On this day in 1984...
« on: April 23, 2007, 05:00:56 pm »
On 23rd April 1984 the virus behind AIDS was discovered - I saw this article on the BBC news website.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/april/23/newsid_2524000/2524039.stm

The hubris back then was incredible. No wonder doctors today hedge every prediction - they don't want to look like idiots. Mind you, that didn't stop The Lancet splashing "CURE" all over the cover when that valproic acid study was published.

Sad anniversary.

Let's wish HIV a very happy birthday.

We could bake it a cake.  With rat poison in it.

I recall what I was doing that week too.
I was still trying to be str8. But I was buying "gay pied" which was a gay mag. My mother had lost her best friend to cancer and was getting help from a friend when I came home. The mag was under my shirt. My mum was crying. I forgot I had the mag under my shirt and it fell. My mum didn't see it but the friend did. He said "oh ?" i said "yes". He never disclosed.

I was kinda joking.  I had sex with girls when I was younger... though I'll add I met them in gay bars.  I figured if they were sleeping with men in gay bars they were more fucked up in the head than I was.

In 1981 a full entire 3 years before the scientists knew, my friend at the time who was a gay genius, he had a MD, a PhD and was going for a Vet degree too, he knew that the disease that was killing gays was caused by a retrovirus, and he said this to me, and that it was sexually transmitted, he was 28 years old at the time going to USdavis studying for his Vet degree, he was probably one of a handfull on the planet that knew the science, or guessed the science behind it

he said, the symptoms are just like a feline syndrome we get with cats, a wasting syndrom caused by a retrovirus

his mom and dad were both MDs in so calif., he was a gorgeous rower

he looked younger than his age, very soft spoken

graduated from university at 16 years old or 17 i forget

...my friend at the time who was a gay genius....

Does anybody else find themselves giggling at "gay genius"?  :D Was his name Doogie Hauser by any chance?

Maybe not. But I now know what I want put on my tombstone. All I have to do now is justify it - the genius part anyway. I think I'm probably overqualified for the "gay" - queer as a steam-driven doughnut...
