Toss Up?

...I recently, exactly one week ago, was the oral passive partner of a guy who is pos. he later, the next day, told me his vl was undetectable. he did not cum in my mouth, but i could taste pre-cum and i was quite drunk to boot.

...I realize everything i read says there is only a low risk of contracting hiv, but as of yesterday, a week later, i've got the sore throat, eye ache, and crazy nasal drip. no real fever as yet, so now i've got concern.

...My question: I see my pcp in a few days what are the advantages of me asking her for a vl test now, rather than waiting the 13 weeks for the anti-body test?

I realize it's all a toss-up, but at this point knowledge is power and the only thing to fear is fear itself...

Mem, fortunately your saliva contains over a dozen elements and proteins which form a very effective barrier against the transmission of viable HIV. So the risk of HIV in the situation you are concerned about is more theoretical than actual.

Testing? Basically only for your peace of mind because I would certainly expect a negative result. Do it at 3 months if you just want to reassure yourself but it's not really necessary.

Unsurprisingly nothing you are reporting symptomatically is HIV specific. If any symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor.

Basically risk for HIV sexually is about unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. Use condoms for those activities and you will be well protected.

Avoid mixing casual sex with excessive drinking. That's a bad formula for risky sex. Fortunately this time you're ok.
