Wedding Bells and HIV
« on: May 28, 2014, 09:04:57 pm »
So I don't know why this didn't cross our minds before, but when my partner and I went down to get our marriage license (finally Pennsylvania!) they ask if either of us had any transmittable diseases.

Caught me off guard, but it seems the point was just to capture the data point in their system and presumably make sure my future spouse was aware.

Talk about officially documenting disclosure!

lol, don't worry, they do it to straights too. some states require confirmation, not just your word. remember, marriage isn't just a covenant before god, its a legally binding contract

Not worried now, but what really caught me off guard at the time was the fact that it was in a crouded room with a line of couples behind us and reporters taking pictures and hanging on every word of each gay couple coming through hoping for stories for the paper.

This is something I hadn't considered either.  Do states still do blood tests for marriage licenses?  Were those to see if you were related or for diseases?  I cannot even remember.  Never being married, I never looked into that anyway.  I would just hear people say they had to do a blood test.

Asking that question in public would have made me uncomfortable-- especially with media there.  I suppose on a normal day, there aren't many people in the room and that's probably a question many answer on a form and not asked out loud??

Congratulation on your impending nuptials, Pittman! :)

When I got married in 1984 in NYC, we both had to have a syphilis blood test at a state-certified lab, and we had to include the result sheets as proof with our license application.

If I recall correctly (and I may not), we had the test done in the same building in a little room in the basement. It was a little room in a basement somewhere, anyway. But egads, that was thirty years ago (this coming November) and sometimes I have trouble remembering what I freakin-well did yesterday.

Tests for hiv antibodies weren't licensed until the following year, but I don't know if they ever became a requirement for a marriage licence.

BTW.... once married, twice shy. ;) ;D

That's the weird part. There was an online form that we completed. But when we got in, they pulled it up and then proceeded to ask yet more questions that were only on their version of the form.

The other odd thing. . . I am totally not the romantic type, but I could not help but feel silly happy all of a sudden while we were sitting there.  ;D

To top it off, all my straight, middle aged, republican coworkers want to take me out for a boys night to celebrate. The times have certainly changed!

No matter what people say there is SOMETHING about actually getting married that is so very impactful.  Sid and I had been together for 22 yrs when we got married, I figured it would be no big deal.  When we walked into the room of 50 family and friends, I instantly started to cry.  I continued on the edge of tears for the entire time -- barely being audible when I said my vows.  I am not someone prone to tears, but this event really was just so overwhelming.......

Congrats -- enjoy!

Thanks!  No, it was Pittsburgh, the other PA city. ;-)
