Possible new uk treatment guidelines
« on: March 03, 2008, 03:38:23 pm »
Today i have been to see my doc for treatment for syphillis, was given 28 days supply of vibrox

i then asked her what her feelings for starting treatment early  and would the nhs fund early treatment

it was a simple answer i will recomend treatment when your CD4 drops below 450-500 as new research has found that starting treatment early is beneficial

Aparently a report is due to come out in the uk to support this new finding

Yes and no

There has been much recent data showing less illness and death among people treated with CD4 of 350+ compared to 201-350, and some looking at 350 v 500 as a cut-off point.

I believe the argument on "treat at 350"  is won and will be reflected in the next set of UK guidelines due out this Spring.

As for "treat at 500"? Dunno, more arguable, merit in both sides of the argument.  However, doctors are entitled to draw their own conclusions, many docs in the UK are well read and the data supports a recommendation to treat at 500 or thereabouts if you want to read it that way.

One useful link perhaps (kinda technical)

Start treatment at 500 or 350? UK cohort data show clear difference in risk of death

Hong Kong still tends to follow UK guidelines. I really wonder if local doctors are going to follow. I am still a bit over 350 so I have another 2-3 months at least until my next blood works to have to face this issue and hopefully I still don't need to bring this up (i.e. if my CD4 still above 350). A friend has been as low as 180 and now at mid 200s, and the Hong Kong doctors are still asking her to wait.
