hello, can some one sort of give me some guidance?
« on: May 10, 2007, 01:39:51 pm »
 :-\

I am a gay male, and I always have sex protected.... whenver anal sex is involved I always play the top and wear a condom, however a week and a half ago I was the insertive top and the condom broke and I was inside the guy for over 7 to 10 minutes.

When I pulled out is when I realized the condom had broken.

what scared me the most is that the guy felt very conmfortable with that fact and he didnt bother at all.... me on the other hand went home almost crying.

I didnt receive PEP or anything, however a week later I got a phone call from the guy inviting to go over to his place, over there I played the investigator and looked for medicine or some sort of indication that he was HIV positive but I didnt find anything other than allergy medications and eye drops.

I decided to be confronting and asked him if he was HIV pos or not, he told me he honestly has never been tested for HIV and that he has been with over 15 to 20 guys in his whole life, he is mostly the bottom and he assures me that he always wears condoms except with me and another guy who he used to have sex like 10 years ago....  he told me he would get tested now that I kind made him nervous and he would share his result with me.

From my judgement he seemed 100% honest in his statement.

Assesing my risks my doctor told me that it's very hard for me to come out positive outta this episode because of several reasons.

1. I was a top
2. it';s a one time encounter
3. going by what the guy told me, chances are he is most likely negative himself

it's been a week and a half and the only symptoms I have it's a swollen lymph node on the left side of my neck and some pinching under my armpits and behind my knees.... perhaps is stress and anxiety?

no diarreah, no fever, no rashes so far.

thank you for your time and replies.

future,

Don't start symptom hunting, because symptoms or even the lack of symptoms means nothing where hiv is concerned. Only testing at the appropriate time will reliably reveal your hiv status.

You have had a risk, but as you wore a condom and were protected for at least some of the time, the odds are definitely in your favour of coming out of this ok, regardless of your partner's hiv status. However, it is a level of risk worth testing over. If you've never been tested yourself, you should do anyway.

Only a test at three months past this encounter will be conclusive. However, the vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days. A negative test at six weeks is not likely to change, but must be confirmed at the three month point.

Please read through all three condom and lube links in my signature line. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

I expect you to come out of this A-ok.

Thank you ann... I've managed to calm myself down a lot and I am not thinking about it as much because I think the chances of me catching HIV are slim especially since I dont know if the guy is HIV pos, most likely he isnt....

what freaks me out is my lymph nodes getting swollen  :-\

Swollen lymph nodes are absolutely not an HIV specific occurence. They happen for lots of reasons. And by the way, cease and desist if you have been squeezing, pressing or otherwise bothering your nodes. You can create a serious prohlem by doing that.

The odds are in your favor that you're going to test negative. HIV is not easy to transmit and you're talking about a single incident.

Stay productively busy and the waiting time until you get tested will pass more quickly than you may imagine possible.

Good luck on your test.

Cheers,

The guy hasnt gotten back to me with results of anything but at least I feel sure that he isnt hiv pos and chances are he isnt since he seemed pretty honest about him wearing condoms.

ufff this is hard lesson from life.....

I am on my 2 weeks and a half!!

It IS a hard experience. Just keep using a condom everytime and stay productively busy while you're waiting to get tested. It really helps the time to go faster.

The odds are way in your favor so at the end of the day I expect you to come out of this ok.

Keep us posted on your result.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
