I feel bad asking, but...
« on: August 07, 2007, 07:59:28 pm »
I know my risk is very low, but it seems I've developed the "I have HIV" OCD problem that is way too common lately. I promise this thread will not sprial down to 10+ responses from myself, but I just need to ask:

Here's the timeline..

7/14: Encounter w/ male of unknown status. Unprotected receptive oral. No ejaculation but definitely pre-cum. A little dry humping but no actual penetration.

7/16: Sore throat. Last for a few days. HIV paranoia kicks in.

7/26: Fever. Feel like crap. No rash. Tonsils swollen. Max fever 102.0

7/27: Doc appt. Says I'm worried for nothing. Draws blood for HIV/STD test and prescribes antibiotics.

7/28: Fever gone. Start to feel better.

7/29: Sore throat gone.
7/30: HIV results negative. This now eliminates all prior risky encounters. The only one left to be sure about is 7/14
All other STDs also negative.

8/1: I feel better... but still think about HIV every day.

8/6: Head cold. Congestion, clogged ears, runny nose. No fever.

I usually don't get sick back to back like this..... so of course my fears are running wild. I guess this could still potentially be ARS? Or my ARS is yet to come? I was pretty drunk when I was with this guy but I'm sure I would have remembered if I had completely penetrated him. There is a slim possibility there was pre-cum on his finger when he fingered me, but of course that's unlikely.

 :-\

I feel bad even bothering you guys with this, but I just need reassurance.

Nope, nothing to fret about here. Unprotected receptive oral sex is not a risk in terms of HIV transmission. Nor is "dry humping". Additionally symptoms or the lack of them mean nothing when it comes to diagnosing HIV.

Make sure you use condoms and water based lubricant whenever you have anal or vaginal sex and HIV won't be a problem for you.

B2,

I agree with Matty, but will add this:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Although you do not need to test over this specific incident, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Could green tea delay ARS or reduce ARS severity?

I am experiencing what feels like a "common cold" at the moment and we're at the 23-days post exposure point. Wouldn't this be prime ARS time?

I drink green tea from time to time. Do you think that could have an effect?

Green tea? No, drinking green tea will not impact on the outcome of your HIV test or ARS or anything like that.

Why are there two schools of thought on whether or not receptive oral is a transmission risk? Opinions vary, from no risk to "hey that's how I got it" - I don't understand why there can't be a consensus.

Those who got it thru oral, was there ejaculation? This entire fiasco wearing me down.....

B2,

There have been long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

This shows us two things. One, condoms are very effective for the prevention of hiv transmission. Two, oral sex is much lower risk than previously believed.

We now have the evidence that oral sex is a very low risk activity where hiv transmission is concerned.

B2,

By the way, make sure you read the Welcome Thread and take note of the posting guidelines. I had to delete an incorrect response of yours in someone else's thread yesterday.

Please don't do that again. Thanks.

And with that in mind, what is the explanation for those people who swear they were infected via receptive oral sex?

Do what again? It would be more helpful if you could tell me what I did wrong. Feel free to PM if necessary. Thanks.

B2,

Sometimes people do things under the influence of drink or drugs that they don't remember. Sometimes people can't admit to having unprotected intercourse. Human nature is like that.

Those studies were conducted with good sized cohorts (I don't have the numbers to hand ... and it's bedtime) and one of them - the largest - lasted for ten years. That's a lot of nookie. The people in the study had no reason to lie. Some of the seronegative partners did end up hiv positive - but they all engaged in unprotected intercourse with their positive partners at least some of the time.

The key to hiv prevention is using condoms correctly and consistently. This is how you avoid hiv infection. Read the condom and lube links in my signature line.

Ann

PS - I gave you that warning because you tried to give advice about PEP yesterday. You are in no position to give advice here, sorry. I'm sure you meant well, but please don't do it again. Thanks.

And by the way, if you'd read the posting guidelines like I just asked you to, you'd know what you did wrong.

Thanks Ann, that makes sense.

Sorry about the PEP post. It just concerned me that no one took the time to mention his 72-hour window...

That's the whole point - he wasn't in a 72 hour window. He didn't need PEP.

B2,

You've already been told to not post in other people's threads, yet I just had to delete another one of your comments. If I find you posting in a thread in this forum other than your own again, you will be given a time out.

Make sure you read our Welcome Thread and abide by the posting guidelines found there. Thank you for your cooperation - you won't be warned again.
