Change in regime

Hey all,

It was been a few months since last posting.  I alway enjoy reading the forums and have learnt a lot!

I need to ask for peoples thoughts/advise on the following change in regime my physician has recommended.

I've been on the following for 2 year with great results (CD4=1360 VL<50) and I'm hesitant to change.  The once a day regime is:
Ritonavir (Norvir)
Atazanavir (Reyataz)
3TC (Epivir)
Tenofovir (Viread)

The proposed new once a day regime is:
Ritonavir (Norvir)
Truvada
Atazanavir (Reyataz)

Essentially the only change is the Truvada which is tenofovir and emtricitabine combined.  I understand that emtricitabine and 3TC are very similar so the only real drug change is from 3TC to emtricitabine. 

The rationale that my physician used was to simplify my regime - though I have never missed a dose and have no problem with my regime.

My questions are these:
Is this change really necessary?
Will I experience new/different side effects?
Will the change have any positive (pun intended) changes (e.g. less gas, etc...)
