Hey all ...

I've heard that PCR testing provides accurate results earlier than the antibody tests, and I've heard ranges from 3 days to 10 days to 28 days ... anybody know how this works and when this test would be considered accurate?  and/or have any resource info you can direct me to?  thanks ....

PCR testing is not a diagnostic test. (should have read is not an FDA approved diagnostic test.)

PCR testing is not approved for diagnostic purposes because they have a very high rate of FALSE positive results and believe me, you don't want one of those. We do NOT recommend PCR testing for diagnostic purposes.

If you have had unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, you do need to test, but you should be testing with an antibody test, not PCR. The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, so a negative result at this time would be an excellent indication of your true status. However, the window period for hiv is three months, so a negative at six weeks MUST be confirmed at the three month point.

You might be worrying over nothing. Please tell us what event has you wanting to employ PCR testing to discover your hiv status.

Thanks, Ann.  Sure, I can say what happened ...

I was topping a guy and wearing a condom.  When I pulled out, I saw the condom had slipped off ... it was part in him and part out, so I imagine I couldn't have been in him without the condom on me, but then sometimes I panic about it (big panic, honestly) and think 'who knows what happned?' ...

If the condom was partially in and partially out. It was caused by incorrectly withdrawing. There would be NO risk in that situation. Make sure your partner holds firmly to the base of penis and condom when withdrawing and withdraw before the penis become soft.

While you do NOT need to test over this specific incident, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms correctly and consistently and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

It helped to just get the issue out there and get some feedback about no risk in this instance - as carzy as it sounds I've been obsessing about it, thinking there was some way i was in him without the condom. 
Just recently "back in the game" after a breakup, and think part of what I've learned is that I'm not up for one nighters right now.

I got a bj from a guy, and noticed afterwards that I had a cut on my penis (I had noticed a small pimple beforehand, it must have opened during teh action).  Can you tell me if you think this is an HIV risk?

Getting a blowjob, no matter what sort of spin you can think of to put on it, is NOT a risk for hiv infection.

Not only is saliva not infectious, but it also contains over a dozen different proteins and enzymes that damage hiv and render it unable to infect.

Thanks for your quick response and help (sorry about starting another thread).

Last question/clarification, if you have time:  The guy said something about a wisdom tooth proble.  If I had an open cut/sore on my penis and he had blood in the mouth does that present a HIV risk and need to test (I thought I've heard that's a problem?)

Jim, in the entire history of the epidemic there's never been a documented case of transmission to a guy getting a blowjob. And that includes with pimples, nicks, bruises and various. It just doesn't happen that way and I feel safe in saying you aren't going to make history by becoming the first.

Just as an aside, going through being back out in the world after a relationship ends can stir a lot of anxiety. Just be sure you use a condom everytime for intercourse, whether pitching or catching, and you'll be covered both literally and figuratively in terms of HIV.
