HIV DUO - potential false positive? Norovirus & Cold
« on: December 29, 2012, 12:36:10 pm »
Hi all,
hope everyone is well.
Any help, comment or advice on this matter greatly appreciated.

I had a HIV DUO test (100 days after possible exposure) taken the other day. I had been ill with Norovirus with my symptoms clearing 48 hours previously. As well as a cold the week before.

Mentioned this to the doctor and she seemed fairly certain it would have no bearing on the test and whatever the result is what I should consider my final HIV status.

However, not for wanting to question what I have been told by a highly trained medical professional, I am anxious to know if there could be any validity in norovirus (or cold) antibodies being confused with HIV antibodies and producing a false positive reading?

It is my understanding that having a flu vaccine or the flu itself has been known to cause false positives with the HIV DUO, which is what has made wonder how far that stretches antibody wise. Particularly given that norovirus is a viral RNA the same as HIV.

Again thanks for any help.

You are worrying needlessly. Your negative result is conclusive and reliable.

Take a breath and get on with your life. Really.

Whilst I appreciate your comment, I didn't mention receiving a negative test at any point. My test results are tomorrows and fingers crossed for a negative result, naturally.

My anxiety and queries were answered by this very useful site that may be worth sharing around for future posters:

Thanks anyway for taking the time to reply and all the best.

Lets make it simple. If you obtain a positive result, it has to be confirmed.

Thank you.

That link was very useful and made it clear that confirmation on the same sample with different test methods was standard procedure as opposed to further tests I would have to personally undertake in the future to confirm.

Best.

Thanks for that clarification. No, your medications for other reasons would not affect the accuracy of your result.

Good luck.
