Has anyone heard of an Asian Violet known as Viola Yedoensis it contains tiny protiens that appear to kill off infected cells

If only....I would not be surprised that one day a cure or great treatment would be found in a plant, but I have not heard of this. I did a quick reserach and found this:

Sydney, (ANI): Scientists from Australia, Europe and the US have found that a Chinese herb, which has been used to treat snakebites and boils for centuries, has the potential to fight HIV/AIDS. The researchers say that an Asian violet known as Viola Yedoensis contains tiny proteins that appear to kill off infected cells. Such anti-HIV and anti-bacterial qualities, say the researchers, make the plant a target for new drug therapies to treat the HIV virus. While presenting their findings at COMBIO 2007, a meeting of biochemistry and molecular biology specialists in Sydney, researchers at the University of Queensland said that the plant contains small proteins called cyclotides that might act as defensive agents.

The researchers say that an Asian violet known as Viola yedoensis contains tiny proteins that appear to kill off infected cells.The researchers tested the ability of the cyclotides by applying them to two sets of cells—one infected with HIV and the other virus-free. Their aim was to see how many of the cells infected with HIV were destroyed after the application of the cyclotides. "The results were encouraging. The actions of the cyclotides are yet not fully understood and the research is at a very early stage,” said new.com.au quoted Professor David Craik from the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland as saying.

Of interest is whether this Combio conference is bona-fide, or just a quack-fest...does not seem to be the latter, seems genuine, although more research is in order. J.

p.p.s. Okay seems this conference is the real deal...not to say that this discovery will pan out- it's always possible, of course- but at least the conference is comprised of bona-fide scientists. The corresponding methanol extract also showed inhibitory activity but not as high as the dimethylsulfoxide extract. Anti-HIV activity in the extracts is accompanied by cytotoxicity, and we describe here the separation of the cytotoxic material from the active fraction. We also describe the procedure for isolation, purification, and separation of the active component from crude extracts of V. yedoensis as well as details of its activity against HIV-1. The UV-visible, infrared (IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data and certain other characteristics of the active compound are also presented. Initial chemical tests and the proton NMR and IR spectra indicate a high molecular weight sulphonated carbohydrate polymer, and chromatographic evidence suggests an MW between 10,000 and 15,000.

There are new studies from 2006 and 2007 that are more interesting.

Clinical Observation on ZY-1 in Treating 52 HIV-Infected Patients

Objective: To assess efficacy of ZY-1,a Chinese medicinal herbs recipe.

Methods: 52 HIV-infected patients (including 19 AC, 9 ARC, 24 AIDS). ZY-1 is a comp. Chinese herbal recipe, consisted of Astragalus membranaceus, Viola yedoensis etc, indicated for early and middle stage pts, taken 10g, 3/d. ELISA and/or WB were done, and lympho. subsets were measured before and after treatment. Fatigue, fever, cough, diarrhea, anorexia, lymphadenopathy, skin rash were displayed. T4CC was 246.21/mm3, T4/T8 was 0.43 in average.

Results: After treatment, most symptoms alleviated, immune function improved in 14 pts, unchanged in 16 pts, sum 30 pts (57.7%). Total eff. rate 51.9%. 1 pt showed seroreversion after taken 3 mths of ZY-1, whose immune function was high. SIV monkey model also showed better results with immune and pathol. improvements than that of AZT and NS control.

Conclusions: ZY-1 is effective both clinically, immunologically and serologically.

Yes Dr. Kang's vaccine, I too have great hopes for that one. I am anxiously awating for the trials to begin, let's see if in 2008.

when i heard about this new thing it sounded great, i have even been carrying around the words

on a piece of paper for a month trying to get time to go buy the stuff at a chinese herb store, i even went in a few places and one said i needed an Rx from a chinese doctor which is obviously a huge lie because it could open the chinese herb dr. to practicing medicine in usa without license  ... correct

but anyway

i am very hopeful about this...

i was very very excited at first but then when i saw that it was first reported in 1988 then i was like oh well they knew and it wont help to take the herb much

but that is why i posted it that way

but the active ingredient with all the modern 3d molecular modelling could come up with some great thing based on this herb

so please dont jump on me

all i am saying is that it was reported along time ago...
