yeah they sent it to at least 9 members judging by the names on the cc list of the PM.

no point even trying to talk to scum like that, they will probably never be back and only joined to spam us with that fith.

I got this PM crap porno as well and don't want to have to deal with it on this site.  It wasn't even hot, for cripe sake.  I tried to
report the PM to Admin., but it bounced back with message "Hacker attempt."  WTF???  I PM'ed Ann about it separately.

Guys it's just a photoshopped picture of a willy. We've all seen peenies before I'm sure. I believe that Ann has dealt with the offender. I'm confident the error message relating to the report to Moderator function will be passed on to Peter and fixed up.

As spam PM's go it was rather a good one. At least we got a sample of the merchandise on offer. ;)

Hi guys,
I got a PM from "Harrison Ford" this morning also.
I didn't get a picture of anything with mine. I got a nasty subject line and a few different links to other sites. Of course I didn't try to go to these sites. I was afraid of getting a virus on my computer.
Anyway, it's ok now. I PM'd Ann about it and now I don't feel so insulted since others got this also. I thought somebody just really had something against me for some reason.

Hi everyone, i too received the nice little pic from our good friend Harrison Ford, lol I too tried to send a message and it came back as being hacked. I did pm Ann and then came on here. LOL now if i had just came on here and see that it has been taken care of i wouldn't be feeling so dumb right now.I too hope this doesn't start happening a lot on here. This site means too much for too many of us for people to spoil it for us.

Okay, I am not so naive as to be unaware that this kind of thing happens online, only I just don't like the idea of having to shut down my PM box for fear of finding unwanted garbage in it.

Hey gang -- we're looking into it.  This spammer has an email:  donald92135@yahoo.com (don't send him an email, or he'll have yours!), but if you google his email, you'll see he's spammed many forums, and knows some sort of security weakness in the forums software we use.

However, we're pretty sure we've effectively banned him for now (using his IP address, and the multiple email addresses he's used to spam other sites), so it shouldn't happen again (from him at least). 

Question -- did everyone just recieve a PM in the forums, or an email notification with a link to the PM as well?  Please reply here if you got an automated EMAIL with the subject line "New Personal Message: WHAT'S UP MOTHER******!!!"  We know everyone got the PM, but want to know who got the EMAIL as well (a much worse security breach).

I got the email notifying me that I had a PM on the system.   :-\  I got all excited thinking some cute guy wanted to court me!  lol

I did check out the SMF forum and found some discussion on the subject of PM SPAM.  Looks like it has been brought up and then forgotten, so I started a new thread.   ;D

Maybe if I don't let the subject die, it will not be forgotten and some measures will be implemented to thwart this type of thing.

Anyway, back to waiting for my night in shinning Armour.   :-*

I got it also.  NEVER CLICK ON A LINK IN AN UNKNOWN EMAIL!!!!!

That's a good way to end up with something bad on your computer.  Could possibly launch an offscreen window to monitor keystrokes.  I use a Mozilla browser because windows can't be positioned out of view.  I've sometimes caught a small window lurking in the corner of my screen and immediately close it.

Okay -- we're figuring this out.  It wasn't a "security breach," like I thought previously.  It's just an aggressive spammer using our PM system.  The spammer created an account, then selected random usernames, picking the maximum 10 at a time.  He only sent it to about 50 folks.  Most users in the forums have their profiles set to receive an email notification when they get a PM.  You can turn this off in your Profile's "Personal Message Options" section -- you'll see "Notify by email every time you receive a personal message: _______" on this page, and you'll have a couple of options there to turn this feature on or off.

Rest assured, the spammer never obtained anyone's email address -- they just used the forums to send you an automated email.

So how do we fix this?  We can try a few things.  We've blocked this spammer from being able to visit the site, but we'll need to make sure this doesn't happen again by others.  We might decide to disable email notifications for PMs.  There isn't an admin option for this, so we'll have to edit the underlying software.

But this won't solve the PM spam issue.  I've lowered the threshold of how many users a PM can be sent to, so now the limit is 5 instead of 10.  We'll explore other options as well.

I've deleted all the PMs from our spammer -- you might still see the PM, but it's subject line and content have been deleted.

Out of curiosity the picture wasn't one of those aggresive JPG exploits that have been going around the net was it? I was reading up about them causing a lot of problems, with just the perverted porn picture starting all kinds of executable files on your system.

Maybe the message board software protects that though.

Yeah, this happened the other day and when I brought it up I was told "it's a free country."  Of course, message boards have all sorts of rules and most enforce not resurrecting a zombie thread -- I wish someone would assert some such authority here.

And you know what, if they don't want a rule like that then starting in 2 weeks I plan to resurrect one zombie thread every 3 hours.

Perhaps if the "reply on..." date was the same font as the subject line, we'd be better able to read the year it was posted. I mean, it is July, just 2008 now instead of 2006. If someone was doing a search for "porno" I can see how they might think that last post in 2006 was recent.
