That threat is troubling for two reasons. First, gonorrhea is abundant: it is the second-most reported infectious disease in the U.S., with more than 600,000 new cases a year. Second, if untreated, it can cause widespread organ damage, pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Making matter worse, our current methods for tracking and controlling gonorrhea are actually contributing to the spread of resistant disease.

It drives me nuts over in Am I the way people worried about hiv - but rarely ever seem to stop and think about all the other MUCH more easily transmitted STIs they may have picked up. Gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis can often be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know is to test. (I wish the article had mentioned how gono can be present without noticeable symptoms, but if they did, I missed it.) They test and test and test and test and test a-bloody-gain for hiv, but the majority never once mention testing for other STIs. I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall sometimes. :-\
