Glasses
« on: June 05, 2006, 05:43:27 pm »
I for one hate wearing eyeglasses!  I think I'm farsighted so I wear extremely thick coke bottle type glasses that magnify my eyes.  Before PML I used to wear gas permeable hard contacts.  I stopped wearing them more for the fact that I was having a hard time putting them in and taking them out then because of my vision problems.  Heck I have no peripheral vision to my left either way glasses or contacts. So 3 days ago I decided to try my contacts again.  Amazingly I had very little problems putting them in or taking them out so day one I wore them for maybe 15 minutes day to maybe 30 minutes and today I've had them on for several hours now.  I'm hooked again :) now I just need a new prescription.  Don't know if I should see a specialist for an eye exam or just an optometrist.  Guess that something I need to ask my doctor when I see her on Wednesday.  Gas permeable are so much easier than soft contacts they are smaller and don't turn over and they popout easier with just a little tug at the corner of the eyelid.

I hate glasses too, Jeff.   Mine are 'progressives', and I am always doing a bob and weave to find the right spot to look out of.

Lately, I have been wearing one contact lens, in my right eye.   If I put in both lens, I cannot read anything.   I refuse to wear contacts AND glasses.

If I had the money, I would have Lasik.

i used to wear contacts, but realized they were quite a pain after a night out of drinking trying to take them out or remember to take them out.

That was a long time ago, and I know they have ones you can leave in.   I do have a pair of regular glasses, but i don't wear them much either.

I have glasses too, I can see close up, but distance is all fuzzy.  I wear contacts mostly, and wont be seen dead in my glasses.  Im a bit vain when it comes to them even though they are small framed and discreet looking things, I just can't handle them.. I even hate wearing sun glasses.

Hello Jeff,

Most likely you are farsighted. On farsighted people glasses make the eyes look larger, on nearsighted, just the opposite,

Optometrist is the one that would write the prescption for the contacts. If you are having problem with your periferal vision, you need to see an ophthalmologist, and find out whats going onwith that, before any prescription is written.

I also wear the progressives glasses, and have worn contact lenses. They are coming a long way in contact lenses to make them more comfortable, for the eyes.

You guys are missing out on enjoying eyeglasses. They're very attractive on a lot of people.

As long as you need 'em, get with the program and enjoy them. I'm really getting to like the black horn rims that I used to think were nerdy. And some of the other colors I'm seeing lately are great.

I have both, contacts and glasses.

I loved my tortoise shell school marm ones, and then I left them on a plane....*sigh*.  Now I have the invisible ones, but I miss the bold statement.  However, I wear contacts 90% of the time.

I looked into lasik, however there is a small chance of a halo effect, or a loss of borders and edges.  They cannot predict who gets this...but for me, that's a career ender...so no go.  Just a warning to those thinking about it...its very safe and all that, and those complications are rare, but it does happen.  Night vision can be an issue for some too.

I miss my nerd glasses.

I wear contacts and have a bad habit of forgetting to take them out like I should.  When the major diabetes attack hit me last November, it became necessary for me to wear reading glasses also.  I hate that.  This getting old sucks.

I'm supposed to wear them...hell I wear one contact most of the time, because it's cheaper and lets the box last longer.  The passenger in the car is there to read the road signs.  Once I start working after college it's Lasik all the way.

I kinda like my contacts because I can see very clearly with them....and I always forget that I have contacts on unless they get dry in my eyes.  If you hate glasses or contacts, you might want to consider laser eye treatment.  I have friends who have been through the process and they have no regrets.

My hubby Had lasik several years ago and besides a minor problem during the procedure it went well and he doesn't miss his glasses or contacts one bit!  My step father being an optometrist(retired) speaks highly of Lasik.  Two of my step brothers at the procedure over 10 years ago and they've had no problems over the years.  I would have done it but I would've had to wear my glasses for three to four weeks prior to Lasik and at the time I rarely wore glasses and many friends didn't even know I had glasses until this past year and PML.

I had 20/10 vision for over 40 years.  When I was diagnosed I went through a 2 1/2 hour exam front and back and it was determined that my vision is now 20/15.  Problem is that I can't read a damn word a foot in front of my face. I use glasses to read only.  I have been an avid reader, so I guess I can expect it.

Not sure if I would ever get used to having to wear them on a regular basis.

HA! that's hilarious

Once I start working after college it's Lasik all the way.

I guess I was misinformed. I heard someone once mention Lasik was not recommended for hiv+ people

I got a pair last year and hate 'em.  I never wear them even though I really should.  Bad thing is, even with them on after reading for about 15 min or so my vision will still start to blur.  Makes it difficult to do something I used to really enjoy.

I've worn glasses since I was 6. I wore contacts from about 1972 until the late 90s, when my astigmatism became so bad regular contacts just won't do.

I tried the toric lenses, which are weighted to correct for the astigmatism. After about an hour, I am in misery. Runny, watery eyes, red, bloodshot. I look like I've been on a three-week drunk.

Today, I proudly wear my glasses (wire rimmed, tortoise shell design) which are bifocals (progressives) and are transition lenses (darken in the sunlight.)

I can see a total of about 3 inches without them, which makes getting intimate more fun!  ;)

I like them, I can see, which is why I have them, and they kinda hide the lipo in my face.

I just wish they didn't cost $600.  :o

HUGS,

Mark

I just recently started wearing glasses, used to just need them to read, now they are bifocals (no line of course!) I don't mind wearing them at all, don't really need to wear them around the house unless I'm reading. Having a hard time adjusting to the bifocals, not sure were to look through to read sometimes! My glasses are pretty small, got them just big enough so they could get the bifocal in.

Aarrgghh!

Glasses drive me batty too. I don't usually put them on until I go out of the house or want to watch telly. I don't need them for seeing the computer monitor or for reading. There is NO WAY I could drive without them - co-pilot or no co-pilot! When I first went to college I refused to wear my glasses (vainity) but I kept getting lost on campus, admitted defeat and started wearing them. Couldn't afford contacts back then, and can't now either.

Here's what really drives me 'round the twist - if I'm wearing my glasses, these days I have to take them OFF to read. Didn't used to have to do that! I have a pair of vari-focals but the bit of clear glass I'm supposed to read through is so tiny I have to move my head from side to side. It's ok for checking the paper to see what time my program is on telly, but for sitting down and reading anything longer I have to take them off. I end up keeping them on top of my head a lot of the time and sometimes spend ages looking for them... while they're on my head. ~sigh~

Oh, and in the past six months I find that I can no longer read fine print with or without my glasses. I had to buy a cheap pair of over-the-counter reading specs for anything that needs close inspection... like small print or a splinter in my paw.

Old age indeed. :D

I loved my contacts - especially when I was working on the fishing boats. Nothing worse than getting sea spray on yer specs. If I could afford them now I'd have them in a heartbeat. Shit, I can't even afford new glasses right now and I think I do need a new perscription. But laser surgery? ~shudder~ on my EYES? ~shudder~ No thanks!
