Bye bye Eric Cantor
« on: June 10, 2014, 08:26:06 pm »
Eric Cantor has lost the Republican primary to Tea Partier David Brat!!
Monumental upset........

I do not like Brat, but maybe a Democrat can win this seat and give me a US Rep that I agree with on most things!!

I can't find the link - but there was an op-ed piece by "Cooter", the former star of the Dukes of Hazard and former Congressman, imploring the independents and Democrats to cross over and get rid of this smuk in the Primary election.

Bye Felicia!!!

This could not have happened to a nastier House majority leader than Cantor.

I hope he is just the first to fall and certainly not the last.

I never understood how Cantor made such a quick rise in 13 years in the first place.

From what I'm reading he lost because of the immigration issue -- you must live in a really welcoming, diverse district, bicker.

This would be like the left kicking out Nancy Pelosi and replacing her with a hippie. Far from celebrating that Cantor was defeated one should sit in horror as the Republican Party is slowly taken over by people even further to the right than the more right wing politicians even in Congress.

Two main reasons he lost - IMO.

1.  Utter arrogance.  He refused to debate Brat, barely campaigned in person - he thought he was unbeatable in the district that he helped to craft.

2.  Open primary - dems and independents could come vote and many, I think, did (including yours truly)

Another bit may have been his last campaign ad -- where he calls David Brat, who is even farther right than Cantor, "Liberal college professor David Brat......"  It was so preposterous that it may have backfired.

Oh Mitch -- Brat is an Economics professor and Randolph Macon college.

Of course, now...... we need a Democratic candidate -- I don't think there is one and if there is, he/she is keeping a VERY low profile.  I do think a candidate will be coughed up from somewhere now.  David Brat is a more beatable general election candidate then Cantor ever was.

Looking at a map of the 7th Virginia congressional district I can faithfully say you will never elect a Democrat there, as it is currently drawn.

btw, the Democrat that Brat will face is also a professor AT THE SAME COLLEGE. Hilarious.

Oh -- an uphill battle for certain, but if a Democrat would win, it would need to be against an extreme candidate and Brat has some pretty extreme stances.

Plus -- NO ONE thought Cantor could lose and he lost big......  not exactly the same thing, but surprises can happen.  Tea Party candidates have given elections to Democrats across the country -- need I remind you of the infamous "I am not a witch."  and Harry Reid was supposed to be an easy pick up for Repubs in his last election, but the Tea Party rode to his rescue......

Plus -- Mark Warner is up for reelection this year and he is, arguably, the most popular politician in Virginia -- his coattails may help here........

We will see --
