Atripla - is tripping me up
« on: September 02, 2012, 04:09:47 am »
Been on Atripla for 4 weeks now. I have been positive for a year. I take it at 10pm near bedtime and ensure I have not eaten for 2 hours before. The side effects are pretty strong still. I feel very 'stoned' by midnight and it keeps me awake. Since week 1 it has really affected my co ordination and my legs feel like jelly in the day. Walking normally requires a lot of effort and running is no longer possible. Its as if my brain signals are not reaching my limbs. Its also really making me feel depressed. The upside is that it has reduced my viral load from 120,000 to 900. Spoke with my Dr last week and will see him again this week. I dont like how this drug is controlling simple functions :-(
Anyone else experience anything similar?

I switched to norvir, truvada and prezista because atripla wasn't agreeing with me. Feel fantastic now. If it doesn't agree with you get it changed to something else. There are lots of other options out there.

I take Truvada - Stocrin/Sustiva, its 2 pills instead of 1 and its the same meds as Atripla.

First month was rough but from there it got better and better almost by the day. I know what you mean by feeling stoned, I just up until recently after 3 months on these meds starting to shake that stone feeling, I had what can be described as being in a constant haze more or less 24/7 and it was frustrating to say the least.

Im also switching to take my meds in the morning instead of at night to hopefully get better (deeper more relaxed) sleep. The meds in Atripla are quite well studied so by being on a popular regimen there is a lot of knowledge about side effects and how to handle those.

If you dont have severe problems I would stick it out at least one more month, It got better for me and chances are it will for you too.

good luck, cheers :)

I see no need to "stick it out" longer than four weeks when there are so many other options available. What's the point? All recommended regimens suppress viral load.

If the OP was complaining after one week I would stay stick it out for four, but this isn't the case here.

Well, I did it and it worked out good for me. Whatever regimen there might be side effects and it could very well take longer than 4 weeks to get used to them. I guess the call is for the OP to make what he/she wants to do.

I had bad luck with Atripla myself and actually went off of it 10 days into treatment.  I got the normal rash and that was fine but it was all the other things.  I went into strange moods,  forgetfulness, and most of all paranoia after starting it.  Everything was making me cry and scared.   It was the worst feeling I ever had.

I have been on Atripla for around six months now, I have had the the insomnia, confusion and depression that has come with it.  The physical side effects have subsided, and my over all numbers are tremendously better, but I still battle with depression and thoughts of doom and gloom.

I was also seeing an intensification of side effects from Atripla.  After nearly six years I was having trouble with tasks that required more concentration and focus.
I was also having sleeping issues....often waking at times in the middle of the night.
In spite of being concerned about dependency, I was increasing my Ambien consumption in order to get enough rest.

I recently switched to Complera (5 days ago).  I already am sleeping better and feeling more focused.  I think it was the Sustiva.  My numbers have been good on Atripla......so decided a smaller regimen change would be best.  I had thought about Isentress/Truvada.  For those of you that may have similar problems.....Complera eliminates the Sustiva compenant.  Will post with labs/trends in several weeks.  Thanks to all for all the posts

Im on Sustiva/Truvada (the same components as Atripla but in separate pills) Im doing ok but still when reading your posts I dont know if there is something going on :o. Maybe I could feel better, sleep better and better concentrate. As of now I mainly have a problem with energy levels and fatigue, not physically but mentally (HIV or the meds? , dont know...)

Kind of hard to compare with any other meds when I only been on one regimen and have no idea how I might do on the others. I feel lucky thou to not have any gastro problems or diarrhea.

I take the same molecules as yours in two generic pills for now 1 and 1/2 month...

I had no rash, no problem for sleeping except on the morning, during the first month it has been very difficult for me to wake up, but now I feel better...  I feel thirsty almost all the time.

On the morning, till 10 AM, I feel a little dizzy, little confusion, but it is going with time...  Anyway, it has never affected me to work.  I have some diarrhea matters but not sure if it is because of those meds.

Some days I still feel very tired, but other with a lot of energy, including more than before my diagnostic.  I think that with this kind of treatment it is super important to have a proper rest and sleep well.  I noticed that if I sleep late, the day after I´m completely exhausted...  Also, when I exercice a lot, I feel really exhausted too; I think the key is resting well in all the cases...  With alcohol, half a glass of beer makes me as 3 before starting treatment...

Also my neck nodes have desappeared for almost 3 weeks...

I´m very happy with these meds and hope now my VL has decreased...

@hoxman - Your experience is usual, it usually passes. If it doesn't take something else. You will know if Atripla, specifically the efavirenz it contains, ain't for you. Meds is supposed to make you feel better, not ruin your life from side effects.

Your doc should tell u that Atripla also has Sustiva - and will give u same nightmares.. Because of Sustiva I took separately and then with Atripla I switched to Complera. The only side effect I have is gas passing, but getting better with right amount of right food. Fabulous! Taking during lunch time, do my daily exercise and taking my vitamins.. In 2 weeks will get my labs and will check if I lost T-cells.
