How do you send/receive Personal Messages?
« on: September 01, 2009, 06:26:42 pm »
Hi Everybody!

I'm a newbie on Poz Forums, and somebody sent me an email; despite the fact that my email address is hidden.

I'm leery of responding, because the last thing I need is to start getting more spam.; but I don't want to be rude either. The person's email message sounded sincere.

Can someone please explain how to send PMs. I've seen posts where people say something like: 'Feel free to PM me'.

Any help or information will be appreciated.

Thanks.

First of all, to rectify the email issue you need to alter your profile settings.  Go to the icon above the "Welcome" title bar labeled "Profile" then go to the box labeled "Modify Profile" and click on the specific line called "Account Related Settings" -- then in this section you will see a place under the email you used to register your forum user name that if you check the box it will hide your email from public viewing.

Then to send a private message to someone all you need to do is hit the "IM" icon under their user name when ever you see a post.  Alternatively you can go to the "User" box in the upper left corner of your screen and hit "PM" and that will open a window where there's a line that says "New Message" -- click that and you can compose a PM that way too.

I'm surprised that the email issue isn't checked off by default -- who in the world wants their email accessible to everyone?

Hidden emails ARE default. Maybe Puck accidentally changed it? It's happened to other members now and then when they were new to the forum software.

Puck, welcome to the forums!

Thanks for the info everybody. And thanks for the welcome, Ann.

About the emails:

I had hidden my email address; so I don't think the person could see my email addy; however, I did receive an email at my hidden account and didn't want to reply; because then the person would certainly have access to  my addy. Hope that explains the confusion.

I didn't know you could still receive emails at an account that is hidden.

I will follow Philicia's advice regarding How to send a Personal Message; and if I have any problems I will be back.

Thanks again.

Hello Puck and welcome aboard.  If someone had sent you a PM you would get a copy of that message in the email that you registered.  Perhaps that was the case?  Check the sender; if it says AIDSMEDS it is no more than that.  :)

Hi Livebythemoon,

Thanks for the welcome. You were dead on. The email was sent from AIDSMEDS with the subject being: You have a new personal message.

Sorry to bother everyone with this. This is such a new site for me, it will take me a few days to get in the swing of things.

Thanks again.
