An interesting and timely topic. Unfortunately the tone of the last paragraph:

Gutierrez defends her habit, calling HIV research confusing. “I never know what to believe,” she says. “I’ve been healthy so far, so I’m not quitting yet.” Even if it does send her CD4 cells up in smoke.

is trite and the style is unprofessional. Poor reportage by Cristi Hegran, I think.

apart from being trite it also contradicts all research evidence up till now.

everywhere i look: Terrence Higgins trust, Nam, body pro, they are all full of articles which, although they stress that smoking is bad for you (obviously) ,also report that smokers have a higher CD4 count than non smokers

it is also true that they tend to have a lower % ratio.

i know from personal experience that when my CD4 count dipped from 177 to 98 ( well documented inhere ) the first question i was asked by the 4 different doctors i was interviewed by was
" have you quit smoking recently"

so i deduce that the article highlighted here is loaded with medical  inaccuracies.

As much as I want to(maybe not bad enough) to quite smoking, I have been unsucessful.  BUT my vl remains undetectable and cd4 good.  Had a lung x-ray recently, a little dark but no prob.  My docs both give me hell cause I got that gig pack in my pocket, but can't really say anything except it's bad for my health in general; hell I've known that for 30yrs, LOL.  Not yet convienced about second hand smoke either;  While I have cut back considerablly, it's still a part of my life, like a few beers, I used to be a real lush, LOL.  Damn. I'm getting old, how long do I want to live anyway?  Am over the lung cancer thang. even people who don't smoke get it and the air I breath daily when I go outside isn't exactly healty.  So I am at risk, at this point in time when docs say quiting could add 2 yrs to my life, not a biggy.
