exercise and flu like symptoms
« on: December 31, 2013, 09:55:26 am »
I get symptoms just like the flu but, without the sinus congestion everytime I exercise. I use a stationary bike for about 15 minutes a day for three to four days in a row and have to stop. I start getting sick with flu like systems; fever, body pain, weakness, dizziness, and sometimes vomiting. These symptoms last for one to three days before fading away over a couple of days. My vitamin D was very low so I began taking D3 at 2000 IU once each day which brought my vitamin D back to low normal. I am going to start riding my stationary bike again with hopes of not getting sick. Anyone else have this issue?

I have been on three different drug treatments with viral load undetectable and cd4 over 1000.

Maybe you should discuss this with a doctor. Sounds very abnormal

I have discussed this with several doctors with only one suggesting vitamin D being the culprit, maybe. No doctor has ever heard of this issue. This problem has been with me since being infected with hiv in late 03.

Are you taking any other type of supplements or GNC type powders or proteins?

Then that is odd. Ive used some of those powders before and it didn't sit too well but nothing med related. Strange question #2.... Does this happen anywhere else, like it may be something environmental like an allergy to something? I was thinking if it's a gym environment, they are a breeding ground for all sorts of critters and everything is hosed down with chemicals. Just a thought that it may be something in the facility.

If it is a gym, have you experienced this at a different gym or has it only been here because this is the only place you work out?

After this problem became established I found the location of an exercise program didn't matter. I also thought about the germ infested gyms and avoided them. Unfortunately the problem remains. The last episode came after riding on a bike path over several days. I covered about 10 miles each day for three days before the illness came up.

Maybe a visit to an endocrinologist or urologist might be of benefit.

Funny you should mention a urologist.

In all seriousness, does your urine color or urinary habits change during these episodes?

No change in urine color or habits. I know I'm dealing with low T and BPH but these issues are recent. The exercise induced flu like symptoms have been with me for most of my poz life.

Hi Bill, indeed the symptoms seem to be strange. I am on Complera as well and do my exercises on a regular basis (12km running every other day plus gym twice a week). I do take a break when I feel weak or have flu-like symptoms. So far it had either to do with a real flu or just over-exercising. I actually had my best running results the day I was tested positive.

As each of us reacts differently to the virus and the meds it will be difficult to identify the cause over the internet. My 2 cents are just that Complera - at least in my case - does so far not limit my exercises...

I hope you find out where this comes from as a good healthy life style helps your immune system.

I don't believe the drugs are causing this problem. I am hoping the very low vitamin D was the culprit. I will know in a few days.

Hey bill, Good to hear you figured out the reason why you were facing those issues. I was also facing some of the issues earlier like body ache and fever and I strictly took rest and got well back.
You shouldn't have rode that stationary or spinning bike in that health circumstances. But I must applaud your courage and effort that during your health issue you were exercising. It is said that exercising makes one fit and healthy if someone is ill. It helps to overcome illness but in your case it didn't help :( Take care, Hope you recover well and continue with your exercise.

Welcome to the forums, Tay. Are you hiv positive? If you are, why don't you tell us a little about yourself? (In addition to your love of exercise) If you're not hiv positive, you shouldn't be posting here, hence my question.

So, I've been taking vitamin D supplements for a few months and have finally been able to raise the level in my body to the low end of normal. I have also started exercising five days a week with no ill effects. I can't say for sure the low vitamin D was the reason for the flu like symptoms but, with a normal level I don't get sick anymore. Hope this info helps someone else too.
