Graetful for feedback
« on: February 15, 2009, 11:11:43 pm »
hello
slightly more than 4 weeks ago i had unprotected penetration with a woman who may or may not be hiv+. i have no idea her status.
i had some symptoms during this time, but no fever, diarrrhoea or rashes.

i just got a blood test done at 4 weeks - it showed no antibodies, completely negative and i heard that at 4 weeks its a 99% you will show if infected.

awaiting results of pcr blood test in next few days. All the other paramterers in my blood meantime showed up completely normal.

What are my chances? I am beyond myself with worry and on pills for the anxiety.

Appreciate any advice.
Thanks and god bless

Your 3 month test result will be conclusive. Next time use a condom.

Silverman, the ONLY test which can be depended upon for a reliable result regarding your HIV status is an HIV test. The PCR was never intended for diagnositc purposes and because of its high sensitivity can sometimes yield a false positive.

HIV is a fragile virus. It's significantly harder to transmit from female to male as opposed to the other way around. Given this was a single possible exposure the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor that you will test negative. No result is final until you test at 13 weeks after the most recent risky incident.

You do need to learn from this experience. You can have vaginal and anal intercourse with anyone, regardless of their HIV status. But you  need to do it the safer way which means always without exception using a latex condom. That way you will be well protected against transmission.

Good luck with your test. The odds are in your favor that you'll come out of this ok.

Andy thank you for your response.

The PCR came back negative today and my potential exposure was over 30 days ago now. I understand that the virus becomes active in the system from 1st day and is then detectable within 10 days by pcr - although the pcr is not a mainstream diagnostic test in that it does not detect antibodies it is nonetheless a detector for the virus.

I have however got herpes which i could attribute some of my symptoms to.

im assuming that i am almost now clear of the mire but will get retested at 3 months to be 100 pc sure and will not be taking any more misadventures ever again.
Apologies!

Well, a negative test result is always a happy thing. The odds are that you are going to continue to test negative.

It's very good that you're now aware of what you need to do in order to protect your health in the future. Use condoms. Everytime.

Cheers.

just had a 6 week negative blood test (i guess it must be the antibody one) 2 weeks ago, only another 5 weeks to wait until i can get the final one for the (hopefully) all clear.

I wish there was some way to clearly warn people of the anguish that they will go through by putting themselves in risky situations.Even if I do remain negative this has changed me for life.

Good. You've collected another important negative result which bodes well for your final test at 13 weeks.

It's been a difficult experience for you to go through, but if it wakes you up to always without exception using condoms, then you will have learned a very valuable lesson from this.

Cheers.
