http://www.tampabay.com/news/weather/hurricanes/tropical-storm-isaac-becomes-a-concern-for-rnc/1246926

The prospect of a hurricane bearing down on next week's Republican National Convention became a genuine concern Tuesday as Tropical Storm Isaac formed in the Atlantic Ocean and loomed as a threat to Florida.

Expected to become a hurricane within two days, Isaac could be at or near Cuba by Sunday. From there, several forecasters expect it to head north....

So, in addition to the "wind" being blown from these politicians - and what ever else will be being blown during the RNC, we now add to the mix Isaac.

Only thing we need now are pictures of a naked royal...... ooops, already got that.

This will be a baby hurricane ---- Damn it! :'(

Gov Scott withdraws from activities:  :P

Protestors vow to protest rain or shine :    ;D ;D

http://www.baynews9.com/content/news/baynews9/news/article.html/content/news/articles/ap/2012/08/24/RNC_demonstrators_vow_to_protest_rain_or_shine.html

Just as Republicans are preparing for their convention next week, so are the protesters.

And just like the Republicans are making contingency plans in case Tropical Storm Isaac brings heavy rain and wind to Tampa, the protesters are making plans of their own.

On Friday, a small group of demonstrators at an encampment west of downtown said the rain might curtail their numbers and the ability to carry giant, papier-mache political puppets, large signs and other props. All are virtually guaranteed to fall apart in the rain and wind that is expected to hit Tampa on Monday, the first day of the convention.

However, that doesn't mean Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan won't have crowds of demonstrators outside. Groups including Code Pink, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the AFL-CIO union and Planned Parenthood have already started arriving, regardless of the forecast. And die-hards have vowed to move ahead with their plans, rain or shine.

"We're no longer really considering indoor options. Some regular rain and wind won't stop us. They would have to be unsafe conditions to make us consider changing the plans," said Michael Long, of the Florida Consumer Action Network, which is organizing a protest for Sunday evening as the RNC holds its kickoff party at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

By mid-day Friday, it appeared that Isaac was tracking away from Florida's west coast and the Republican National Convention. It was forecast to pass the lower Florida Keys late Sunday night, then head northwest into the Gulf of Mexico. Meteorologists say that it could make landfall on Tuesday evening somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and southeastern Louisiana — although officials stress that the forecast is still unpredictable and that everyone from political delegates to full-time Gulf Coast residents should be prepared.

Florida officials have activated the state's Emergency Operations Center in response to Isaac. Still, Gov. Rick Scott said the event should proceed as planned.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said a decision was made long ago to hold the presidential nominating roll call on Monday night, rather than later. That had nothing to do with the weather — party leaders wanted "to get all our business done in one shot ... so we can keep plowing ahead on telling the Mitt Romney story" on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, he said.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said law enforcement will have a better grasp on how to deploy resources for the storm by Saturday or Sunday. She said that even if the storm brings only heavy rains to the city, "it may reduce the number of protesters."

"On the upside, it may also cool things down," she said. "The heat is one of our biggest worries."

Delegates will be inside or in air-conditioned shuttles — and most aren't that concerned with the protests.

Storm or no storm, New Hampshire delegate Phyllis Woods said the protests will be a minor distraction at most.

"We are not worried about the protesters," Woods said. "It's not even a blip on the radar screen for most of us."

Inclement weather may mean the protesters will be a younger, healthier crowd: Heavy winds, rain and even light street flooding could make things difficult for the elderly and disabled. And as Nathan Pim noted during a puppet-making workshop Friday under sunny skies in Tampa, soaked props could be rendered worthless. Nonetheless, Pim seemed undeterred.

"I could already see there being less people, but I think there's a lot of people who are determined to make a statement," said Pim, who is from Cape Coral, Fla.

Jared Hamil, with the Coalition to March on the RNC, said one of the week's largest planned events will take place on Monday afternoon.

"Rain or shine, we're still going to be there," he said. "The only thing that's going to change is perhaps how we dress. We'll be wearing ponchos and galoshes. We're still going to march."

I love the little red headed prince.   I think he should be the next king after of England.  Just skip Charles and William.  Its always the red heads that are the wild ones, we have to stick together.

If this was happening to the DNC, then for sure it would be god's punishment.

Thanks!

It is actually eerily quiet here right now.... the wind is not blowing at all --- trees are very still; cloudy skies, but no rain; ground is dry.... We will probably get some rain bands in a little bit as the sky has gotten a little bit darker.

We are under Flood Watch, Tornado watch, Rip current warning, Tropical Storm warning, etc.

600 flights cancelled at Miami airport and 135 cancelled at Fort Lauderdale airport...

Work has already been cancelled for tomorrow - schools closed - so, I get an extra day to do school work.

It is a baby hurricane - not really impressed.  :'(

Okay...well that was short-lived....
It is now blowing hard as heck outside - sliding glass doors are rattling and raining so hard I can't even see out the window.....

All within a 5 minute period....

That is the thing about the rain bands - they come in force and then fizzle just as quick as they came.

