Oh the glorious flatulence!
« on: February 15, 2009, 05:58:08 pm »
Hi all,

I was diagnosed back in October and since then have had on and off bouts of pretty stinky flatulence (my partner and my dog get quite upset with me).  I am not taking meds yet and am interested in feedback from other members who aren't on meds or people who remember before they want on meds .  Is this quite common?  Is there anything that you do that helps?  I should say that I eat a pretty balanced diet (lots of veggies, fruit, fish, nuts, whole grains, etc) and continue to avoid the things that gave me gas before I was diagnosed (milk, yogurt, protein shakes).  Also as of my testing in January there are no other STDs that might come into play.  Any thoughts would be a huge help...  my partner and dog will thank you :)

You say plenty of fruits and veggies.  Apples give me the most appalling gas.  Some fruit sugars can do that.  Try skipping the fruits for a few days and see what happens.  If the gas stops, start adding back the fruits one by one over the weeks until you find which one gives you gas.  Worked for me.

Get your stool tested for parasites.  They are the ones that causes the stinky smell.  If it is parasites, the doctor can give you antibiotics to kill them and return your digestive track to normal.  I had parasites, the doctor gave me antibiotics, and now there is no loose stool and the smell is minimal.  I hope this helps?

Hi
As a Long Term Non Progressor, I have been HIV positive for 20 years and never taken meds.  But I have had my share of problems which included flatulence due to chronic acid reflux and stomach problems.  I take Nexium and as soon as I started taking this medication my flatulence stopped.
You will get a variety of answers as to why and what is going on with flatulence but its up to you to sort this out with your doctor.
Good luck to you!

Hi Wild,

You might want to add the yogurt back into your diet. Yogurt that has active cultures is very good for your intestines and just might help. You might also want to try one of the many pro-biotic drinks available. Good luck!

Hi all,

Thanks for all the great advice.  I realized that the fish oil supplements I am taking seems to be contributing to my problem so I've cut back on that and it has helped.  It's hard to tell sometimes what's the HIV and what's just normal life stuff (or what's both!).

Best

I take fish oil supplements too.  For the past several days my gas has been so rank that it's as if 1000 dead people exited my ass lips.

Unfortunately it is one of those not so nice side effects which some of us have to live with, I say let it go and don't worry yourself about it. Life is too short.  ;D
