The blending is Guerrilla Queer Bar DC, a social experiment bordering on activism that Jones, Trott and "the lesbian of the group," Amy Mulry, host.
Through a network of Internet profiles on Myspace, Friendster and Yahoo, they sound the call to gays and lesbians around the city and descend on a straight bar, on the third Friday of every month.
Tired of being limited to a few dozen gay bars, and Mulry points out, just two lesbian bars in the city, the group began seeking out straight bars three years ago. The trio began with an e-mail list of around 200; it's now approaching 2,000.
"When you're the only gay person, people tend to engage on that level, like 'Oh, I have a gay friend.' That's what defines you," Jones said. "If there are 20 gay people, then all of a sudden the conversation changes and it becomes about you being a person who has other qualities."

As a tee-totaler non-smoker I don't go into gay bars for more than 10 minutes and I ain't been in a straight bar since the Dandy Warhols played in one in the late 90s.

I've gone to many of the events sponsored by the Austin "guerilla bar" group.
I'm not a huge fan of bars. But what I enjoy about this is the opportunity to
go someplace I may never have been before, and not feeling limited about
where I can go to socialize with other gay folks.

On a historical note, in QUEER NATION's 1990 days, that was a regular tactic on the agenda. A number of historically straight bars were invaded for an evening. Sometimes it happened because there had been a report of some anti-gay stuff. In other cases it was just a part of QN's committment to raising queer visibility in non-traditional settings.
Two historic bars, the White Horse Tavern in the West Village and McSorley's in East Village were among the targets which were very enjoyably rainbowed. Some supposedly straight Upper East Side watering holes were also visited en masse.
As I recall, once things got started at any particular site it wasn't always easy to tell the invaders apart from the invaded, if you get my drift.

I googled the word "Aghast" and used the picture I thought expressed the emotion that I wanted. Had no idea it was of 9/11.

If the pic had the WTC in it I might have been offended, too, but it didn't. AC made no reference to 9/11 but someone else did. A pic taken completely out of context and placed in a thread like this is no insult to those who died or their loved ones.
9/11 is still somewhat fresh in the USA's collective psyche and the enormity of that day will never be forgotten. AC was in no way joking about 9/11. If he'd been able to find a pic of people reacting to the Hindenburg explosion it wouldn't be any more offensive than the pic used.
That is my humble opinion.

I go to straight bars all the time... standard operating procedure for me, really.
I loathe most of the gay bars in Richmond.
And the straight bars I go to are filled with scruffy bike kids and tattooed hardcore music fans... and they don't ever treat me like I'm "the gay guy."
If this were done where I go... no one would know the difference. Because it happens all the time without any organization.
I prefer social fluidity and look forward to the day when tactics like this are obsolete.

I was simply stating that the pic offended me. I think I said I was offended. Not that the photo was offensive. I think print is just like words...but more powerful because its there to be seen. As someone who lost a few people in those attacks as well as the ongoing war...it was a cruel reminder of 9/11. The thread also used the word INVADING....much like we were in the attacks. It was just me having a sensitive spot. And the pic, unbeknowst to the poster coupled with the thread was a bit much. Nor was the fact that I posted my comment after someone mentioned that it was a 9/11 photo. I do not in anyway expect everyone to know every photo from that horrific event. Nor did I intend to feel like I was wrong for making my post because of the reasons why it was an acceptable photo. And lastly I was not attacking the original post...more just asking a qeustion of why post that pic...which was answered by the poster. I wonder now what was posted with the pic....when located. Maybe a reference to 9/11. And if so....heartlessness and lack of consideration of those affected by the tragedy. Just my two cents. i know its only two...but I feel its worth a million.

Well, being that I was just looking for a picture of people who were "aghast" I wasnt really looking to research the photo. All I wanted was the emotion. And if it continues to offend I invite you to put me on ignore as I probably will have a tendancy to do that to you. Which is not a slam or anything I totally get that I rub some people the wrong way, it may just be that you are one of them. Which is ok.

i've googled images and used them before without having a clue where they originated, and I sort of assumed that was what AC had done.

I remember once I was offended by a comedian who was making fun of AIDS and i found to the be utterly disgusting but the rest of the crowd was having the time of their lives. Maybe the person who posted the picture should consider that.

No offense meant bt, but I think you will find that many folk on here will beg to differ on that score.
Laughing in the face of adversity can often be an incredible coping mechanism. There are many on here - myself included - who frequently find laughter the best therapy when faced with the most daunting and/or desperate situations.
Aidsmeds is an incredible mix of personalities and there are some folk here with amazing souls and huge hearts. More often than not, they know when its time for tears and when its time for laughter. Sometimes its time for both.
You only have to browse through Living With to see that...and be sure to go beyond the first page!
