one of the strains it protects against, you could still possibly get sick--it isn't 100%?  I mean, it works very well, but is not a sure guarantee?  And, it takes a few weeks to develop a response.

I think it is better than the pneumonia vaccine, no?  I was told one may still get pneumonia, but the vaccine should make it less severe.  Older folks often get a stronger flu vaccine, right?  A double dose or something.  I've wondered why doesn't everyone do that, especially those with compromised immune systems.  We don't check titers for flu, like we do with the heps.  I hope I am not just pulling that out of my ass, but thought I read the elderly often receive a stronger dose.

Any corrections would be appreciated.

The vaccine consist indeed of "inactivated" current variety flu virus. Your body will develop an immune response, hence the sometimes flu like symptoms but NOT a real flu. When you later get in contact with the real virus, you still might get the real flu but with milder symptoms.

I was told, way back, that people with a severely compromised immune system may fail to develop an adequate immune response from the vaccine, thus still get the real flu (full force).

Hope you feel better soon.

I've heard that if you have cold or flu symptoms that you should not get the vaccine until you are all cleared up, or it may make you more sick.
Pray God you can cope

Should I be wearing a mask to read this . Hope you recover quickly .

I have been dodging sick people all month trying to avoid the flu plague . Every New Years I go to the beach with some friends and I missed last year because I was sick , so when my friend Tim was here last weekend and became ill I asked if I could get him anything , he said no and I told him good , now go home .

Each year, the CDC predicts which strain is mostly likely to be prevalent.  It is basically a guesstimate as it needs to be produced many months in advance.  Sometimes they get it wrong and people come in contact with a different strain than they were inoculated against.

I must be freakish as I've never had the flu and don't even recall having a cold in recent years.  I go straight to the severe infections. ;D

Proper hygiene is still one of the best preventative measures in addition to the shot at protecting against the flu.

Hope all you sickos get well soon.

I'm surprised that doctors aren't explaining this to people.

I don't see a problem with that - the only thing I am missing, I must let you know, is a long purple dildo.....

I think I may have lost it at the airport on one of my recent business trips.

First I have been online today -
Slept until 5:30 pm ---- woke up three times during the night and got sick (as the medicines and orange juice tore up my stomach)
Fever topped off at 102.8 last night.
It finally broke this afternoon and has been staying around 101 for the last few hours.
See my doctor tomorrow.... just to make sure that nothing has went into my lungs, as I have a pretty nasty cough coming straight from the depths of my chest ---- sounds really, really "yucky."

I'm hoping that I through the worst of this....
Boss told me to take tomorrow off and use the weekend to rest.

I would not wish this on my worst enemy (okay - that is a lie) - but I wouldn't wish it on most people who are not my enemies.

The FLU sucks!

What a great night to be bed ridden, there is a marathon of Les Miserables Movies on TCM, a sampling of 3 different movies...the one form 1932 is on now  :D

Yes, I should call my doc if it doesnt get any better tomorrow. it's jsut that my head feels like it is going to explode, and the body aches. blah. hence all the otc pain relief. However I suppose I could jsut pop a Methadone and be done with the apsirin for awhile  :P

OMG -- you two (Wumpy and Phil) seem to be in some sort of contest here......  Although my money is on Willy being a tad dramatic ;-P   -- but if Phil is missing work he MUST BE SERIOUSLY SICK!!!

Rest easy you two -- call your docs and please, keep all your nasty viruses to yourselves!!  I want none of them up this way -- of course, I got my flu shot months ago.

Hugs,
Mike

I think your question was rhetorical, but it was 4,000 mgs per day.   I think it's been lowered, or recommended.  2,000 per day, if you drink.  My gastro doc said they prefer patients to take Tylenol over NSAIDS, even those with liver issues.
