Why do some cops do things like this?
« on: February 14, 2007, 02:36:53 am »
Was driving home from work at 2 a.m. in a really bad snowstorm; really limited visibility and treacherous roads. A cop followed me for a couple miles, so I figured he was making sure I got home safe.

Wrong. The guy pulls me over. Snowing like hell, and he pulls me over. I am tired as hell and stressed out from the drive. Get my license out. No problem, I figure. I have been driving for more than 35 years and have a spotless record.

Turns out he gives me a ticket....he had the dispatcher check my plate number while he was following me and found out my registration was expired by TWO DAYS. I didn't even know it...the sticker says 02/07, so I thought I had till the end of the month.  You would think he'd have better things to do in a snowstorm at 2 a.m.

The kicker: After I looked at the ticket when I got home, I recognized the cop's name. I worked with his father for 15 years.

Makes you wonder: Why couldn't he have given me a warning? Frustrating  >:(

That's what I thought, too. I'm in New York.

Sorry to be a curmudgeon when so many other people have so many more difficult problems, but this really pissed me right off.

In answer to your question.........to meet a quota, perhaps. Before you contest this and march into court, I'd check state regulations. Something tells me it expires on the day of issuance of the following year. The up side: This will NEVER happen to you again.
I understand your frustration. However, I had an opposite experience once. I was stopped for speeding and the trooper didn't ticket me cause he knew my father. My father was a simple farmer; not a judge or lawyer or prominent in any social fashion. That ticket would have been $$$$!

I know here in Pa, you have til the end of the month. My sticker expired on 12/6. I reregistered online on 1/4/07 and printed out the paper which was good for 2 weeks. SO, I since I paid and had proof, I still drove. I got pulled over on my bday of all days and I was behind an unmarked car but I knew it was cops anyway by the plate. They pulled over and let me pass then pulled me over. I thought it was because of the sticker so of course I had the paperwork in the car. Come to find out I didn't have my headlights on and before I could give him my paperwork, he assured me they ran a check from off my plate.

I'm glad you are fighting it cause you can definitely beat it. I wonder what the cop was thinking? Another example of wasting the courts time and our money...

Jeeeeeze Mike! You go missing for ages and then post a thread with this cop title. I thought you just got out of jail or something! ;D

I'd fight that ticket too and also say something about the conditions under which it was given. As you say, you'd think the guy would have had something more important to be doing in that kind of weather. Sheesh!

Good to hear from you again. Don't be such a stranger!

Wow.  Here you have until the end of the month.  And yeah, I thought he'd have better things to do in bad weather.  Though right now my county is under snow emergency, so the cops are arresting anyone on the road who isn't driving for emergency purposes.  Well, I doubt arresting since our jail is filled to capacity, I think more likely ticketing, but that is what they say they are doing.

Most cops are good guys I have found.  However you have a few (and in some cases entire departments) of them who were TOOLS in high school and are taking it out on people now OR have a power complex.  Blue Springs Missouri is like this.  But I think they have an inferiority complex!!!

Mike,

The simple answer is every profession has its share of assholes and you ran into one.

Now I'm scared because my brake tag expired in May, 2005 but I've been too lazy to replace a dead turn signal bulb so the truck will pass inspection.   When I finally go to get the tag I'm thinking of telling the inspector I've been in a coma since Katrina.  Many of us in N.O. still feel like we're in a coma.

I have to agree - you ran into a bad apple.  My brother is a police officer, and he is generally very reasonable and nice to the people he encounters.  Most cops hate traffic stops, because they are a pain, and especially in bad weather, the guy you ran into must have had a huge hard on to give someone a ticket.

I can't see my brother, or any of the people he works with, getting out of the car on a snowy night to give someone (who was not drunk or someone who was not in an accident) a ticket for an expired registration.  It is a nasty, dangerous, and arrogant thing to do.

There's lots of good traffic lawyers out there - expensive, but maybe worth trying to beat it for the pure satisfaction of doing so.

Mike I saw you tonight on "Cops Wildest Videos." Tearing up that ticket and throwing it out the window. What vulgarity for just a ticket.  ;)
