Just diagnosed and Drug resistant

I was diagnosed less than a month ago and had had some tests done. My CD4 count was 390 and was told my VL load results will come after a week. I went today and i have been told my VL is ok but i have to start treatment in the next 2weeks because i have a drug resistant strain to some medication and will never take the 1 tablet which currently my husband takes. i will have to take a combination of 3 types( which i do not remember the names as i was in shock). I am devastated as i was only hoping on taking what my husband is taking which is Atripla. Does anyone know if my medication will change later to just one or i may have to take these 7 tablets a day for the rest of my life. the Doctor plainly told me i will never take the 1.

It's really not all that unusual to have resistance issues like you are finding upon diagnosis. You shouldn't be "devastated". So you have to take a few more pills -- it's not like this one-pill-a-day regimen has always been available. Plus there are more one-pill-a-day choices coming out soon, and in fact one was just approved last month (Complera, so not sure why your doctor hasn't considered that though I don't have your resistance information in front of my face like your doctor does, but it's still worth asking him about). Gilead will have two more one-pill-a-day choices in 2012, so even if you go on a handful of pills this year there's nothing that says your stuck with that the rest of your life.

Thanks for the advice. it was just a bit of a shock when she said 'never'. i will ask her when i see her again