On the bright side - we only have tornado warnings until 6 pm tonight.

As long as the power doesn't go out, I'm good... right now 4,900 without power in Miami-Dade.

Almost time for tropical storm breakfast.....

Phil,

Nothing going on here yet. It was hotter than hell here yesterday, and we had that typical, milky looking sky that precedes a storm, most of the day yesterday. It's cloudy outside now, but by the time I go into work tonight, the weather should start changing.

Ray - be careful going in to work tonight -
Calm here again.... We probably won't get anything heavy until later this evening.
Stay safe and dry -
Today is a good school work and Corona day -
Getting ready to marinate some steaks for later today and my neighbor is getting ready to make me some breakfast (scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and grits) ---- the one good thing about hurricanes, is that everyone always seems to be cooking and having little get togethers.

Of course, we have some crazy fools out in the ocean surfing....

9,000 now without power in Miami-Dade County
I just got back from a quick run to the store - a bit windy out with gusts up to 55 mph.

We have a strong feeder band getting ready to hit in about 10 minutes....

We have 5 or 6 warnings right now.... Tropical Storm watch/warnings, tornado warnings... the tropical storm force winds stretch out 200 miles from the center of the storm - which is the size of Texas....

Remember that New Orleans did not get a direct hit from Katrina - it was the outer bands/winds that messed up the NoLa...

So, this brother does not have to pimp - having lived in SoFla for 14 years, I'm a little familiar watches, warnings, etc....  ;D

The thing about tropical storm force winds isn't necessarily the strength, but the fact that the winds are continuous - going for 12 to 20 hours along with the continuous rain - thus, the flooding.

Now the rain and wind have stopped.... waiting for the next round.....

I am thinking about opening my home for any Republican Convention speakers who may be stranded  ::)

Perhaps you should put those safety goggles back on .......

Phil never mentioned hurrican watch -- he mentioned Tropical Storm watch/warnings AND tornado warnings -- which I have seen on the Weather Channel.

Must EVERYTHING be a contest with you??

Like I said, the hurricane warning was lifted. I said nothing about the lesser grade tropical storm warning. I don't appreciate being called a liar. :-X ;) :'(

Miss P has a half dozen pricey microbrews in the fridge, and three bottles of red wine. And half full bottles of Basil Hayden and Belvedere. However, I have not had any alcohol now for five months.

It's mostly sunny and 85F in downtown Killadelphia, with showers arriving at 9PM.

ps: 60 klonnies arrive tomorrow, or maybe Tuesday.

As of the NHC 5pm update things really aren't looking very good for New Orleans. And potentially on the same calendar date that Katrina hit.

My brother lives on Orange Beach and his lot is prone to flooding . He has one of those houses on stilts but he is very worried about his man cave underneath the house he just got through building this month .

Your brother could end of with some flooding problems, depending on where this thing goes. Just a very light rain going on, I don't think it will get much worse here:

I'm glad Ray, Ed. Phil and our other buddies in Florida are safe, just now after 9PM EST Sunday, it is headed for area between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama.  Winds will get to 100MPH, pretty bad as the Gulf waters are particularly warm.  Go safe our friends in the gulf.

I don't find that funny at all.  Implying that low income people can be used as barriers against the tropical storm?  That de-values a human life. >:(

As of 12:20 EST this was upgraded officially by the NHC to a category-1 hurricane, it's movement has also stalled to <10 MPH so it will dump huge amounts of rain in one place for 2 days before moving inland.

On another note, drought areas upstream on the Mississippi may finally get substantial rain.

It's from The Onion, so it's satire about how the republican party typically devalues human life.

As for Wump's endorsement....I don't know if that's supposed to be satire or legit.

Yes, apologies,  perhaps I should have made that more clear.
Not to worry, no one is going to line up poor people and use them as a levies. It is a take on Rance's elitist attitude and based very very loosely on what he said about giving people jobs.

So looking like landfall late tonight. Looks like they've closed all airports and Amtrak, and closed the Mississippi River to traffic. Although this is not anything near Katrina, looks like everyone has their eyes on the levies and their new pumps. NO's Mayor says no one will be allowed to shelter at The SuperDome this time. So it's either get out or get to high land.

;)     Not a problem. We won't let the republicans disenfrancise anyone  ;)   I thought that was probably from the Onion.  Seems a better idea is to get a huge supply of "flex seal.  You know.... " rubber in a can" to stop leaks.

It is cool.  A great piece of history.  8)   Be a great time to get those metal detectors out on the beach, you never know what you may find.

When Hurricane Elena sat offshore here in 1985, People found some interesting items. There must have been about 5 to ten feet of sand washed back out into the Gulf, during that Hurricane.

We used to swim at Indian Rocks beach, back then. It has been about 3 years, since the last time, we were there.

http://www.visitflorida.com/Indian_Rocks_Beach

Prior to Elena, it was 3 steps down to the beach, after the storm, it was a ten foot jump onto the beach!   ( but it has been built back up since then. )
