Toto we are not in a Kansas hospital anymore!
This week I went to the hospital for corrective eye surgery and showed up alone as
my husband was at the dentist a few miles away.
The nurse was concerned and wanted to know WHO was going to take me home.
I told her my husband (in Spanish) and she thought my Spanish was really bad meaning wife.
We cleared that up and there was no issue.
Later when I was getting ready for surgery and my husband shows up, the staff immediately brought him
in to say good luck to me and give me a kiss just like we were normal people.
After hearing all the horror stories of how gay couples are treated in the hospitals in the states,
it is nice to know that doesn't happen everywhere in the world.

I have mentioned this in other threads, if anyone needs a medical procedure they cannot afford in the states,
look up the option of coming to Costa Rica.
You can usually find whatever you need medically by googeling the procedure and San Jose Costa Rica.
We have a large house, a guest house, translator and know our way around the medical system pretty well.
Airfare from major cities in the states can be cheap.
We have our house on an international house exchange, so we are accustomed to guests and I have lots of time to help.
(Free house to stay at and great cooks, who could ask for more?)

If we cannot help other poz people, who can we help?

how nice to hear that you had a good experience in the hospital down there.

except for just treating my partner worse than a leper back in 93 (because, you know he had teh AIDS), I've been very lucky to have things go well about my relationship with my guys while in the hospital - even at the Catholic hospital! Of course, I had to fling some POAs around a bit at first; but that's really good. You don't want hospitals to just accept anyone's word about your treatment.

so, how's your vision now, and the doctor's smile? Both good, I hope.

Hola Leatherman,
A good hospital visit is a great thing to share.
I never understood why gays didn't just lie about their relationship.
We could easily say our partner is our brother by a different father.

The eye is good, amazing how they can slice it open, take out the clear part and put in a lens without there ever being pain.
The left eye gets done in two weeks.
On our way home the doctor called my cell to check up on me and has since sent 4 emails! The medical people here really care about the patient.
Dr. Diego is not that pretty, but I think he does good work and cheap.

Because we should never have to hide the fact thats our partner and too even remotely give in to that is wrong. That's other peoples ignorance and their problem to deal with. Same goes with disclosing ones status. Never hide it. When we do we Only promote more ignorant people making choices for us.

On the original post I'm so glad you had the right experience. You said we were treated like normal people... Well because we are normal people. Demand to be treated that way.

My partner and I had a pretty good experience when I was in the hospital, as far as our relationship goes. The nurses brought him a bed, so he could sleep next to me, and didn't have to try and sleep in a chair. When I was in the ICU, they went to him and asked him who, besides him, should be privy to any info. He told them only he should be given info. And, they respected that.

A few years back we thought my husband had jaw cancer from a messed up root canal job done in the states.
The doctor here was going to work on the tooth and take a biopsy which was supposed to take less than an hour.
I went to the store and bought him a lovely cactus and returned within the hour. She came out and told me it was going to be a lot longer and sat me down next to him and I was told to hold his hand while she worked.
Imagine that one back home.

Back when we lived in Arkansas, we were the out couple.
Successful monogamous gay couple raising two children living in the good neighborhood.
It got us the status of token gays invited to all the parties and the occasional house egging.
I am all for showing the rest of the world who and what I am with pride, but if in a situation where I know there will be discriminating rules or laws used against me or the ones I love, being untruthful is not a problem for me.
Momma always said, "CYA!"

TednLou2 there is plenty of room down here and the medical procedures are cheap and good.

that's great. I have always wondered if one partner was being treated in the states, if the hospital administration had the right to refuse the partner visiting rights, etc?

As of a year ago, any hospital that receives federal funds (read: participates in Medicare and/or Medicaid, which is basically everyone) must allow patients to decide who visits them. Hospitals are also required to inform the patient of this right.

The average day where we live is 22 degrees Celsius/ 72 Fahrenheit, but it does rain often as we are in a rain forest. Toucans and parrots in the mornings and plenty of colorful little birds throughout the day. Too bad it is so dull.....
We should be back in London in May to enjoy your weather. I love visiting that old queen's place there.

Bless you Hoover my only experience of rain forest was Washington State staying in a small town called Forks. [I think ] It was not exactly me .Being asked to repeat a phrase in order to enjoy my funny accent begins to pall when one is not getting paid.

Though I am sure your rain forest is very differant to rusting houses cars and children's swings .And off course not every car sorry truck bedecked with the staring eye off a dead deer.

In May I should be in Orkney ,otherwise would had invited you and your husband to Tea.
Still if you make it to Orkney you would be welcome too.

Thanks for the invite to tea, I suspect we will hang in London or take the train to Berlin and see the sights along the way.
The hubby and I are both from Scottish heritage and would like to see the homeland one day.

Sorry for the unpleasant rain forest of Washington with children's swings and dead deers. At least here there are beautiful birds and insects and a view of our active volcano even if it rains daily for two months. We built this house big enough to hide from each other for those wet months when getting out is not fun. At almost 8,000 sq feet, we never feel shut in.
Friends coming over for the weekend and I have to clean all day.........

We are in the mountains east of San Jose near Turrialba Volcano.
This week we were warned that the volcano might blow!
How about that for a little excitement in one's life?

We are actually on the correct side of the volcano and should be safe unless it goes Mt. St. Hellens on us.
Visitors welcome, it is beautiful here but boring.

We used to have drills on what to do in case of a volcano blow.
My husband was to load the computers and inside animals in one car and I was supposed to get the two outside dogs, food and clothes in the other.
The chickens and donkeys were on their own with open gates.
(Hauling 5 donkeys was not practical)
Needless to say we have insurance for earthquakes and volcanoes.

Back to cleaning house and watering my new palms.
The husband drove to town for supplies. Imagine shopping in a world where you do not speak the language...... He seldom ever goes alone due to that.

we get a calendar every december showing us what zone we're in and where to flee to when the nuclear power plant, that's about 20 miles away, goes ka-boom. Sadly, I think we're in the zone that says "kiss your ass goodbye" LOL

One day I will have to tell you the tale of when my husband was the contact person for any nuclear power plant issues for Arkansas......
Sunday afternoon with lots of cocktails was not a good time to get the call of an incident!

I will take a volcano over a nuclear power plant any day.
