The cleanest, most luxurious restrooms
« on: November 19, 2007, 03:33:12 pm »
In a different thread, Vince (cayucosguy) mentioned our delightful day together and how I was always pointing out the best restrooms in San Francisco. Considering the digestive emergencies that so many of us are subject to, I thought this topic deserves a thread of its own!

Usually I like the restrooms in the nice hotels. In San Francisco, the St. Francis on Union Square has very nice restrooms, as do the Hotel Monaco on Geary Street, and the Palace Hotel on Market & New Montgomery Streets. The marble dividers between the stalls in the Palace restrooms used to reach to the floor, but it seems that they raised them. (Larry Craig would approve, I'm sure). The restrooms in the Levi Strauss Buillding at the foot of Telegraph Hill are also excellent. In the Castro, I like the stainless steel bathroom fixtures at The Midnight Sun. There are no doors on the stalls in the men's room at The Midnight Sun (to prevent sex and drug use?), but since there are never any women in that establishment, I use the Ladies' Room when I have a need to sit down.

When traveling, one of the first things I do is to find out the location of the best public restrooms. In Budapest, McDonald's always had clean restrooms. I never bought anything there, but McDonald's was a real lifesaver in a city where the restrooms in the main train station were beyond disgusting.

Here's a website that rates bathrooms around the world (including pictures):

Allan,

One shouldn't forget the opposite end of the spectrum... those green 'self cleaning' restrooms.  While I'm thankful for them, they sure do stink and the 5 or so minute 'cleaning cycle' between uses sure is annoying!  Below is a pic of one.

Those "self-cleaning" toilets are definitely a choice of last resort. A lot of the time they're out of order, or there is a line of people. It takes several minutes for each cleaning cycle, so if there are three people ahead of you, you're going to have to waste a lot of time waiting to use them.

Whenever I visit Coit Tower (top of Telegraph Hill), I tell the tourists lined up for those contraptions that there are free restrooms just inside the tower and there's no wait. It's just a little service that I try to provide for Bay Area visitors.

Having been given one of Allan's personal guided tours of the city while I was vacationing there, everything he says is correct, even down to the telling people in line at Coit Tower about the restrooms inside.  He truly is an outstanding tour guide and ambassador for San Francisco.

I'd agree 100% with you, Woods.  His tour at the AMG was one of the highlights, to me.  I would have missed so much of that city without his efforts.

In case anyone's wondering who's the rolling-eyes guy in David's picture, it's me! I'm rolling my eyes because it the damn thing locks up and "cleans" itself after each use, yet when I finally got in it smelled like some random port-o-potty.  Not the worst, by far, but not as fresh as you would expect from a Jetson's invention...

Unfortunately for some of us we find ourselves having to know these things...
and I can certainly relate....  I don't go anywhere without knowing where the
bathrooms are.....whether its a going problem or a growing problem....
A clean bathroom can be a life jacket for some of us.

Wish I had bought stocks in Wet Wipes too..........

allanq: I just want to say that we appreciate your attention to details and astute knowledge of men's restrooms in the bay area. Duly noted.....and yes, I think it's important that we guys know these tid-bits. I must confess I will likely abandon all well-intended advice because any old spot will do if it keeps me from crapping in my pants.  ::)

David_NC: Thank you for posting that sqirming-in-line picture of you-know-who. It's a gem. Made my day. :D
