Pill to prevent ambiguous "female" genitalia

Medical treatment carries possible side effect of limiting homosexuality.

A prenatal pill for congenital adrenal hyperplasia to prevent ambiguous genitalia may reduce the chance that a female with the disorder will be gay. Critics call it engineering for sexual orientation.

By Shari Roan, Los Angeles Times

August 15, 2010

_____________

So the issue boils down to this, I think:

"Most clinicians speak about this treatment as ambiguous-genitalia prevention," said Dreger, who co-wrote an editorial about the treatment in a July publication of the Hastings Center, a bioethics organization. "Others suggest that you should prevent homosexuality if you can. But being gay or lesbian is not a disease and should not be treated as such."

----------------

I don't think we should fuck with mother nature when it comes to engineering for sexual orientation.  I guess most members of this forum would agree with that.

So the next question is - should medical science fuck with mother nature when she is creating "ambiguous" gender?  Intersex.

In the article, is seems that the common medical practice is to offer the pregnant lady two choices to "correct"
intersex - 1) the prenatal chemical treatment (hormones) or 2) post-natal "corrective" surgery for the more "severe" cases.

"The treatment of such disorders has long been the subject of debate. Early surgery to assign a child's gender is controversial, but prenatal treatment for congenital adrenal hyperplasia is even more alarming, said Anne Tamar-Mattis, executive director of Advocates for Informed Choice. She adds that the complicated surgery carries risks, including infection and nerve damage, and that parents may not be adequately counseled beforehand. The group favors allowing children born with intersex conditions to participate in decisions about their gender identity, including delaying a decision until adolescence."

I'm a little confused on what exactly any of this means.  The pill "corrects" the intersexed genitals to be female?  What does this have to do with lesbianism?

Well Hell, if the topic is interesting you'll have to read the article. Otherwise.... it's complicated.

The article says girls born with congenital adrenal hyperplasia are more likely than average to become lesbian.

No I think I get what's going down.  GLBT group perceives threat to homosexuality in the womb and takes offense, disregarding the medical treatment of the disorder entirely.

Too simple, Hell.

It's a given that GLBT doesn't jive with genetic engineering against possible homosexuality.

The 2 ethics questions the doctors are asking - 1) they don't want some doctors advertising the possible prevention of homosexuality as a bonus for the hormonal treatment of a "disorder" in the womb.

And 2) ANOTHER MAJOR POINT - it is debatable if "intersex" is something that needs correcting in the womb, or childhood.

If you see it intersex as calling for "medical treatment of the disorder" -- then you are missing the second point the people are raising.
